Lorinda was born April 12, 1834 in Vermont [probably Middlesbury]. She died: December 2, 1906 in Lanark Township, Portage County, Wisconsin. Buried: Sheridan Cemetery in Farmington, Wisconsin.  View photo of Lorinda and some of her children.

She married Griffin L. Smith on 4 December 1854
She married Caleb Harris  on 12 July 1868
She married Nathan Howard   on 8 April 1884


1854 - Lorinda Lamphear and Griffin L. Smith marry
Lorinda Lamphear and Griffin Smith were married by Joseph William on 4 December 1854 in Wautoma, Washara County, Wisconsin. They list thier residence as Lind, Waupaca County, Wisconsin.

Griffin Smith was born around 1832 in New York.  He died 16 Jan 1863 in Jackson, Madison County, Tennesse of Typhoid Fever.

They had the following children:

  1. Betsey Ann Smith Born: October 15, 1855 in Lind, Waupaca County, Wisconsin.  She married William W. Cartwright on 16 August 1873 in Waupaca, Wisconsin.  She died 7 Janary 1943 in Farmington, ,Waupaca County, Wisconsin.
  2. Mary Ellen Smith Born: December 3, 1856 in Waupaca County, Wisconsin.  Married Oliver Brown on 16 September 1877 in Wisconsin.  She died on 15 January 1946 in Waupaca, Wisconsin.
  3. Elwood G. Smith  Born 21 May 1858 in Waupaca County, Wisconsin.  He married Sybil I. Howard.  In 1943 he lived in Stevens Point, Wisconsn.  Elwood died on 8 October 1945 at the age of 87.  He is buried in Amherst Cemetery, Wisconsin.
  4. George W. Smith   Born 5 December 1859 in Waupaca County, Wisconsin.  He maried Rosie Vellie in 1882 in Wisconsin.  He died on 4 May 1886 at the age of 26.   He had one son, George Smith who was living in Springston, Idaho in 1939.
  5. Harriet Smith Born on 20 September 1861 in Waupaca County, Wisconsin.  She died on 1 March 1864 at the age of 2.
  6. Griffin L. Smith Born 20 August 1862 in Waupaca County, Wisconsin.  He married Lsa Vellie on 3 September 1884 in Wisconsin.  He died 1 August 1899 at the age of 36.

"In 1873 William Cartwright married Miss. Betsey Smith. She was born at Lind Center in Waupaca County October 15, 1855, daughter of Griffin and Lorinda (Lamphear) Smith, both of whom were born in New York State. Lorinda Lamphear was the daughter of Zebulon and Betsey (Hirer) Lamphier, who were among the earliest pioneer settlers of Lind Township. The Lamphear family is one that is frequently mentioned in the early annuals of the township. Griffin Smith came to Lind Township in the early fifties and he afterwards volunteered his services as a Union soldier and died at Jackson Tennessee in 1865. His widow survived him for a great many years and died at Amherst Wisconsin, December 2, 1906."

"COBTOWN. Griffin Smith, who was engaged in sawing wood Monday, met with a sad accident by losing his front finger and thumb. Dr. Pelton dressed the wounds, and thinks he will soon be able to be at work again."  [Griffin Smith Jr.]

"DIED: Griff Smith of the Third ward passed away of diphtheria between 6 and 7 o’clock Tuesday night. He was buried at 1 o’clock in the morning. The deceased leaves a wife and six children in straightened circumstances." [Griffin Smith Sr.]

1863, Jan - Griffin Smith dies while still enlisted in the military.  He died in Jackson, Madison County, Tennesse of Typhoid Fever.   Place of burial is unknown.

1863, March - Widow’s Declaration for Army Pension, State of Wisconsin, Waupaca County was issued for Lorinda.  Griffin Smith had served as a Private in the 14th Wisconsin Infantry, Company B.  He died while still enlisted.  She applied on April 28, 1863, Application Number 19872, Certificate 11466.

Mary Ellen Smith, born Dec 5, 1856, age 6 years
Elwood Smith, born March 21, 1858, age 5 years
George W. Smith, born Dec 3, 1859, age 3 years
Harriett Smith, born Sept 20, 1861, age 1 year
Griffin L. Smith, born Aug 20, 1862, age about 7 months

 

1868 Lorinda Lamphear and Caleb Harris marry.

Lorinda married Caleb Harris, son of Issac and Jane Harris on 12 July 1868 in Waupaca, Wisconsin.  The marriage was performed by W. B. Hubbard, Justice of the Peace.  Caleb's birth place is listed as Westport, Essex County, New York.  Wittnesses were Julius O. Cady and William Cartwright.  Calebls parents are listed as Isaac and Jane Harris.

