1916 DEATH

CHILD'S HEAD BLOWN OFF

Little Boy is Killed by Older Brother

A terrible tragedy was enacted in the town of Clinton, near the village of Churubusco, Clinton county, last week when the six year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelias Covey, blew almost the entire head off his younger brother with a rifle, the brains of the little victim being scattered all over the room in which the shooting occurred.

Mr. and Mrs. Covey had left the house about 7 o'cloek and went to a nearby hayfield to gather a quantity of hay which had been cut the previous day. They left in the house their fifteen months old baby, Clinton Charles, aged four, the victim of the shooting, and his older brother, aged six. The parents had been away from the house for about half an hour when they heard the report of a rifle coming from the direction of their home, and fearing that some trouble had occurred they hastened to the house. They entered the dwelling through the kitchen and in that room there were no indications of the terrible sight which was to be met when they entered the sitting room adjoining.

Near the center of that room they saw the body of their four year old son lying on the floor with nearly half of his head blown off and his brains scattered around the room and on the walls. From the older son who was also in the room they learned the story of the tragedy. Soon after they had left the house to go to the hayfield the oldest of the boys took from the wall of the sitting room one of three guns which were hung together. He pointed the weapon at his brother, and without realizing what he was doing pulled the trigger.. There was a loud report and the victim fell to the floor dead.
