The earliest known ancestor of this line was Richard Berry, born about 1715, who died about 1775 in Orange Co., North Carolina. His wife was Fanny [unknown]. Their known children were: John Berry, Prettyman Berry (b. c1754), Francis Berry, Lucy Berry (married William Cain), Mary Berry (probably married Simon Poe) and Elizabeth Berry. Prettyman Berry is known to have resided in Orange Co., North Carolina until his father's death, when he moved to the Cheraw District of South Carolina. Other later descendants of Richard Berry resided in Talking Rock in Union County, Georgia and on Hog Mountain in Gwinnett County, Georgia. In addition, some descendants are known to have been removed from Georgia during the Trail of Tears in the late 1830s. The remainder of the family later moved to the Oklahoma and Arkansas border area, where most of them remain today.
