THOMAS LANE and ANNE GLEESON
The "Tinamba Lanes" (Detail kindly supplied by Sally Lane)
Michael and Ellen Lane's son Thomas Lane married Anne Gleeson at Koroit,
Victoria on
September 27th, 1905.
At the end of the World War One, due to small
income from their existing dairy farm and the limited opportunities for their
growing family the big decision to leave family and friends was made.
In 1920
they sold their interests at Koroit and ventured north to Lockhart, NSW to make a new start on
the farmland resulting from the recent sub-division of the Brookong Station in
the Riverina area where some family members had already
settled.
Their family of six sons, namely Michael, Leo, Thomas, Matthew, Desmond and
Gerald, and only daughter Margaret, stayed with Anne's sister Joanna Goodwin and
her family at "Glenroy". The conditions were fairly
"cramped" with two families sharing the limited space of one house.
One memory being of four sharing a double bed by being "top to tail".
Thomas Lane and his family took possession of the property "Tinamba"
in 1921, when they were able to move into their own residence on the property.
Although additions have been made to the property over the years, part of the
original dwelling is still in use today.
Their new life was sadly interrupted in 1925 when Thomas Lane became seriously
ill, and after a short illness, passed away on January 13th, 1926. This left Ann
the huge task of running the property whilst still caring for her family, She
was able to manage with the help and support of her neighbors.
By now the older boys were deciding on different aspects of future life.
Michael Lane entered St. Columba's Minor Seminary at Springwood in NSW to commence studies for the priesthood and was
after a short stay at St. Patrick's College, Manly, he went to the Lateran
University and the Irish College in Rome.
He was ordained in 1929 in Rome for the diocese of Wagga Wagga. He was 22 years of age
which was well below the minimum age of 24 years.
He was taken before the Pope,
Pius X1, who gave him special permission to be ordained before the regulation
age. This was completed by Cardinal Pompili on May 25th, 1929.
His mother Annie
Lane had made the long journey to Rome to be with him.
On December 19th, 1957 he was made Domestic Prelate of His Holiness Pope Pius
X11, and given the title of Monsignor.
Monsignor Michael Lane died on August 1st, 1995 and is buried in Corowa.
Leo Lane b1908, married Mary Healy in 1928 and settled on his own property "Kingsvale"
at Lockhart, and he farmed all his life.
He was a foundation member of the Corridale Sheep Association and held
great interest in the Osborn Football Club.
Leo and Mary had 7 children.
Leo passed away on September 17th, 1979 and Mary passed away February 1st, 2001.
The children born to Leo and Mary Lane were -:

Tom Lane b1910, married Marjorie
Veronica Lynch in 1936 and moved to his own property
nearby, "Clonlara" called after the town in County Clare, Ireland, where his
Grandfather Michael Lane was born.
He purchased the property in 1935 from the deceased estate of Garn Singh, an
Indian hawker who had only bought the property a year or so before he died. Garn
was cremated on top of the hill, about 300 meters north west of the house.
Tom paid 6 Pounds 16 Shillings for the 708 acre property at auction which
was less than what Garn Singh paid for it, so there was some delay in the
settlement because the Bank was going to lose on the winding up of the estate.
The first wheat season was a "bumper" but it was not always like that.
The good prices fetched at the wool auctions in the early 1950's enabled the
house to be upgraded to accommodate the large family.
Tom and Marge had 10 children.

Des Lane b1914, also decided to study for the priesthood and was ordained in 1941 at St.
Michael's Cathedral, Wagga Wagga, NSW
Following various appointments as Parish Priest he was appointed the Vicar
General of the Diocese of Wagga Wagga, which was a high point in his priestly
life. He passed away on March 4th, 1989 and is buried at Lockhart cemetery near
his parents.
Matt married Sheila O'Donnell in 1946 and they had 4 children.
Prior to his wedding Matt Lane had continued to help with the running of
"Tinamba".
Because it was felt that "Tinamba" could not provide a living for 2
young families (Matt and Gerald), Matt decided to try his luck at Corowa, where
his brother Mick was Parish Priest, and his sister Margaret and her husband Jack
Doyle, were living nearby at Buraja Station.
His mother had also decided to move to
Corowa.
He tried to buy a property but was unsuccessful, so he bought the
Riverina Hotel, and started on a change of career.

Gerry Lane at the end of 1932, aged 16 returned from boarding school to
work on and help run "Tinamba".
His work at "Tinamba" was interrupted in 1940 when he enlisted in the
Australian Army.
He left Australia in 1940 and returned, from the Middle East, in 1942.
It was on
his return from overseas that he became engaged to Margaret Mary Bush.
After a
further twenty months separation they were married in 1944 in Sydney by his
brothers, Fathers Michael and Desmond Lane.
In March 1945 Gerry was finally discharged from the army. He and Margaret then
returned to "Tinamba", having purchased a half share of the property
from his brother Matt, and leasing the remainder from his mother, thus allowing
her to move and reside in Corowa, NSW..
Gerry continued to work the property for the next forty-five years, the latter
years in partnership with his two younger sons
