John Berry, the earliest known ancestor of this line, was born in 1766 in that part of Augusta County, Virginia, that later became Rockingham County, Virginia. John Berry married Margaret Claypoole on June 15, 1802, in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Census records indicate that they lived in Harrison and Muhlenberg Counties, Kentucky, and had migrated to Macoupin County, Illinois, by 1840. Margaret (Claypoole) Berry died there on July 5, 1843, and John Berry died there on August 20, 1845. Children from an unknown previous marriage of John Berry were Reuben and Rebecca Berry. John Berry & Margaret (Claypoole) Berry's children were: Newton, Jesse, Rachel, David, Eleanor, Elizabeth (m. Isaac B. Johns[t]on), Polina and Catherine Jane.
