Boston -- Daniel L. Ferguson, 83, of Middleboro, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999,
at the New England medical center after a long illness.
He was the husband of Beulah F. (Griffin) Ferguson.
Born in Boston,
the son of the late Donald J. and Edna P. (Langille) Ferguson,
he served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War.
With a total of 32 years in the service, he retired as captain.
A resident of Middleboro for over 30 years,
he attended the First Congregational Church at the Green, Middleboro.
He was very generous to the Middleboro schools and
on the occasion of the rededication of the Statue of Liberty in New York City,
he sponsored an essay contest.
The winners, some 25 students and their chaperones
received a four day trip to New York City, paid for by Mr. Ferguson.
He was active with the Middleboro Council on Aging,
volunteering many hours before his illness required him to be admitted to Oak Hill Nursing Home.
Mr. Ferguson was a member of American Legion Post 22, Whitman;
Disabled American Veterans, Middleboro;
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2188, Middleboro;
May Flower Lodge A.F. & A.M.; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Boston;
Aleppo Shriners; and Middleboro Lions Club.
Survivors include his widow;
two sons, Richard D. Ferguson of Brockton and Bruce D. Ferguson of South Weymouth;
a stepson, Albert N. Sears of Middleboro; a stepdaughter, Ann N. Sears of Brockton;
a brother, Theodore Ferguson of Pembroke;
a sister, Hellen Laukkanen of Taunton;
five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was the father of the late Brian D. Ferguson and brother of the late Jack Ferguson.
His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ashley Funeral Home, 35 Oak St., Middleboro.
