The earliest known ancestor of this line was Richard Berry, born about 1805 in South Carolina according to the 1850 Cherokee Co. and 1860 Marshall Co., Alabama, census records. Richard's wife, Martha, (surname unknown) was also born about 1805 in South Carolina. Richard and Martha's known children were: John W. Berry, born about 1849 in Alabama (married Frances Jane Rocks/Books), and daughters named Caroline, Lucy, Tabitha and Martha (all also born in Alabama). Descendants of this line remain largely in Alabama.
