      1.  John1 LANGFORD was born June 07, 1685 in Prob. Hurley, Berkshire, England, and died August 07, 1762 in Lunenburg County, Virginia.  He married Rebecca [--?--] Aft. 1705 in Virginia.  She was born Aft. 1689, and died Aft. 1734.

Notes for John LANGFORD:

IMPORTANT NOTE:  I am still conducting research on John and his wife Rebecca to further validate this connection.  Again, this provides us with a point in which to measure our "possible" ancestral connections.  It is still entirely possible that the sources I have gathered thus far for John are in fact, different people.  However, based upon the research materials on hand and that which I have reviewed, this is what I believe to be true.  My older second cousin, Linda Langford-Odom had mentioned this likely connection as well during her research.  I do not have her source materials however and have no way to determine how she also arrived at the possible conclusion.  Like all Genealogies however, this is and always will be a work in progress.

It is my current assumption that John Langford was born on June 7, 1685 in Hurley, Berkshire, England.  (Source: Parish registers, 1560-1969, and church and civil records, 1844-1963 Church of England. Parish Church of Hurley.)

It is also my belief that John migrated to the New World sometime in 1705 through the State of Virginia as on May 2, 1705 in New Kent County, Virginia, A John Lankford is involved in a 3 person land acquisition of William Major's property.  William Major is obtaining this land and John Lankford is used as a headright in this transaction.  It is located on the south side of the York River, near Nantecock Creek. This should provide a nice general geographical reference point to analyze at a later date.  Source:  Cavaliers and Pioneers, Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, Volume 3, Patent Book No. 9, Page 95.

On November 2, 1705, a John Langford acquired a piece of land in King and Queen County, Virginia.  The land was 228 acres in size.  I do not believe that this John is the same person as our John Langford.  Based upon the current DNA results of the Langford/Lankford Surname project, the grouping of Langford's in this area appears to be claimed underneath another researcher's group (Gene Lankford in this case, who is one of the current DNA Project Coordinators).  As our DNA does not match this group even close, I would infer that this is a different John Langford. Additionally, the Stephen and Joseph Langford's in this area again lead me to believe that these are the Langford/Lankford ancestor's of Gene Lankford's group which bear the J2 Haplogroup marking in their DNA.  The last inference I would make is that is not very likely that

On September 20, 1722 in St. Peter's Parish (New Kent County, Virginia), a birth is recorded as follows: "Henry Son of John Langford born Septr.20th, 1722."

In 1746,  Lunenburg County, Virginia is formed from Brunswick County, Virginia

Two years later, In 1748, when John is approximately 65 years old, he is recorded in a list paying taxes for 1 Tithe in Lunenburg County, Virginia.  It is interesting to note that Richard and Henry Rottenberry are listed next to John Langford in this tax listing.  This is another consistent source as there are several land grants of John Langford that indicate the Rottenberry's as neighbors.

In 1749,  Lunenburg County, Virginia, A John Lankford pays taxes for1 tithe.  William Howard's district "from Butchers Creek to the extent of the County downwards."

In 1752, on a list taken by Field Jefferson in Lunenburg County, Virginia, John "Lanfurd" is charged a total of 2 tithes.  Henry "Landfurd" is indented underneath John's name.  I would infer a father and son relationship with this entry.  John's son, Henry, does not marry Priscilla Herndon until 1755, 3 years after this tax list was taken and would have been charged a tithe because of his age.

On August 10, 1756, while John is approximately 71 years old, he purchased 200 acres of land in the Lunenburg County, Virginia area.  Transcription of the Land Grant:

On September 17, 1759,  John is approximately 74 years old and is listed as a neighbor in a will.  There is another important piece of documentation found during this footstep.  John's son, George, is mentioned also.  Cumberland Parish is the Church's religious area better known as Lunenburg, Virginia.  Transcription of the will:  Before the Division of Cumberland Parish, Nov 1, 1760: The land of Francis Rainey Do. John & George Langford; the land of George Langford Do. Fras. Rainey & Jon. Boseman. RT 1985, p 42. (Langford is mentioned as a neighbor on the grant of land to Francis Raney in 1769.)

      7.  George2 Langford, Sr. (John1) was born Bet. 1730 - 1736 in Brunswick County (now Lunenburg County), Virginia, and died May 1782 in Warren County, North Carolina.  He married Judith [--?--] Abt. 1754 in Prob. Granville (Now Warren) County, North Carolina.  She was born Bet. 1727 - 1738 in Prob. Virginia, and died Aft. 1793 in Prob. Warren County, North Carolina.

Notes for George Langford, Sr.:

It is my belief that George Langford was born between 1730 and 1736 in Brunswick County, (later known as Lunenburg County) Virginia.  He married a woman by the name of Judith about 1754 in North Carolina. I have yet to establish either the maiden name of Judith or to find a marriage bond to determine their exact date of marriage.   It is unknown by me if such a record even exists as the marriage date is from an early period.  If there was a record, it would in my opinion most likely be found in a Parish Register.

