James Berry, formerly the earliest known ancestor in this line, was born about 1820 in Virginia. He was married to Ellen (or Ellenor) Unknown and died between 1870 and 1880. By 1860, this James Berry can be documented in Fayette County, Virginia (now West Virginia), although he was most likely in that county as early as 1830. (Fayette County, Virginia was formed from Greenbrier County, Virginia in 1831.) James Berry's known children were Basheba, Isaac, Nancy, Louisa, James M., William H., Sarah A. and Wiley. Descendants of this family can be found in West Virginia.