They had the following children:

  1. Hattie Belle Harris.  Born 15 July 1869 in Farmington Township, Waupaca County, Wisconsin.  She married Andrew Alten Fenton on 15 September 1887.  In 1939 she was living in Amherst, Wisconsin. 

  2. Laura Irene Harris.  Born on 15 November 1870 in Farmington Township Wisconsin.  She married Hans C. Larsen/Magelund on 17 June 1891.  In 1943 she was living in Waupaca, Wisconsin. 

  3. Eva Harris.  Born after 1871 in Waupaca County, Wisconsin.  She married J. Freeman Lewis on 3 July 1894.  She was living in Yakima, Washington in 1939.

Widow’s Declaration for Army Pension.  Lorinda applies for Pension from the services of Caleb Harris.  Caleb served in the 37th Wisconsin Infantry, Compnay G.  Lorinda filed on August 21, 1891.  Application Number: 523,904.

1884 Lorinda Lamphear and Nathan Howard marry. 

The marriage ceremony of Lorinda and Nathan Howard was performed by John McFall in Farmington, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. George W. Smith and Rosa M. Velie were witnesses. Lorinda’s birth place is listed as Middlebery, Vermont. The marriage was registered on May 1, 1884. [Volume 4, Page 127]. Caleb’s occupation at the time of his marriage to Lorinda was "Miller and farmer". His residence was Lanark, Portage County,. Wisconsin. [note: George W. Smith and Rose Velie were married]   Nathan's parents are listed as Adolphus and Mary Howard.  His occupation is listed as Miller and farmer.  His birthplace listed as Schoharie County, New York.

1897, June - The estate of Lorinda’s father, Zebulon is settled. At this time Lorinda Howard is living in Amherst, Wisconsin.

1900 - Federal Census - Lanark Township, Portage County, Wisconsin.   Enumeration district 103 [or 105?], page 126

    [Note years of marriage is listed as 53 years, but his is incorrect.]

1905, December  - Lorinda Howard died on December 5, 1906 in Lanark, Wisconsin at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 16 days. On the record of death her birthplace is listed as New York [her actual birthplace was Vermont]. She died of "Organic disease of heart, Dropsy". F. E. Webster of Amherst, Wisconsin was the attending physician. L. J. Casey conducted the burial and her burial permit number was 36. She is buried in Sheridan, Wisconsin. The death was registered on December 7th, 1906 by W. H. Leahy, Town Clerk of Lanark, Wisconsin.

1905, December Obituary of Lorinda from the Waupaca Post:

"Mrs. Nathan Howard died at her home in Lanark last Sunday morning after a long illness. Lorinda Lamphere was born in the state of N.Y. April 15, 1832, came to Waupaca with her parents in the early 50’s where she was married to a Mr. Smith and settled on a farm in the town of Farmington where she buried her first husband some time after. She married again and her name became Harris. After his death she married Nathan Howard and moved to Lanark. She is survived by her husband and four daughters. Mrs. Bestsy Cartwright of Waupaca, Mrs. Mary Brown of Farmington, Mrs. Hattie Fenton of Lanark, Mrs. Laura Madgelund of Almond and one son, E. G. Smith of Lanark. The funeral will take place form the residence of Andy Fenton, Wednesday noon with interment in the Sheridan cemetery, Rev. W. S. Perry officiating. The pall bearers selected are Jessie Lea Jr., Richard Wilson, John Johnson, Chas Johnson, John McCabe and W. Mitcheltree."

 

1911, April - Obituary of Nathan Howard.  Stevens Point Weekly Journal - 1 Apr 1911

"The death of Nathan Howard occurred at the home of his daughter in the town of Lanark last Tuesday and was buried on Friday near the George Fleming school house. They settled at an early day in the town of Lanark, about five miles south of Amherst, and built a grist mill, known [as] the Nate Howard mill. He sold the mill a few years ago and went to live with his daughter, Mrs. E. J. Smith. The funeral was largely attended, nearly 50 team forming the procession to the cemetery."
