James Berry

The earliest known ancestor of this line is James Berry, born circa 1690. James Berry purchased land in Augusta County, Virginia, on 27 November 1750. On 21 May 1754, George Berry, petitioned the court for tax relief on behalf of his father, James Berry. On 21 May 1756, James Berry, and his wife Elizabeth (Unknown), sold their property to this same son, George Berry (ca 1720-1803), which provides primary source identification of at least one son. James Berry died intestate, probably shortly after that date since there are no further records. It is presumed that Thomas Berry, Sr., (1718-1799) was also a son. The DNA results to date have shown that James Berry had a close family relationship with the John Berry who died in Augusta County in 1772. Whether they were brothers, cousins, uncle/nephew or even father/son cannot be determined at this time. Descendants of this line can be found in Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas, Oregon, Arkansas, Louisiana, Indiana, Iowa and Illinois.
