A SMASH-UP ON THE RUTLAND ROAD.

Trains on this division of the Rutland railroad were delayed Saturday by a smash-up which occurred near the Main street crossing at about eight o'clock in the morning. As good fortune would have it no one was injured, and the piling up of the cars was witnessed by quite a number of people. The passenger train from Ogdensburg had come and gone, and is followed by a long, heavy freight. This freight train was coming down the line at a lively rate, and at the same time the yard shifter was backing-westerly pulling a heavy train of cars loaded with pulp wood. Mr. Grimshaw was trying hard to make the siding, and in doing so was backing toward the oncoming freight, which usually stops up by the freight house. Instead of stopping, as usual, it came trundling along at a good clip and the shifter and freight engine embraced one another just west of the Main street crossing. Grimmy 's tender hopped up and when it came down there was a great hole in the water tank, but his engine and tender kept the track and his engine is in working order. The freight engine was a very heavy one and kept the track, losing its pilot and damaging the running gear. Three box cars next to it were badly wrecked. The first car was empty, the next was. loaded with flour and the last with lumber. The wrecking crew came from Malone and had the track passable by noon.