It is important to note how the County lines in George's era shifted as he and his descendant's are recorded in all 3 of these counties.  In 1746,  Granville County, North Carolina is formed from Edgecombe County, North Carolina.  In 1764, Bute County, North Carolina is formed from Granville County, North Carolina.  In 1779, Warren County, North Carolina is formed from Bute County, North Carolina.  Bute County is also abolished after this transference.

In September 17, 1759 John and George Langford/Lankford are mentioned next to one another in the Returns of Processioning in Obedience to an order of Vestry, Before the Division of Cumberland Parish.  This is my first indication that George's father could be a John Langford and that George came from the Brunswick/Lunenburg County, Virginia area.

On May 1774, George Langford acquired a piece of land in Bute County, North Carolina as recorded in the Bute County, North Carolina Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions.  The acquisition is transcribed as follows:  "A Deed from James Williams to George Langford was proved by the oath of William Rose a Witness thereto and on Motion the Same is Ordered to be Registered."

This entry contains some very important information when analyzed closely and further supports the connection between father (George Langford, Sr.) and his children, specifically, John Langford.  Two of George's grand daughters (from his son John Langford) married men from the Rose family.  Secondly, we begin to see a migration pattern forming for George Langford from Lunenburg County, Virginia.  Bute County, North Carolina is abolished in 1779 and Warren County, North Carolina forms from this area.  This county line shift occurs 5 years after this land purchase.  Also, keep in my mind that Lunenburg County, Virginia is almost exactly due north of Bute County, North Carolina.

In that same month of May 1774, another court entry is recorded that holds some significance.  It is recorded as follows:

"George Tucker is appointed overseer of the road in the room of Robert King & That he keep the same in repair with the hands of Geo: Tucker, Dan'l Burford, Sam'l Jones, Allan Burton, John White, George Langford, George Rose, John Fowler, Alexander Fowler & Robert Davis &c.286"

This entry shows two additional clues about George's connection into the timeline besides his name being mentioned in a time and place.    We have our Rose connection again and keep in mind that one of George's sons, Joab, marries Betsey White as the White surname is mentioned.  The reference to maintaining a road implies that all of these people live somewhat close together.

On January 27, 1779, a George Langford is mentioned as a neighbor in  Bute County, North Carolina land transaction.  It is transcribed as follows:

"Thomas Richardson and Ann, his wife, of Bute County to Edward Marks, of Brunswick County, State of Virginia for 1,260 Pds. Va. money for 360 acres in Bute Co. on BS Smiths Creek from the Country (sic) Line  to the Camp Branch adj. Chas. Davis, George Lankford and old line ("as was") of Israel Roberson."  This recorded footstep is credited to Poldi Tonin, another Langford researcher. Keep in mind that in just a few months from this recorded footstep, the County of Bute will be abolished and Warren County, North Carolina will take it's place.  I think it is important to point out that it is just as likely that this recorded George Langford is actually George Jr.

In May 1782, George Langford writes his will.  Based upon the wording, George is suffering from some type of disease and knows he is going to die soon.  There are several publications that transcribe this will and are mentioned further down in the sources section for George.

Bill Kaye Langford provided a copy of the actual will itself.  The will contains several important clues about George Langford, Sr.  First and most importantly, it gives the name of his wife and the name of his children.  We can also conclude that he did in fact die in May 1782 as he wrote the will that month and at the end of that same month, his will is proven.  That provides us with a fairly accurate time of death within 3 weeks (the beginning of May to the 3rd week of May in 1782).

The following is the Last Will & Testament of George Langford of Warren County, North Carolina.

"In the Name of God Amen. I George Langford of the State of North Carolina and county of Warren am weak and sick but sound in mind and memory. Praised be God do make and ordain this my last Will and testament in manner and form following Viz.

First and Principally I recommend my soul into the hands of God who gave it, hoping through the meritorious Death of Jesus Christ my Saviour, to receive free pardon for all my sins past and ask for my body to be buried at the discretion of my executors hereafter nominated.

Item My will is that I leave all this tract of land whereon I now live to be equally divided among my four sons John, George, Kirby and Joab Langford to them and their heirs forever and my will is that my son John Langford to take care of his mother during her natural life. My will further is that if any of my sons should die before they come of age or marriage, then his or their parts to be equally divided among my surviving sons.

Item I give to my daughter Delilah one feather bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever. My will further is that after my son Joel arrives to the age of twenty one years then my personal estate to be sold and equally divided among my wife and all my children.

I appoint my dear wife and my son John Langford executors of this my last will and testament revoking and annulling and making void all other wills and testaments before made. I witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this first day of September one thousand seven hundred and eighty

On May 23, 1782, George Langford's will was proven in court as recorded in the Warren County, North Carolina Minutes to the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions.  The actual court record entry is transcribed as follows:  "The Last and Will and Testament of George Lankford, deceased, proved by the oath of Thomas Newman and Thomas Wilson, and on motion the same is ordered to be recorded. "

There is a separate entry in the Warren County, North Carolina Minutes to the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions immediately following the will being proven on that same day.  This entry is transcribed as follows:  "Judith Lankford returned into Court an Inventory of the Estate of George Lankford, deceased, on oath and ordered to be recorded, who also took the Oath of Executrix."

