      1.  John1 LANGFORD was born June 07, 1685 in Prob. Hurley, Berkshire, England, and died August 07, 1762 in Lunenburg County, Virginia.  He married Rebecca [--?--] Aft. 1705 in Virginia.  She was born Aft. 1689, and died Aft. 1734.

Notes for John LANGFORD:

IMPORTANT NOTE:  I am still conducting research on John and his wife Rebecca to further validate this connection.  Again, this provides us with a point in which to measure our "possible" ancestral connections.  It is still entirely possible that the sources I have gathered thus far for John are in fact, different people.  However, based upon the research materials on hand and that which I have reviewed, this is what I believe to be true.  My older second cousin, Linda Langford-Odom had mentioned this likely connection as well during her research.  I do not have her source materials however and have no way to determine how she also arrived at the possible conclusion.  Like all Genealogies however, this is and always will be a work in progress.

It is my current assumption that John Langford was born on June 7, 1685 in Hurley, Berkshire, England.  (Source: Parish registers, 1560-1969, and church and civil records, 1844-1963 Church of England. Parish Church of Hurley.)

It is also my belief that John migrated to the New World sometime in 1705 through the State of Virginia as on May 2, 1705 in New Kent County, Virginia, A John Lankford is involved in a 3 person land acquisition of William Major's property.  William Major is obtaining this land and John Lankford is used as a headright in this transaction.  It is located on the south side of the York River, near Nantecock Creek. This should provide a nice general geographical reference point to analyze at a later date.  Source:  Cavaliers and Pioneers, Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, Volume 3, Patent Book No. 9, Page 95.

On November 2, 1705, a John Langford acquired a piece of land in King and Queen County, Virginia.  The land was 228 acres in size.  I do not believe that this John is the same person as our John Langford.  Based upon the current DNA results of the Langford/Lankford Surname project, the grouping of Langford's in this area appears to be claimed underneath another researcher's group (Gene Lankford in this case, who is one of the current DNA Project Coordinators).  As our DNA does not match this group even close, I would infer that this is a different John Langford. Additionally, the Stephen and Joseph Langford's in this area again lead me to believe that these are the Langford/Lankford ancestor's of Gene Lankford's group which bear the J2 Haplogroup marking in their DNA.  The last inference I would make is that is not very likely that

On September 20, 1722 in St. Peter's Parish (New Kent County, Virginia), a birth is recorded as follows: "Henry Son of John Langford born Septr.20th, 1722."

In 1746,  Lunenburg County, Virginia is formed from Brunswick County, Virginia

Two years later, In 1748, when John is approximately 65 years old, he is recorded in a list paying taxes for 1 Tithe in Lunenburg County, Virginia.  It is interesting to note that Richard and Henry Rottenberry are listed next to John Langford in this tax listing.  This is another consistent source as there are several land grants of John Langford that indicate the Rottenberry's as neighbors.

In 1749,  Lunenburg County, Virginia, A John Lankford pays taxes for1 tithe.  William Howard's district "from Butchers Creek to the extent of the County downwards."

In 1752, on a list taken by Field Jefferson in Lunenburg County, Virginia, John "Lanfurd" is charged a total of 2 tithes.  Henry "Landfurd" is indented underneath John's name.  I would infer a father and son relationship with this entry.  John's son, Henry, does not marry Priscilla Herndon until 1755, 3 years after this tax list was taken and would have been charged a tithe because of his age.

On August 10, 1756, while John is approximately 71 years old, he purchased 200 acres of land in the Lunenburg County, Virginia area.  Transcription of the Land Grant:

On September 17, 1759,  John is approximately 74 years old and is listed as a neighbor in a will.  There is another important piece of documentation found during this footstep.  John's son, George, is mentioned also.  Cumberland Parish is the Church's religious area better known as Lunenburg, Virginia.  Transcription of the will:  Before the Division of Cumberland Parish, Nov 1, 1760: The land of Francis Rainey Do. John & George Langford; the land of George Langford Do. Fras. Rainey & Jon. Boseman. RT 1985, p 42. (Langford is mentioned as a neighbor on the grant of land to Francis Raney in 1769.)

