The Maloney Connection.
Jeremiah Moloney.
Michael Lane of Shravokee, County Clare, Ireland was born in 1788 and married Catherine Moloney.
Their son, James Lane who in 1841 came to Victoria, which in those days was in the Colony of New South Wales, traveled with his cousin Jeremiah (Jerry) Maloney.
Their names appear on the manifest of the "Neptune" which arrived in1841.
The Moloney name is sometimes spelt Maloney on various certificates possibly due to the Irish accent.
Whilst James Lane and his brother Patrick Lane never married Jerry Moloney married Margaret Doherty at St. Francis Church, Port Fairy on November 1st, 1844. They were married by The Rev. Daniel MacEvey in in the presence of His Grace, The Most Rev. Archbishop Polding, who had both journeyed from Geelong on horseback to further the interests of the Catholic Church in the area.
Margaret had been previously married in Ireland to Dennis Kilfoy and had two children.
They were to have a further four children -:

Roderick Moloney |
James Moloney b1844 |
Thomas Jeremiah Moloney b1848 |
Mary Ann Moloney b1851 d1856 at Woodford |
Roderick was baptised on November 6th, 1843 at St. Francis Church, Melbourne and his parents gave their address as Port Fairy.
Margaret Moloney died in October, 1862 aged
47, and the informant was her
husband who listed her parents as Edmund Dougherty and her mothers name as
Mason. She was shown as being born in Ireland and had been in the colonies 21
years.
Margaret was buried at Warrnambool Cemetery.
Jeremiah Moloney at the time of his wife's death listed himself as an Innkeeper
at Woodford which is near Koroit. They were residents of Woodford at the
birth of Thomas in 1846 but it is not known when they first occupied the
inn which was known as the The
Travellers Rest but it was established prior
to 1848 when Woodford was described as a village with two public houses, the
other being the Woodford Inn.
Jeremiah Moloney died of heart disease at Tower Hill, Koroit on
July 12th, 1865 at the age of 47. His son James Moloney of Koroit was the
informant and Jeremiah was shown as a farmer and his parents were listed as
Patrick Moloney and his mothers name was unknown. He was buried at Warrnambool
Cemetery.
Prior to his death on July 12th, 1865 Jeremiah Moloney made a will dated June 27th, 1865
in which he made three bequests.
1. To his son James Moloney, who was 21 years
old, he left 105 acres of land being Portion 47 in the Parish of Yangery where
he resided.
He also left him 90 acres of land being Portion 34 in the Parish of Koroit, for
a period of 5 years and then it was to pass to his other son Thomas..
2. To his son Thomas Moloney, who was 17 years old, he left the above 34 acres of land being Portion 34 in the Parish of Koroit which was to pass to him 5 years from the date of the will. He left Thomas a further sum of 200 Pounds to be paid to him after the five years. This was to paid out of the future profits from the Yangery property.
3. To his cousin James Lane he left the sum of 25 pounds a year for life, as long as he lived in Victoria. This was also to be paid out of the future profits of the Yangery property. James Lane and Jeremiah Moloney came out on the same ship to Australia.
From the above it confirms that as James Lane was a cousin of Jeremiah Moloney then it is probable that the mother of James Lane, i.e. Catherine Moloney and the father of Jeremiah Moloney, Patrick Moloney were brother and sister.

Other Moloney
Connections.
James Lane's mother and Michael Lane's grandmother Elizabeth Gleeson when she married her husband Thomas Lane brought Peggy Moloney a cousin of her husband to Shravokee from what is now Heffermans's near Larkin's Pub (at crossroads to Parteen/Garraun) on the Limerick/ Broadford Road). This may have been as early as 1815.
Michael Lane senior, who was James
Lane's nephew, arrived in Victoria in 1864 Victoria on the ship "Great Victoria"
and was accompanied on the voyage by Ellen Moloney and Mary Moloney.
He was living at Woodford when he married Ellen Moloney in 1870. She was the
daughter of Michael Moloney and Ellen Molton of County Clare.
Witnesses at the wedding were a Michael Moloney and a Bridget Moloney.
Bridget may have been a sister of Ellen Moloney.
Ellen Moloney was one of 9 children and had a brother Roderick Moloney
back in County Clare.
None of Ellen's brothers came to Victoria but all her sisters came -:
Mary Moloney who married John Ryan. They lived at Hopkins Point.
Mary died in 1923.
Margaret Moloney who married James Downey in 1864. They lived at Koroit.
Catherine Moloney who married Michael Hennessy. They lived at Crossley.
Catherine died in 1924 aged 76.
Bridget Moloney who married John Quirk in 1873. They lived at Geelong.
Bridget died in 1925 aged 85.
The following is a family tree of John Quirk and Bridget Moloney -:

Thomas Lane, Roger Lane and Margaret Lane
whose parents were Thomas Lane and Ellen Moloney of County Clare,
Ireland, all came to Victoria between 1854 and 1867 and lived in the Koroit
area. They all had a connection with Michael Lane senior and are most probably
all related.
At the wedding of Roger Lane and Margaret O'Brien at Belfast (Port Fairy) in
1877 a witness to the wedding was a John Moloney.