Notes for George Langford, Jr.:

Copy of the actual marriage bond for George Langford, Jr. and Pattsy Mallary

I have added a Jr. after this George to better aid in separating this George from his father.  None of the documentation I have seen to date differentiates between the two with a Sr. or Jr.

I am currently speculating if this George Langford is the same one that served in the Revolutionary War.  In the Revolutionary War Service Records 1775-1783, there is a Private George Langford, Roll Box: 40, listed.  I am not yet certain if these two people are the same, but Georges birth date would coincide with serving in the Revolutionary War.

On December 3, 1790, in Warren County, North Carolina, George Langford sells some of his property.  It is recorded as follows:

"George Langford to William Bartlett, 37 acres, recorded 3 December 1790, Samuel (x) Bartlett, witness."  Poldi Tonin, another fellow Langford researcher located this transaction.

Notes for William Fan:

William's last name is recorded as Fain, Fan and Fann from the records I have researched.

William Fan probably re-married after being married to Delilah Langford.  There is a marriage entry in the Warren County, North Carolina Marriage bonds showing a marriage between a William Fan and a Polley Long on March 1, 1791.

On May 28, 1791, William was the administrator of an estate.

"Administration on the Estate of William Martin, deceased, is granted to William Fan, who entered into bond for that purpose with Wyatt Hawkins, his security, and the said William Fann qualified accordingly and also returned an Inventory of the Estate of said deceased."

On August 29, 1793, the court issued the following order to William Fan:

"Ordered that Bennett Smith, Daniel Fain and William Fann and Gray Mabry be appointed Patroller's in Capt. Patrick's District."

On February 24, 1796, William proved a deed:

"William Fain proved a deed from Jeremiah Bush to John Mayfield and the same is ordered to be registered."

Notes for Richard Gray:

On August 29, 1804 it is:  "Ordered that Richard Gray, orphan of William Gray, be bound to Thomas Paschall."  It is important to point out that Thomas Paschall had a son named Joshua Paschall.  Joshua married Susan Langford, Delilah's niece (Susan was a daughter of Joab Langford).  These court minutes also furnish the father's name of Richard which is an excellent find.

      37.  Benjamin D.4 Lankford, Sr. (John3 Langford, George2, John1) was born 1795 in Warren County, North Carolina, and died December 10, 1854 in His Residence, Warren County, Kentucky.  He married (1) Nancy Wood Abt. 1817 in Prob. Kentucky, Possibly North Carolina, daughter of Henry Wood and Sarah Lawson.  She was born July 20, 1795 in Warren County, North Carolina, and died October 02, 1840 in Kentucky (Probably not Simpson County).  He married (2) Mary Ann Eliza Cherry December 10, 1843 in Warren County, Kentucky, daughter of William Cherry and Frances Taylor.  She was born March 18, 1810 in Warren County, Kentucky, and died December 22, 1898 in Warren County, Kentucky.

Notes for Benjamin D. Lankford, Sr.:

No other ancestor has intrigued me more than Benjamin D. Lankford during my research into our family's history.  He is one of the pivotal ancestors in our family history and the one that has tied many of us together.  Benjamin is perhaps a keystone ancestor for tying the two compilers of this research.  As you will see, Benjamin had two wives.  Bill K. Langford descends from Benjamin's first marriage to Nancy Wood.  Jeff Davis descends from Benjamin's 2nd marriage to Mary Ann Eliza Cherry.  I know that there are other ancestor's that have touched or intrigued other members of my family, but unraveling the mystery of Benjamin has been one of my quests.  No documentation that I have found refers to Benjamin as Sr., however he did have a son named Benjamin D. Lankford so I have added the Sr. and Jr. where appropriate to identify the two more easily.

In addition to the conventional based research that we have conducted on Benjamin D. Lankford, we though it important to use the tool of DNA science to validate both the paternal lines of Bill's and Jeff's side of the Langford families.  Benjamin is the key ancestor where this DNA validation begins to take shape.

Benjamin D. Lankford was born in 1795 in Warren County, North Carolina.  He was he oldest recorded son of John Langford and Martha "Patsey" Duke.  Benjamin also has a rather impressive legacy of fathering what I believe to be a total of 15 children between his two wives.  Benjamin was a farmer for the entire course of his life. Additionally, he and several of his children were not the type to stay in the same area over the course of their lifetime.  As you will see, there was quite a bit of migration from this family pack.

In May 1814, at the age of 19, Benjamin was drafted to fight against the British in the War of 1812.  Benjamin was assigned to the 1st Regiment of the North Carolina Militia.  This Regiment was commanded by Colonel Duncan McDonald.  Benjamin's Company was commanded by a Lieutenant John L. Laughter, who I believe to be none other than John Langford Laughter, son of John Laughter and Mary Langford.  I am still as of this date, looking at that connection with some other researchers.

