SPECULATION: I deduce that James & Agnes came to Canada circa 1853, after their son John's birth but before their son Mathew's birth.

DEATH: Both James & Agnes are buried in the Huntingdon Cemetery, F. Cleyn St., Huntingdon, Quebec. Agnes was buried on 25 MY 1885. James' gravestone inscription reads ...75 yr. native of ...?..., Scotland. Agnes' gravestone inscription reads " ...66 yr. 5 mo. Native of Bothwell, Lincolnshire, Scotland.

05-23-1885  Agnes Muir,  wife of James Gilbert,  Farmer,  Hinchinbrook, died suddenly Aged 66 years 05 months. Deceased was a native of Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and came with her family to Canada in 1852.

08-06-1890  James Gilbert, farmer, died at Hinchinbrook Quebec, age 75 years.  A native of Lanarkshire, Scotland

Huntingdon St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church - 1885

Frame 263: Agnes Muir, wife if James Gilbert, farmer of the Township of Hinchinbrooke, County of Huntingdon, District of Beauharnois, Province of Quebec, and Dominion of Canada died 23 May 1885 and was buried 25 May 1885, aged 66 and 5 months by J. B. Muir, officiating minister, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church of Huntingdon. Witnesses: James Gilbert and Robert Gilbert. Note: The above was a native of Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland and came to Canada with her family in 1852. JBM

12-04-1932 Matthew Gilbert, died at Dewittville PQ, age 78 years.Mr. Gilbert was the fourth and youngest son of the late James Gilbert and Agnes Muir, who came from Scotland and pioneered on the farm where Mr. Gilbert died. He was able to speak, read and write the French language as well as the English language. After his home was destroyed by fire on Dec. 24, 1931, Mr. Gilbert went to reside with his nephew, Mr. James Lamb in Franklin Center until his new home was completed. He leaves to mourn the loss of a brother, also Miss. Margaret Gilbert of Huntingdon, and Mrs. Sam Lamb of Franklin. Funeral was held in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Huntingdon PQ, by Rev. J.B.Maclean, D.D.

02-22-1934 Margaret Gilbert, daughter of the late James Gilbert and his wife Agnes Muir, of Hinchinbrooke PQ, natives of Scotland, who came to Canada in 1851 and farmed in Hinchinbrooke, near Dewittville, died at the home of Mr. Robert Merson, Elgin Township PQ, age 76 years 06 months. Survived by seven children, Robert, Agnes, John, Archibald, Matthew, Margaret and Jessie, only surviving is Jessie, Mrs. Samuel Lamb of Franklin. Also five nieces and two nephews, three of the nieces are daughters of her brother Robert, being Margaret of Huntingdon, Jean, Mrs. Alex Rember of Ormstown PQ, and Mary of Montreal. The other two nieces are daughters of her sister, Mrs. Lamb, being Agnes, Mrs. Derek of Noyan, PQ, and Margaret, Mrs. Williams Sutton of Franklin PQ, three nephews, are sons of Mrs. Lamb, being James, presently on the Gilbert farm, in Hinchinbrooke, and Edwin and Clifford, both of Franklin. Funeral service was held at St. Andrew's Church in Huntingdon PQ,
