Maj. Ian Kenneth Frederick McKenzie

McKENZIE, Maj. Ian Kenneth Frederick - 75, Truro, died June 15, 1997,
in Camp Hill Veteran's Memorial Building, Halifax.
Born in Calgary, Alta.
he was a son of the late Ian and Gladys (Harris) McKenzie.
He served in the RCAF during the Second World War from 1940-1945 in England, India, Ceylon and Burma,
leaving with the rank of flight lieutenant, active reserve.
From 1945-1948, he worked for the City of Calgary, Children's Aid Department,
and also ran the Rotary Boy's Club.
From 1948-1951, he was the executive director of the Rosemount Boy's Club, Montreal, Que.
He rejoined the Canadian Air Force in 1951 and served on many Canadian bases.
His final military posting was at $101 KU, Shearwater,
from where he retired in 1969 with the rank of major (squadron leader).
From 1970 until his retirement in 1982, he worked with the Nova Scotia Department of Education,
Adult Vocational Education, at Indian Brook (Shubenacadie), Stellarton and Truro.
In addition to receiving five medals during war time and the Canada Defence Medal and bar,
he received the George Medal in 1962
"...for leadership and courage of a very high order and at grave risk..."
to himself, and fellow officer F.E. MacLaren,
when they rescued men from a plane which had crashed and was burning.
Surviving are his wife, the former E. Jean Langille;
son, Scott, Rocky Harbour, Nfld.,
daughters, Diane MacLean, Truro, Karen Moerman, Londonderry;
seven grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother and a sister.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. today, legion service 7 p.m. today, memorial service 4 p.m. Tuesday,
all in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro,
Rev. Whitney Dalrymple officiating.
Burial in Robie Street Cemetery.