War of 1812 Pension & Bounty Land Warrant Complete File

There is also a War of 1812 Pension Record for a John Langford that served in the 1st Regiment of the North Carolina Militia under Colonel McDonald.  I had originally assumed that this John Langford was Benjamin's brother, John D. Langford.  It seemed to make sense that two brothers would have served in the same Regiment.  Upon closer examination though, I have determined that Benjamin's brother John D. Langford could NOT have served in the War of 1812.  John D. Langford was born in 1808.  This would have made him approximately 6 years old in 1814 when the North Carolina Militia was called into service.  I found it hard to  believe that there was a 6 year old running across the battlefield with a rifle.  On September 15, 2004, I requested the Pension and Bounty Land Warrant File for this John Langford who served with Benjamin.  Perhaps he is a cousin or an Uncle.  We will soon hopefully see what history will tell us.

A fellow Langford genealogy researcher, was kind enough to share an excerpt from a book that gives us a glimpse of the conditions that Benjamin D. Lankford experienced during the War of 1812.  The book is:  “Frustrated Patriots: North Carolina and the War of 1812,” by Sarah McCulloh Lemmon; 1973, The University of North Carolina Press; ISBN 0-8078-1209-9;  Pages. 88-89:

"Clothing and shelter were not for the most part a problem for the militiamen, for their term of service was brief. There were, however, some exceptions. The troops called out during the summer of 1812 to man the forts until the regular army could take over found themselves still in service as September wore on. The nights began to get cold and their commanding officers feared that "to many it may prove fatal" unless clothes and blankets were soon secured. Log houses "covered well with clapboards" were erected for shelter. These men were eventually relieved by the regulars. A more difficult situation arose in 1814 and 1815, when the militia again went on duty along the coast, some to Norfolk and others to Fort Hampton and Beacon Island. The men had marched with their summer clothing and, as in the case of Wellborn's Tenth Regiment, were not supplied with winter clothing before cold weather came. Appeals were made in the press for gifts to help these soldiers secure clothing and blankets. The situation at Norfolk was "almost incredible" reported Colonel Duncan McDonald to Governor Miller; some 160 men had already died in his regiment. The men on Beacon Island had no wood for fires, and indeed no fireplaces; their only clothing was summer homespun. Of the 451 men stationed there, only 180 were in good health and able to report for duty."

This person was also kind enough to share another excerpt from a book that describes another interesting insight.  This book is called: "North Carolina the History of a Southern State." by Hugh Talmage Lefler and Albert Ray Newsome; 1954 and 1963 by UNC Press: Page 295.

"In September, 1814, after a British force had burned the national capital and had threatened the whole Chesapeake area, Madison (President James Madison) requisitioned 1,500 North Carolina Militia of those already in service to 'march with all possible dispatch to aid in the defense of Norfolk, Virginia.  They carried out orders, reached that city, where they were soon joined by another 1,000 from North Carolina.  But they remained idle and North Carolina citizens were called on to supply them with clothing and blankets, since the United States government was unable to do so."

Based upon these two separate accounts that tell similar tales, it would appear that Benjamin's Regiment never saw any combat action.  Their biggest enemy it would appear was logistics; food, clothing and shelter.

Benjamin was discharged as a private from the North Carolina Militia on February 2, 1815 in Norfolk, Virginia.  Shortly after his discharge from the Militia, Benjamin began to migrate to Kentucky.  His migration occurred sometime between 1815 and 1817.

Benjamin was allotted 2 bounty land warrants from his service in the War of 1812.  They were numbered: 10,069-80-50 and 13,018-80-55.  10,069 and 13,018 are the actual Warrant serial numbers.  The 80 signifies the acreage of the Warrant.  The 50 and 55 represents the year that the Warrant was issued.  I have researched these bounties and Benjamin was not the one that claimed them.  This was not uncommon.  Many soldiers would sell their bounty land warrants.

Benjamin married his first wife, Nancy Wood, about 1817 probably in Warren County, Kentucky.  The proof for this union is rather interesting I think. Benjamin's second wife, Mary Ann Eliza Cherry gives an account of Benjamin's life when she applied to the Pension Bureau to receive Benjamin's Pension check after he passed away in 1854.  On page 2 of her affidavit, she mentions the year and place of Benjamin's first marriage (Mary Ann testifies that they were married in Simpson County but at the time of the marriage, it would have actually been Warren County as Simpson County was not formed for two years later in 1819).  Additionally, Mary Ann records the year and place of Nancy's death (October 2, 1840 in Simpson County).  Benjamin was obviously very honest and forthwith about his first marriage to his second wife in order for Mary Ann to recall this type of information.

Current day Simpson County, Kentucky, is located adjacent to and immediately south of Warren County.  Simpson County Kentucky was created by a Legislative Act of January 28, 1819 from Logan, Warren, and Allen Counties.  This is important to note because as you may have noticed, Benjamin is found in both Simpson and Warren Counties during his lifetime.

