"SPECULATION"

Zephaniah & Jerusha were born in New Hampshire. After their marriage in 1811, they moved to Vermont by 1812. Jerusha died & was buried in Vermont.

In about 1815, it would appear that Zephaniah Grimshaw moved to Clinton, Oneida County to be near a relative, Joseph Grimshaw, who lived in Trenton Twp, Oneida Co. While there he met Roxie. Supported by Bev's search from the Clinton County GenForum - "John Nelson Grimshaw was born 1817, Clinton, Oneida, NY to Zephaniah Grimshaw & Roxie".

Source:  http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?Roxie,Bev::ny/clinton::1210.html , 15 AP 2000.

Unfortunately, I believe that the similarity in names - Village of Clinton, Several Clinton Townships, & Clinton County - has caused some confusion. I no longer believe that Zeph ever went to Oneida County. I believe it was Mooers, Clinton County that he came to in 1815.

He met a woman by the name of Roxie at Mooers, Clinton County about 1815 shortly after his arrival. However, soon after, there were wife problems again with Roxie & she left Zeph or she died and was buried at Moores. Around 1820 he became romantically involved with his neightbour & brother-inlaw's wife, Asenath. He spirited Asenath (Noakes) away from her husband, James Hunter, when finally, he headed north to Canada in 1822 and settled in the Russeltown Corners area on the north edge of present day Havelock Township, Huntingdon County, Province of Quebec.

Tired of the low flat country of the Russeltown Area, north of Covey Hill, always flooding, Zeph moved again. This move was to his most lasting residence, about 40 years, as he took possession of the east half of Lot 47 (47b) on the first concession of Hinchinbrooke Township, Huntingdon County, Quebec in time for the Canadian Census of 1825. Note that this farm was one of several that was transferred to Franklin Township, Hinchinbrooke Region, when it was formed in 1857 from sections of Hemmingford & Hinchinbrooke Townships along with the western portions of Russeltown & Jamestown Regions of the Seigniory of Beauharnois. Presently the farm is owned by Henry Wilson and is bordered on the north by Blackwood Road and on the south by the Canada-US International border. It is the second lot west of Clinton Road

From the 1982 CVHS Annual, "Sometime in the 1840's, it appears that the Craiks built a gristmill on the Mitchell Brook, a little north of the road, on the present Henry Wilson farm, just over the Hinchinbrooke line. It was overhauled to an overshot mill in 1862, but seems to have faded from the scene shortly afterwards, being replaced by more convenient and superior grist mills." That mill was just west of Zeph's farm on the opposite or north side of the road. His nearest post office was at Frontier, NY, just one farm east of the south-east corner of his farm. This post office opened in 1842 and served both Canadians & Americans. Apparently, Frontier, NY had both a tannery & a brewery. The brewery, no doubt, motivated Zeph to grow a large crop of hops. Zephaniah and Asenath together had 9 or 11 children but were not churched during any of the births. Finally, Zephaniah and Asenath experienced a religious union in 1847 as shown by the marriage certificate below although it appears James Hunter, Asenath's first husband, was still alive.

Asenath became disillusioned with Zeph, possibly because of Mary, a woman, that was staying with them at the time. As a result, Asenath took Zephaniah Jr., Esther Mary & Harriet to Mount Forest, Egremont Township, Grey County, Ontario in 1855. Lonely Zeph met Ellen Sheahan, a newly arrived immigrant from Ireland, but she died from consumption in 1860 at the tender age of 22 or 23. Adeline Covey was available at this same time and kept Zeph company while producing five children together. No proof has ever been found that they were churched.  Zeph sold his farm in the former Hinchinbrooke Region of Franklin Township about the time of the closing of the grist mill across the road and before Asenath's death in 1863.  Perhaps he didn't like living in the new Township of Franklin because it appears that he sold his farm very shortly after its formation.  Zeph and Adeline must have left Canada between the 14 January 1861 Canadian census and the birth in the USA of their eldest child, Barbara, on 7 March 1861.

Following the sale of his farm, Zeph and Adeline moved to a tempory residence with Adeline in Clinton Township, Clinton County, N. Y.  On 30 January 1863 Zephaniah Grimshaw of Clinton, Clinton County, NY purchased 75 acres.  This property was part of lot 62, Township 6, Old Military Tract, Clinton County.  Zeph purchased it from William and Mary MacGregor for $244.80. This property was located at the north-west corner of Clinton Mills Road & Bull Run Road. A school was located right across the road on the north-east corner, making it easy for the young children to get to school.

On 5 February 1868, Zeph and Adeline jointly sold this property for $550 to J. M. Humphey and A. D. Boumhover.   It is unknown if the family continued to live in the house as rentors of went to live elsewhere such as in Clinton Mills or Churubusco.

Unfortunately, between 1 June 1870 and 2 April 1871 (Based on Canadian & USA Census) making it about year before Zeph's death in 1872, it appears that Zeph & Adeline ran into great difficulites. Some if not all of their children were placed with other families. This was family break-up, big time, with the children separated from both parents simultaneously. Barbara was placed with the Joseph and Debrah Longeway Family in Franklin Twp., Huntingdon County, Quebec.  Orison was placed with the William Brooks Family, also in Franklin Twp.  Henry was placed with the Robert & Maria Carson Family in Clinton Twp., Clinton County, NY.  Up to this point it has not been determined where Adeline, the second youngest child, Samuel, and the newborn of 19 August 1870, Daniel, went.  Ten years later, Adeline met an early death. She was not even 48 years old.

Daniel did resurface again in time for the 1901 Canadian Census.  He is shown as married with two children and living in Elgin Township, Huntingdon County, Quebec.

Were James Hunter and Jerusha Hunter brother & sister? What relation was Joseph Grimshaw to Zeph? Who was Roxie? When & did Zeph marry her? When did Zeph meet Ellen Sheahan and who was she? When did they marry? Who was Mary and what happened to her? It is unknown where or if Zephaniah & Adeline were married. Maybe they just lived common-law. Where are the graves of Zeph, James, Jerusha, Roxie, & Adeline? If you had one child named Elizabeth, why would you name another child by the same name 8 years later, especially if the first Elizabeth was still alive? What is the story on Adeline's first husband, Mr. Spearman? Is Ellen Sheahan & Ann the same person? The Hunter Family shown on the family chart below is very speculative!

BIRTHS: At this time there is no official documentation to show where Zephaniah, Jerusha, Asenath, James, Mr. Spearman, Roxie, Mary, Ellen or Adeline were born.

Quotes from the Chateaugay Valley Historical Society annual JOURNAL, Vol. 19, 1986 (ISSN 0319-1249):

Page 9:  "In 1822 Keyes and Hotchkiss got my father to clear half an acre where the store now is on the Flats and where they did business.  My father left and went to Ohio where he and two brothers died of fever.  My brother Thomas and I were hired to clear a spot for a shanty put up by Grimshaw on the lot where the Havelock Fair Grounds stands."

Page 10:   " The first store opposite the Russeltown church at the Flats was by Keyes and Hotchkiss who started about 1819.  Keys was drowned off a raft in Lake St. Peter.  John Forbes got the store about 1827.  He was a bad, drunken man, a native of Connecticut.  His wife was also American.  There was a large settlement of Americans on the Flats: Grimshaws, Allens, Huntingtons and others who moved west afterwards."

Note: The 1851 Census appears to show the William Brooks Family & Joseph & Deborah Longeway were living on Covey Hill Road in Franklin Township, Hemmingford Region quite close to the farm on which I grew up on - 2182 Covey Hill Road. This would be relatively close to the Clinton Mills Sideroad & of course Clinton Mills.
