ELSWORTH 'VAN' LEWIS    CHATEAUGAY --Ellsworth "Van" Lewis, 81. died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 1997, at Alice Hyde Hospital, Malone.    Mr. Lewis was born Sept. 3, 1916, in Chateaugay, son of William and Minnie (Grimshaw) Lewis.  He was a life-long resident of Chateaugay and a 1937 graduate of Chateaugay High School. He was employed by the New York State Police and owned a farm. He also worked for ALCOA.    He was a heavy-equipment operator for the State Department of Transportation in Malone retiring in 1978.      He married the former Mildred O'Donnell Dec. 19, 1939, in the Burke Methodist Parsonage. Mr. Lewis was an avid musician. For many years, he played for several area bands. He belonged to the New York State Retired State Troopers.      Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Lewis of Malone and Gary and Debbie Lewis of Burke; two daughters, Donna Lewis of Chateaugay and Patsy Lewis of Bangor; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a brother, Allen Lewis of Long Island.   A sister, Mildred Morgan; a brother, Donald Lewis; and his wife, Mildred, died before him.    There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10a.m. at the Chateaugay Funeral Home with Rev. Eleanor Bellows officiating.     Burial will be in Burke Center Cemetery.   Donations may be made to the Chateaugay Rescue Squad.

Interesting Family Trivia

Elmer Grimshaw went to Keene in 1880.  His first wife came from PA.  They settled in Keene and raised 3 daughters. One daughter died young and the other 2 married and went back to PA.