About 1817, Benjamin and Nancy had their first child in Warren County, Kentucky.  This causes me to speculate that they were married during their migration in Kentucky while crossing the Cumberland Gap or someother migratory route I have yet to identify.  Nancy Wood was born on July 20, 1795 in North Carolina.

Benjamin named the majority of his son's after famous military leaders and some prominent political figures.  A couple of these figures are not so famous in words, but by action.  I will add a little history in each of his son's genealogy area of who I believe they were named after.  Benjamin and Nancy had what I believe to be 9 children, all of which are listed below.

In 1828, Benjamin's father, John Langford passed away.  In his his Last Will and Testament (written in 1823 and executed in August 1828), John gives his son, Benjamin D. Langford, 55 1/2 acres of land adjacent to John E. Tucker and Michael W. Paschall in Warren County, North Carolina.

I have researched the Warren County, North Carolina, deeds to determine what became of the 55 acres left by hist father, John Langford, to Benjamin D. Lankford.  I employed the services of Ginger L. Christmas-Beattie, a very well known Warren County, NC researcher and old document transcriptionist to investigate all of the available Land deeds within 5 years in direction of John Langford's death.   She did come up with many interesting Deeds that I was unaware of, but nothing on the sale or disposition of this 55 acres of land.

My current suspicion is that Benjamin was never aware that his father had passed away.  John was in North Carolina and Benjamin was living in Kentucky.  I believe that Benjamin was never aware that he had been willed these 55 1/2 acres.  Secondly, John mentions Benjamin toward the end.  Perhaps he believed there was no way to get word to his son Benjamin and merely listed him as a courtesy.  I continue to search for a record of this 55 1/2 acre transaction, if it does exist.  We may never know for sure.

On October 2, 1840 in Warren County, Kentucky, Benjamin lost his first wife Nancy Wood, after 23 years of marriage.  (Source: War of 1812 Pension & Bounty Land Warrant Record).  I believe that the Civil War Union Army Veteran, James W. Lankford, was the last child she gave birth to.

On December 10, 1843 in Warren County, Kentucky, 3 years after the death of his first wife, Benjamin married Mary Ann Eliza Cherry.  They were married by D.L. Mansfield, Minister of the Gospel.  (Source: Marriage Certificate, War of 1812 Pension Record).  Mary Ann was also previously married to James Otey.  You will see Mary Ann's name listed as Mary Ann Otey.  Benjamin D. Lankford and Mary Ann Eliza Cherry had 6 children that I am aware of.  The first born was Thomas in 1844in Warren County, Kentucky and the last was Spotswood Ewing Lankford in 1854 in Warren County, Kentucky.

On December 10, 1854, Benjamin D. Lankford passed away in Warren County, Kentucky.  Sadly, it would appear that his last born child Spotswood, was only 6 days old when his Father passed away.  It must have made Benjamin feel proud to be able to hold his newly born son just before he died.  There are several different dates given for the death of Benjamin D. Lankford, all of which occurred in 1854.  These include:  December 10, December 13, and December 23.  I have opted to choose December 10, 1854 as that was the date given by Mary Ann Eliza Cherry in her affidavit to receive Benjamin's Pension.  My search continues for the location of Benjamin's grave site, if there is indeed a marked tombstone.

The 1860 US Census does not show Benjamin, which would support the research that he died in 1854 which would have been before this census.  Additionally, this would make me believe that he is buried somewhere in Warren County (possibly Bowling Green) as his wife had not left the county yet.

I have corresponded with Seth L. Warner to get a feel for his thoughts on the connection of my Benjamin D. Lankford and the Benjamin D Lankford that is the son of the John Langford listed in his book.  For those who are unaware of Seth, he authored the genealogy booklets entiltled, "The Descendants and Antecedents of John Parham Rose and Mary H. (Langford) Rose of Warren County, North Carolina.  Mary H. Langford is who I "believe" to be the sister of my Benjamin D. Lankford.  Seth was correct about Benjamin serving in the War of 1812 with his future brother in law, John Parham Rose and about serving under Captain John Langford Laughter.  What is incorrect in his research on Benjamin though is the fact that Benjamin migrated to Tennessee.  There is indeed a Benjamin Lankford that was born ca. 1798 in somewhere in North Carolina and was living in District 6, Lewis County, Tennessee in the 1850 Census in Household #94.  Benjamin D. Lankford was living in Warren County, Kentucky at the time of the 1850 Census and we have documented proof (based upon the War of 1812 Pension and Bounty Land Warrant File from NARA) that our Benjamin was in fact the one that served in the War of 1812 with John Parham Rose and John Langford Laughter.  Therefore, the conclusion that Seth came up with was in error.  In his defense however, when I correponded with him last year (2006), he made it clear to me that he was not entirely sure on that information and researchers should keep in mind that his research was focused on the Rose descendant's whereas mine has been focused on the Langford descedant's.  There is also a Benjamin Lankford that was born ca. 1792 in North Carolina listed on the 1870 US Census, Mt. Pleasant PO, Harlan County, Roll 468, Book 1, District 1, Page 18, Household #117 that is NOT our Benjamin.  Remember, our Benjamin died in 1854 so he could not possibly be living in 1870.  This Benjamin is also found in the 1850 Census in Harlan County, Kentucky.

