The earliest known ancestor of this line, Henry Berry, is estimated to have been born about 1670. Henry was deceased before 20 March 1739 in Monmouth County, New Jersey, when his son, Henry Berry, renounced his right to administer the estate of his father in favor of his brother, John Berry. They were Henry's two known sons: Henry Berry [Junior], born circa 1695 in New Jersey, died Monmouth County, New Jersey circa 1740 and who married Pernya Ward; and John Berry, born circa 1703, who died 22 December 1758 in Somerset County, New Jersey. Descendants of these two sons remained in New Jersey, although in the late 1780s some grandchildren of son John Berry migrated to that part of Augusta County, Virginia which later became Rockingham County, Virginia.
