The Pictou Advocate, October 2001 Local woman receives special recognition PICTOU: On Friday, September 7 at the Pictou North Colchester Exhibition, Isabell Langille was honored by the Light Horse and Draft Horse exhibitors. Isabell was driven into the arena by a team of Clydesdales, hitched to a beautiful horse drawn carriage owned by Ronnie and Kelly MacKenzie. She was accompanied in the carriage by her three daughters, Vera Manning, Elva Douglas and Irene MacMillan. The horse exhibitors were honoring Isabell for attending the exhibition consecutively for 78 years. Isabell first started going to the Pictou Ex in 1923 at the age of 16. She along with some girlfriends, would take the train to Pictou. The Exhibition was held around the third week of September at that time. The train would make an extra run at 11:00 every night on the Short Line, to take everyone home from the fair. The Fair would draw a large crowd of people every day. Isabell was born on a farm in Denmark on October 19, 1907. Her parents were James and Victoria (Campbell) Redmond. Isabell had two brothers. One passed away as a result of an accident at 12 years old and Lloyd lived on the family homestead until he passed away two years ago at the age of 86. When Isabell Redmond (Langille) was 18, she boarded the Scotian Harvest excursion train to Western Canada to drive a team of horses for the annual grain harvest. She stayed with her Aunt and Uncle in Saskatchewan. Her love for horses started at a very young age. She would ride double with her father at three years old. Isabell married Findley Langille on April 3, 1928. They celebrated their 66 anniversary before his death on April 11, 1994. Findley enjoyed the animals and they continued to have horses over the years. Their love of horses was passed down to their three daughters, Vera, Elva and Irene. The three sisters started showing horses at the Ex in Pictou when they were teenagers. Over the years, Isabell's grandchildren and great grandchildren have been showing their horses. Her granddaughter Stacey continues to compete and Isabell enjoys being there for every class. She keeps her horses at Nan's barn which brings a lot of enjoyment to her day. Isabell also loves to garden and exhibits her flowers at the Ex every year, taking home many ribbons. Reading is another passion she enjoys. The book mobile comes every three weeks, and by this time Nan has usually read 30 books. Nannie Isabell as she is affectionately known, has eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter, Grace Isabel who is named after her. Nan has often said that age is only in your mind..."If you think you are old - you are!"