(5)  1800 US Census, Warren County, North Carolina.  Living in the household is:  1 Free White Male under the age of 10 (presumably Benjamin D. Lankford), 1 Free White Male between the age of 10 and 15, 1 Free White Male between the age of 16 and 25, 1 Free White Male between the age of 26-44 (presumably John Langford himself), 3 Free White Females under the age of 10 (Sarah, b. 1797, Delia, b. 1797 & Martha H., b. 1799), 2 Free White Females between the age of 16 and 25 and 1 Free White Female between the age of 26 and 44 (presumably Martha Patsey Duke Langford).

(6) 1810 US Census, Warren County, North Carolina, Roll 42, Book 1, Page 749.  The head of the household is listed as John Langford.  The following persons are residing in this household:  1 Free White Male under the age of 10 years old (John D. Langford); 1 Free White Male between the age of 10 and 15 (presumably Benjamin D. Lankford); 1 Free White Male age 45 and over (presumably John Langford); 3 Free White Females under the age of 10 (presumably his youngest daughters Mary H. Langford, Ailsey T. Langford and Mahala W. Langford); 2 Free White Females between the age of 10 and 15 (presumably Sarah M. Langford and Martha H. Langford); 1 Free White Female between the age of 16 and 25 (presumably his eldest daughter, Delia T. Langford) and finally 1 Free White Female age 45 and over (presumably Martha Duke).

(7) 1820 US Census,in Warren County, Kentucky.  The census shows Benjamin D. Lankford as the Head of Household.  Living in the household is 1 free white male between age 16 and under 26 (this would be Benjamin), 2 free white females under the age of 10 (these would be Jane and Eleanor) and 1 free white female age 16-26 (this would be his first wife, Nancy Wood).

(8) 1830 US Census, Simpson County, Kentucky, Sheet 29A.  Living in this household is 1 Free White Male under the age of 5, 4 Free White Males between the age of 5 and 10 years old, 1 Free White Male between the age of ten and fifteen, 1 free white male between the age of 30 and 40 (Benjamin D. was b. 1795 = 35 yrs. old), 4 Free White Females between the age of ten and fifteen, 1 Free White Female between the age of 15 and 20 and 1 free white female between the age of 30 and 40 (Nancy Wood was b. 1795 = 35 yrs. old).  There are no slaves listed in this household with a total of 13 people residing at this household.  Pay particular attention to the following 5 neighboring families as they are an important anchor on the following 1840 census.  They are:  Deathridge, Hendrick, Lockhart, Noel and Slofs.

(9) 1840 US Census, Simpson County, Kentucky, Roll 124, Book 1, Sheet 187.  This household lists 2 Free White Males between the age of 5 and 10 years old, 1 Free White Male between the age of 30 and 40, 3 Free White Females under the age of 5, 1 Free White Female between the age of 5 and 10 years old and 1 Free White Female between the age of 30 and 40 years old.  There are no slaves listed and the total quantity of people listed is 8.  Additionally, 2 people in the family are listed as being employed in agriculture.  Now for the discrepancies found in the 1840 Census.  The first and most obvious error is the spelling of his name.  It is listed as Benjamin P. Landford.  Secondly, the ages for Benjamin and Nancy appear to be inaccurate.  If both Benjamin and Nancy were born in 1795, they would be 45 years old.  This means that they would both be recorded inaccurately in the wrong column.  Now, do you remember the neighboring families of Deathridge, Hendrick, Lockhart, Noel and Slofs?  They are all still living right next to Benjamin and Nancy.  One family is a coincidence but 5 is unbelievable.  This leads me to believe that the enumerator has made multiple errors on this census.  This provides me with another important fact.  Benjamin has lived in the same location for at least 10 years and possibly as many as 20 years.

(10) 1850 US Census, Warren County, Kentucky, District 1, Sheet 29, Household #391,  (Enumerated on September 2, 1850), Line #13, The census shows Benjamin D. Lankford (Age:  55, Sex: Male, Occupation:  Farmer) born in North Carolina, residing with his wife Mary and 6 children.

Marriage Notes for Benjamin Lankford and Nancy Wood:

Currently, I have been unable to find a marriage record of any type for Benjamin and Nancy.  There is definitely  NO record of the marriage in Simpson County, Kentucky.  As I believe they were married in 1817 (before the 1819 county line shift to Simpson), I will continue to explore the possibility of a record existing in Warren County, Kentucky or perhaps in another neighboring county.

It is also possible that Benjamin and Nancy were married in North Carolina.  If Warren County, Kentucky does not turn up anything, I will explore this possibility.  A volunteer researcher in Simpson County, Kentucky informed me that the courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1882 so there are no marriage records, as such, prior to that date.

Notes for Mary Ann Eliza Cherry:

Mary Ann Eliza Cherry was born on March 18, 1810 in Warren County, Kentucky.  She was the daughter of William Cherry and Frances Taylor.

