William Berry

The earliest known ancestor of this line is William Berry, born 25 November 1753 in Warwick (Kent County), Rhode Island according to his 1832 Revolutionary War Pension Declaration. William Berry outlines his service beginning with a 1775 enlistment from the town of New Britian in the county of Albany, New York [present day Columbia County]. His pension declaration also outlines his post-Revolutionary residences in Hancock, Berkshire County, Massachusetts and then both Rensselaer and Allegany counties in New York. He is first documented in the 1790 & 1800 Berkshire County, Massachusetts census. By 1810 he had moved to Rensselaer County, New York and is shown there on both the 1810 & 1820 census. By 1830, he had moved to Allegany County, New York, where his October 1839 Will was probated in January 1840, in Almond. According to this will, William's wife was 'Polly' and named children were: Rachel (m. Ashel Palmer, Jr); Lydia; William (d. by 1820 with heirs, wife’s name Martha Hungerford); Thomas; John (wife’s name Mehitable Hungerford); Anna (m. Unknown Potter); and Elizabeth.

Although no records have yet been discovered connecting this line to the Augusta County, Virginia BERRY line, DNA results show the lines are closely related.