      7.  George2 Langford, Sr. (John1) was born Bet. 1730 - 1736 in Brunswick County (now Lunenburg County), Virginia, and died May 1782 in Warren County, North Carolina.  He married Judith [--?--] Abt. 1754 in Prob. Granville (Now Warren) County, North Carolina.  She was born Bet. 1727 - 1738 in Prob. Virginia, and died Aft. 1793 in Prob. Warren County, North Carolina.

Notes for George Langford, Sr.:

It is my belief that George Langford was born between 1730 and 1736 in Brunswick County, (later known as Lunenburg County) Virginia.  He married a woman by the name of Judith about 1754 in North Carolina. I have yet to establish either the maiden name of Judith or to find a marriage bond to determine their exact date of marriage.   It is unknown by me if such a record even exists as the marriage date is from an early period.  If there was a record, it would in my opinion most likely be found in a Parish Register.

It is important to note how the County lines in George's era shifted as he and his descendant's are recorded in all 3 of these counties.  In 1746,  Granville County, North Carolina is formed from Edgecombe County, North Carolina.  In 1764, Bute County, North Carolina is formed from Granville County, North Carolina.  In 1779, Warren County, North Carolina is formed from Bute County, North Carolina.  Bute County is also abolished after this transference.

In September 17, 1759 John and George Langford/Lankford are mentioned next to one another in the Returns of Processioning in Obedience to an order of Vestry, Before the Division of Cumberland Parish.  This is my first indication that George's father could be a John Langford and that George came from the Brunswick/Lunenburg County, Virginia area.

On May 1774, George Langford acquired a piece of land in Bute County, North Carolina as recorded in the Bute County, North Carolina Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions.  The acquisition is transcribed as follows:  "A Deed from James Williams to George Langford was proved by the oath of William Rose a Witness thereto and on Motion the Same is Ordered to be Registered."

This entry contains some very important information when analyzed closely and further supports the connection between father (George Langford, Sr.) and his children, specifically, John Langford.  Two of George's grand daughters (from his son John Langford) married men from the Rose family.  Secondly, we begin to see a migration pattern forming for George Langford from Lunenburg County, Virginia.  Bute County, North Carolina is abolished in 1779 and Warren County, North Carolina forms from this area.  This county line shift occurs 5 years after this land purchase.  Also, keep in my mind that Lunenburg County, Virginia is almost exactly due north of Bute County, North Carolina.

In that same month of May 1774, another court entry is recorded that holds some significance.  It is recorded as follows:

"George Tucker is appointed overseer of the road in the room of Robert King & That he keep the same in repair with the hands of Geo: Tucker, Dan'l Burford, Sam'l Jones, Allan Burton, John White, George Langford, George Rose, John Fowler, Alexander Fowler & Robert Davis &c.286"

This entry shows two additional clues about George's connection into the timeline besides his name being mentioned in a time and place.    We have our Rose connection again and keep in mind that one of George's sons, Joab, marries Betsey White as the White surname is mentioned.  The reference to maintaining a road implies that all of these people live somewhat close together.

On January 27, 1779, a George Langford is mentioned as a neighbor in  Bute County, North Carolina land transaction.  It is transcribed as follows:

"Thomas Richardson and Ann, his wife, of Bute County to Edward Marks, of Brunswick County, State of Virginia for 1,260 Pds. Va. money for 360 acres in Bute Co. on BS Smiths Creek from the Country (sic) Line  to the Camp Branch adj. Chas. Davis, George Lankford and old line ("as was") of Israel Roberson."  This recorded footstep is credited to Poldi Tonin, another Langford researcher. Keep in mind that in just a few months from this recorded footstep, the County of Bute will be abolished and Warren County, North Carolina will take it's place.  I think it is important to point out that it is just as likely that this recorded George Langford is actually George Jr.

In May 1782, George Langford writes his will.  Based upon the wording, George is suffering from some type of disease and knows he is going to die soon.  There are several publications that transcribe this will and are mentioned further down in the sources section for George.