On May 23, 1835 in Warren County, Kentucky, Mary Ann Eliza Cherry married her first husband, James Otey.  I feel that is important to include some information about Mary's first marriage to James Otey.  Many of the documented references show Mary's last name as Otey even after her 1st husband passed away.  That is not uncommon.  James Otey was born about 1780 in New Kent County, Virginia and died on September 22, 1837 in Warren County, Kentucky.  James' parents were James Otey and Frances Mary Graves.  James Otey was married to Martha Cowles before his marriage to Mary Ann.

Mary was paid a pension of $12 per month from the U.S. Government for Benjamin's service during the War of 1812 after he passed away.

The Cherry family has some rather interesting history.  Mary had a brother named George Washington Cherry Born:  August 23, 1822 in Warren County, Kentucky Died:  May 29, 1911 in Warren county, Kentucky Buried:  Halls Chapel Cemetery, Warren County, Kentucky.  George was the father of Henry.  Henry Hardin Cherry Born:  November 16, 1865 in Halls Chapel, Warren County, Kentucky Died:  August 1,  1937 in Bowling Green, Warren County, Kentucky Henry Hardin Cherry was the founder of Western Kentucky University.  I felt that it was important to add this as many relatives were wondering about the connection of Mary Ann Cherry and Western Kentucky University.

(3)   1860 US Census, District 2, Bowling Green, Warren County, Kentucky, Page 651 (Hand Numbered), Household #573.  She is listed as Mary Lankford, age: 50, female.  In 1860, her son James Otey from her prior marriage has now taken over the roll of Head of Household.  There are also 2 first names that are very unique that help to better establish our ancestors. They are Winfield and Spotswood.

(4)   1870 US Census, Green Castle District, Warren County, Kentucky, Page 24, Household # 154.  The census shows MARY LANKFORD (age: 60, female, white, House Keeper, born in Kentucky) living with her children: Richard I. (age: 34, male, white, farmer),  Winfield S. (age: 20, white, male, farmer) and Spotswood E. (age: 15, white, male, attending school).  This census also shows us that Mary cannot read and write as indicated by the check mark in the column under "Person's over the age of 30 who cannot read and write."  This is not uncommon for a woman of Mary's age.  There are several other non-Langford's listed on this census page that cannot read and write either.  What a wonderful feeling of pride Mary must have had for Richard.  Here was a woman who could not read and write, and yet her son would become a Surgical Doctor.

War of 1812 Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Complete File - NARA

On August 25, 1801, John Rose was bound as an apprentice:

"John Rose, a base born, child of Sally Rose is bound to Thomas Wilson, to learn the Art and Mystery of a planter until he arrives to the age of 21 being now 8 years of age."

John fathered an illegitimate child in 1817.  This required him to post a bastardy bond.  The mother of this child is recorded as Hicks Nuckols, a single woman.

Notes for Lewis Henry Langford:

His nickname was "Boney".  Lewis "Boney" visited his brother, Thomas Abner Langford, in Alabama after the family re-connected.  The family thought Tom was dead so he was left out of his parents' wills....from what I've been told, Boney made the visit to rectify this & offer Tom his equal share of the estate.  Tom appreciated this but he had been fairly successful in his mercantile business & declined the offer......he knew he wouldn't return to North Carolina &  felt the family there would keep the farm going.  Tom did own farm land in Alabama but it was farmed by sharecroppers....Tom evidently didn't like farming.  he was living in a small town (close to his parents) & working as a clerk in a store before he enlisted in the Civil War......this from his grandson, John O. Wise.

August 8, 2004.  I corresponded via e-mail with a nice woman by the name of Janet Armstrong.  She is a descendant of William Alexander Langford and opened up this line of the Langford family.  Interestingly enough, she is also the treasurer of the Genealogy Society of White County, Illinois.  Also of great importance is the lead from Janet indicating that a she had a distant cousin named Bill Langford who was also conducting Langford Family Genealogy research and ended up being the co-author of this research.

SUMMARY OF SOURCES FOR WILLIAM ALEXANDER LANGFORD:

(1)   Marriage Record.  Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, 1763-1900.  Groom: William A. Langford, Bride: Elizabeth A. Langford Moore, Date: February 23, 1882; Volume: 012, County: White.

(2)   1850 US Census, Kentucky, Warren County, District 1, Sheet 29, Household #391.  He is listed as William Lankford, age: 13, male.

(3)   1860 US Census, Deckers District, Ohio County, Kentucky, Roll 390, Book 1, Household #449.  He is listed as Wm. A. Lankford, age: 24, male, occupation:  laborer.  It is interesting to note that his future first wife, Delila Shull, is living only one house away. This census shows him living next door to Delila as a laborer.  William is 24 years old at the time and they marry 1 year after the census was conducted.

(4)   1870 US Census, Cool Spring Precinct, Ohio County, Kentucky, Roll 492, Book 1, Page 26, Household #172, Family #168.  He is listed as Wm. A. Lankford, age: 34, male, farmer, Value of real estate: $800, Value of personal estate: $400.

