THE
LAMBS' FIRST HOMESTEAD IN FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP

The above picture is an aerial view of the Lamb Homestead south
of Franklin Centre. The time is spring circa 1980.
To the left and top beyond the picture boundary was the location
of the original log house in which John Lamb & Jane Akester
lived when they first became owners of this 100 acre farm.
Approximately 50 feet north of the old foundation there was a
very good spring with excellant drinking water. East of the
spring were several plum trees, a cluster of lilac bushes, and a
patch of orange lillies.
From the census it would appear that this house shown above was built between 1861 & 1871 resulting in the log house on the ridge behind becoming deserted & dismantled long before my memory. I remember the remains of only a shallow foundation. The frame house above was built in three stages as evidenced by the clapboards shown inside the structure: first the main front with a basement, then a kitchen with no basement, & finally a woodshed/summer kitchen also without a basement.
During my youth spring water was piped by two
lines; one to the barn, one to the house. It ran continuously
year-around in the kitchen, cattle stable, & milkhouse.
