Carvell Lorenzo Stonehouse
November 6, 1917 - August 11, 1984
BIBLE HILL - Well known blueberry producer Carvell Lorenzo STONEHOUSE, 66, of 142 Pictou Rd., died Saturday in Victoria General
Hospital. Mr. Stonehouse was instrumental in developing the
blueberry industry in Nova Scotia, as well as being one of the
largest blueberry producers in Colchester County. Over the years, Mr.
Stonehouse was also involved in the lumber and Christmas tree
industries; was a fur dealer and a former general merchant in
Millvale, Cumberland County. Born in Millvale, Mr. Stonehouse was a
son of the late Pleamon and Mabel (Smith) Stonehouse. He is survived
by his wife, the former Rhoda Langille; a daughter, Fern (Mrs. Paul
Walker), Ottawa; a son, Peter, Debert, and six grandchildren. The
funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Mattatall Funeral
Home, Truro with Rev. Dennis Leamont officiating. Burial followed in
Millvale Cemetery. Beginning in the 1970's, he gradually phased out
most of his other business operations to devote most of his time to
the blueberry industry. He operated the Millvale store until 1951,
when he moved to the Truro and Bible Hill area. His early schooling
was in Millvale until he went to Oxford for his Grade 11 following by
attendance at the
Provincial Normal College at Truro in 1936-37, graduating with a
teacher's licence.
