On Thursday about 121/2 p.m. the village was startled by the cry of fire and ringing of bells and word went out that Tyler Spencer's house near the depot was on fire. Our ever ready and willing fire laddies were early on the scene with the necessary apparatus to fight that dreaded enemy just as the fire was extinguished. The fire had caught in the wood shed and but little damage was done.

Vernon Spencer Dies in Ft. Wayne
NATIVE OF HERMON, FORMER CANTON RESIDENT
Vernon Spencer, a native of Hermon where he spent the most of his life, passed away in St. Joseph's Hospital, Ft. Wayne, Ind., Wednesday, where he had been a patient for the past month. He had gone to Ft. Wayne several months ago to take a position as a chemist in a defense plant and had continued there until his recent illness.
The body was brought to Hermon where funeral services were conducted at the Green Funeral Parlor, Saturday afternoon, at 1:30, the Rev. M. E. VanOrnum, pastor of the Hermon Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was made in Hermon Cemetery.
Mr. Spencer was a disabled veteran of the Spanish American War, and a member of the Veterans of the Spanish War and American Legion. His father was a veteran of the Civil War.
The Spencer family lived in Canton for some time fifty years ago, when Tyler Spencer was engaged here in one of the village shops for some time. They later removed to Hermon from which they originally had come.
Vernon Spencer was born Oct. 31, 1872, in Hermon, the son of Tyler and Amelia Grimshaw Spencer. He was educated in the local schools and the Canton village schools. About thirty years Ago he married a Miss Gore of Russell.
He had been quite active in military organizations and from time to time wrote interesting stories of experiences of Army life. He had a most interesting style and some of the articles he wrote from time to time for the Commercial Advertiser were little classics, which the editor was always glad to get, for they were something different and had a touch of magic in the way they were written
Last year he was for some weeks engaged as a chemist at Malone, but returned and later on went to Ft. Wayne, Ind. He learned while there through this paper that Sgt. John H. Fitzgerald, a member of the public relations office at Baer Field and the editor of the camp paper, The Beacon, was from St. Lawrence University. He hurried down to Baer Field, and was greatly disappointed to learn that Sergeant Fitzgerald had been transferred to a Florida station.
He recalled the days in Canton over fifty years ago, and exchanged memories with the editor of this paper of those days, when his father, Tyler Spencer, was among the cast in the thrilling war drama of the day, "Fritz Stein, The German Volunteer." His father was as the writer recalls, rather military looking with his heavy dark beard and wavy dark hair, a stocky man who swaggered across the stage with his shoulders thrown back and gave ringing orders in the battle scenes which were made quite realistic.