Bill Kaye Langford provided a copy of the actual will itself.  The will contains several important clues about George Langford, Sr.  First and most importantly, it gives the name of his wife and the name of his children.  We can also conclude that he did in fact die in May 1782 as he wrote the will that month and at the end of that same month, his will is proven.  That provides us with a fairly accurate time of death within 3 weeks (the beginning of May to the 3rd week of May in 1782).

The following is the Last Will & Testament of George Langford of Warren County, North Carolina.

"In the Name of God Amen. I George Langford of the State of North Carolina and county of Warren am weak and sick but sound in mind and memory. Praised be God do make and ordain this my last Will and testament in manner and form following Viz.

First and Principally I recommend my soul into the hands of God who gave it, hoping through the meritorious Death of Jesus Christ my Saviour, to receive free pardon for all my sins past and ask for my body to be buried at the discretion of my executors hereafter nominated.

Item My will is that I leave all this tract of land whereon I now live to be equally divided among my four sons John, George, Kirby and Joab Langford to them and their heirs forever and my will is that my son John Langford to take care of his mother during her natural life. My will further is that if any of my sons should die before they come of age or marriage, then his or their parts to be equally divided among my surviving sons.

Item I give to my daughter Delilah one feather bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever. My will further is that after my son Joel arrives to the age of twenty one years then my personal estate to be sold and equally divided among my wife and all my children.

I appoint my dear wife and my son John Langford executors of this my last will and testament revoking and annulling and making void all other wills and testaments before made. I witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this first day of September one thousand seven hundred and eighty

On May 23, 1782, George Langford's will was proven in court as recorded in the Warren County, North Carolina Minutes to the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions.  The actual court record entry is transcribed as follows:  "The Last and Will and Testament of George Lankford, deceased, proved by the oath of Thomas Newman and Thomas Wilson, and on motion the same is ordered to be recorded. "

There is a separate entry in the Warren County, North Carolina Minutes to the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions immediately following the will being proven on that same day.  This entry is transcribed as follows:  "Judith Lankford returned into Court an Inventory of the Estate of George Lankford, deceased, on oath and ordered to be recorded, who also took the Oath of Executrix."

Notes for George Langford, Jr.:

Copy of the actual marriage bond for George Langford, Jr. and Pattsy Mallary

I have added a Jr. after this George to better aid in separating this George from his father.  None of the documentation I have seen to date differentiates between the two with a Sr. or Jr.

I am currently speculating if this George Langford is the same one that served in the Revolutionary War.  In the Revolutionary War Service Records 1775-1783, there is a Private George Langford, Roll Box: 40, listed.  I am not yet certain if these two people are the same, but Georges birth date would coincide with serving in the Revolutionary War.

On December 3, 1790, in Warren County, North Carolina, George Langford sells some of his property.  It is recorded as follows:

"George Langford to William Bartlett, 37 acres, recorded 3 December 1790, Samuel (x) Bartlett, witness."  Poldi Tonin, another fellow Langford researcher located this transaction.

Notes for William Fan:

William's last name is recorded as Fain, Fan and Fann from the records I have researched.

William Fan probably re-married after being married to Delilah Langford.  There is a marriage entry in the Warren County, North Carolina Marriage bonds showing a marriage between a William Fan and a Polley Long on March 1, 1791.

On May 28, 1791, William was the administrator of an estate.

"Administration on the Estate of William Martin, deceased, is granted to William Fan, who entered into bond for that purpose with Wyatt Hawkins, his security, and the said William Fann qualified accordingly and also returned an Inventory of the Estate of said deceased."

On August 29, 1793, the court issued the following order to William Fan:

"Ordered that Bennett Smith, Daniel Fain and William Fann and Gray Mabry be appointed Patroller's in Capt. Patrick's District."

On February 24, 1796, William proved a deed:

"William Fain proved a deed from Jeremiah Bush to John Mayfield and the same is ordered to be registered."

Notes for Richard Gray:

On August 29, 1804 it is:  "Ordered that Richard Gray, orphan of William Gray, be bound to Thomas Paschall."  It is important to point out that Thomas Paschall had a son named Joshua Paschall.  Joshua married Susan Langford, Delilah's niece (Susan was a daughter of Joab Langford).  These court minutes also furnish the father's name of Richard which is an excellent find.
