Charles Arthur Annand
January 9, 1927 - August 30, 2002
ANNAND, Charles Arthur, P. Eng - 75, well-known Truro businessman and inventor,
passed away suddenly Friday, August 30, 2002, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro,
as the result of an accident at home.
Born in Truro,
he was a son of the late Clifford and Marjorie (McCully) Annand.
He attended school in Truro and graduated from Mount Allison University and
the Nova Scotia Technical College (TUNS), with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He owned and operated two well-known Truro businesses,
Annand Steel and C.F. Cox Roofing Ltd.
In 1967, his business travels took him to Paris, France,
where he studied the art of slate roofing.
From this experience his company carried out the slate roofing
of the historic Fortress Louisbourg.
Among other originally designed and manufactured projects were
the hydraulic log loader and the Oil Cat
(slicker).
His passion was his work in innovation and patents.
He was a member of the Canadian and U.S. Patent Association having in excess of 50 registered international patents.
He was a long-time member of Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia (APENS)
and the Innovation Society of Nova Scotia.
He was a former member of the Truro Golf Club and
an active member of the Truro Curling Club.
He was involved in Truro Minor Hockey, serving several years on the executive committee.
Charlie was an avid football fan and supported all levels of football from the local to intercollegiate level.
He was one of the "original seven", who were instrumental in the initial development
of Ski Wentworth, beginning with the first rope tow.
His company, Annand Steel, manufactured and installed the first Timberline T-Bar.
He continued to be an avid skier, skiing at Wentworth up until recent years.
As an active member of St. Andrew's Church,
he served on several committees and boards, and volunteered his time at the Colchester Food Bank.
Charlie loved spending time at the cottage, swimming, gardening, and enjoying the beautiful sunsets.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Martha (Langille);
son, Charles Scott and wife Patty, Truro;
daughter, Lara, Calgary;
granddaughters, Megan and Emily Annand.
Also surviving are brother, Robert and wife Penny, Halifax;
sisters, Patricia Pyne, Fairbanks, Alaska;
Marjorie Protheroe, Kitchener, Ont.;
Florence and husband, Ron Endall, Oromocto, N.B.;
several nieces and nephews.
No visitation by his request.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. today
in St. Andrew's United Church, Truro, Rev. Margaret Sagar officiating.