(5)   1880 US Census, Carmi, White County, Illinois, District #152, Household #96.  He is 44 years old at the time of this census.  The head of the household is Jeremiah Rusher.  Now for an important fact about William and this particular census.  He is listed as a Widower.  This would coincide with his first wife, Delilah Ann Shull passing away less than a year before.  Additionally, you will find all of their children dispersed throughout the nearby area.  I would assume that it was too difficult to raise these children on his own.  Perhaps he was doing the best he could by finding them all homes for food and shelter and sending any money he could.  I sure wish we could take a glimpse at the 1890 census to see if he gets them all back once he is married again.

(6)   1900 US Census, Carmi Township, White County, Illinois, Roll 351, Book 2, Sheet 6B, Household #116.  He is listed as William Langford.

      81.  Dr. Richard Irvin5 Langford (Benjamin D.4 Lankford, Sr., John3 Langford, George2, John1) was born April 10, 1846 in Warren County, Kentucky, and died January 01, 1901 in Select, Ohio County, Kentucky.  He married Martha Frances Taylor February 27, 1886 in Morgantown, Butler County, Kentucky, daughter of James TAYLOR and Marcia FLOYD.  She was born August 27, 1849 in Butler County, Kentucky, and died March 04, 1939 in Select, Ohio County, Kentucky.

Notes for Dr. Richard Irvin Langford:

Langford and Hosey Family Photograph. (ca. 1890)

Langford and Hosey Family Photograph (ca. 1899/1900)

Richard Irvin Langford was born on April 10, 1846 in Warren County, Kentucky. He was the second oldest child of Benjamin D. Lankford and Mary Ann Eliza Cherry.

Richard practiced medicine for 15 years and was a long time farmer before that.  Dr. Langford was a member of the Masonic lodge and in keeping with the Masonic tradition, Richard was never known to charge a widow for any medical services.  Richard would have been slightly to young to have fought in the Civil War between 1861 and 1865.  This would have made him only 15 years old at the start of the war.

Medical Diploma's of Dr. Richard Irvin Langford

Richard's name is spelled in several different formats, especially his middle initial.  Specifically, I have seen his middle initial recorded as an "I" and a "J".  I have chosen to use "I" as in Irvin.

July 14, 2004:  Notes to Jeff Davis from Maxine Langford (Grand Daughter of Richard).  Maxine seems to recall her grandfather (Richard) telling her the following story.  Richard used to work on a farm for a man named what she thinks is "Threlka."  This gentleman supposedly sent Richard to Nashville, TN to become a Doctor.  Maxine believes that this gentleman may have been a doctor himself.

POSSIBLE RELATED RESEARCH NOTE:  I find this very interesting for two reasons.  One, there is a very prominent family called "Threlkel" that lived in that area.  There was even a ferry named after this family, The Threlkel Ferry which used to go across the Greene River.  Secondly, I know that Richard was also very generous in so far as adopting children and not charging widows for any medical services.  Perhaps this Dr. Threkel instilled some sort of large value here.  This portion is merely speculative for now until I can research this further.

Interesting tombstone notes:  There are several stories associated with the basic shape of tombstones in this era.  One is that men who either fought or believed in the Confederate point of view, had a pointed tombstone.  This prevented Yankee soldiers from sitting on their tombstone to rest.  The second story I have heard is that most people who were in the Masons had a pointed tombstone.  There was a large membership of masons in the south.  I note this because Richard's tombstone is pointed at the top.

It would have been nice to use the 1900 Mortality Schedule for Richard, but the 1890 and 1900 schedules were destroyed.

(11)  1900 US Census, Cromwell District, Ohio County, Kentucky, Sheet 12A, Household #220.  The census shows RICHARD LANGFORD (Head of household, white male, born in May 1846, age: 54, married for 14 years, born in Kentucky, Father born in North Carolina, Mother born in Kentucky, Occupation: Doctor) living with his wife Martha (Wife, white female, born in August 1849, age: 50, married for 14 years, given birth to 9 children, 6 are still living, born in Kentucky and parents born in Kentucky), William I. (Son, born in December 1886, age: 13), Everett (Son, born in August 1890, age: 9), Laura Kimbley (Orphan, born in June 1889, age: 10), Loretta Hosie (Step-daughter, white female, born in February 1881, age: 19, Single) Thomas C. Hosey (Step-son, white male, born in October 1879, age: 21, married for 4 months) and Flora B. (Step-daughter, white female, born in February 1877, age: 23, married for 4 months).  There are a couple of other facts buried within this census upon close examination.  Richard owns his farm and it is free of mortgage.  This census was conducted on the same year that one of the Old Langford/Hosey  Family Photo's was taken and I used it to help determine who all of the people were in the photograph.  This particular census is a gold mine of proof and verification of our ancestors.  Most importantly, it shows the relationship of the relationship between Richard Langford and his 2 sons, Everett and William.  It is also one of several pieces of proof that Richard was a Doctor.  Lastly, as with all 1900 census, it gives the birth month and year of each individual.
