Early Settlers of the Aroostook River Valley
"The settlers of this sections
have been peculiarly situated - they are nearly insulated from the rest of the
community. They have not enjoyed the benefit of any legal magistracy, nor the
advantage of any internal intercourse, being surrounded by wilderness, except by
the circuitous course of the Aroostook. The connections of these people have
been necessarily with that river, where they have sought a market or conveyance
for their produce, and whence they have been obliged to derive their supplies.
" from a report by Charles H. Davis, Esq., 31
I'm interested in the earliest settlers of the Aroostook River Valley, 1820-1840. If you have information on any of these early settlers, please contact me - I'll be glad to exchange information with you. This isn't a complete list. I have more to add and I hope you will tell me of names that should be added. So far, I've tried to list those who arrived by 1830, with a few exceptions. I compiled this list of names from the Settlers' Lists at the Maine State Archives,Surveys by Joseph Norris, the 1830 Census, the Deane-Kavanagh Report of 1831, Survey by E. Holmes, Coffin's Journal. Many more came in the next few years and will be added later. I realize that not all of these people were "settlers". Some of them may have died soon after arriving and some of them undoubtedly moved on. I'm still trying to sort them out. If you have information about any of them, I'd like to hear from you.
