Joseph went to Poultney VT and learned surveying. (He was in the first graduating class from the Troy Conference Academy, now Green Mountain College.) He laid out the road from Mason's Corner to Overton Corner and on into Canada (Rte. 276). In 1861, he bought the land his father and uncles had inherited from his grandfather for $200 each. He lived for a while on this road in Odelltown, the first three houses over the line in Quebec; three Odell houses in a row -- three brothers. He and Susanna then moved across the border to the old Elias Hamilton house in Champlain, NY in 1877, where their five children were born and raised. Susanna obtained the property including the old Elias Hamilton house from her father, probably in May 1877, three months before the birth of their oldest child, Emma.
