Dean Surname Y-DNA Project – results

Welcome to those researching the DEAN surname. The purpose of this project is to facilitate placing orders for Y-DNA test kits to be used by males surnamed Dean and to coordinate the results from those tests. Using these results may enable us to reinforce or disprove theories regarding our male DEAN ancestors. We also hope to build a Y-DNA database which will enable us to identify various DEAN ancestral lines. At present we have 116 subjects in the surname project: 33 with no matches and 18 groups with two or more matches. This makes 51 distinctly different genetic lines with the surname Dean or a variation of Dean - amazing!

If you have some knowledge of genealogy and want to learn about using DNA testing in genealogical research, I highly recommend the book Trace Your Roots with DNA by Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak and Ann Turner published in 2004 by Rodale Inc. This book will give you what you will need to know to use this new tool in genealogical research.

Recently the internet resource Geni hosted a four-part series: "DNA Testing for Genealogy -- Getting Started" written by CeCe Moore. She writes a blog: YourGeneticGenealogist.com. I thought they were really good articles - not too technical for most people interested in genealogy. And they contained what I thought was good advice for people thinking about doing DNA testing. If you are interested in ordering a Y-DNA test kit to be used by a male surnamed DEAN, go to the Family Tree DNA order form where you can order a Y-DNA test kit. If ordered through a surname project, Y-DNA test kits cost $49 for a 12-marker test, $124 for a 25-marker test, $149 for a 37-marker test, $238 for a 67-marker test and $339 for a 111-marker test. Plus a small shipping fee. Select the test you want to order and follow the instructions from there. As a default, I would recommend a 37-marker YDNA test, but there are circumstances that would justify fewer or more markers. Conclusions as of April 2012:

E haplogroup

Subjects 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E, 1H, 3C, 3Q, 4F and 5C. These YDNA results strongly indicate that these nine subjects share a recent common ancestor. Prior to these DNA tests, conventional genealogical research indicated that subjects 1B and 1D were descended from Samuel Dean (b. abt. 1751), and that Samuel's father was Richard Deane (b. 1701). Family historians were uncertain whether the earliest known ancestor of subjects 1C and 1H (John Dean, b. abt 1739), was a son of Richard Deane, but the DNA results strongly indicate that he was. Some family historians suspected that subject 1E's earliest known ancestor (Thomas Dean, b. 1779), was a grandson of Richard Deane and the DNA tests strongly indicate that he was. The connection of subject 4F to this group has yet to be confirmed by conventional genealogical research. Subjects 4T and 4Y. FTDNA has predicted that these two subjects belong to the E1b haplogroup. Based on the 23/25 match between these subjects, they share a recent common ancestor, but that ancestor appears to be before the conventional genealogy of either subject.

Subject 3Y. FTDNA has predicted that this subject belongs to the E1b haplogroup. Based on the multiple mismatches between this subject and the others in this haplogroup and the surname project, he does not share a recent common ancestor with any of the other subjects in the surname project.

I haplogroup

Subjects 1A, 1G and 1L. FTDNA has determined by SNP test that subject 1A belongs to haplogroup I2b1 and they have predicted that subjects 1G and 1L belong to the same haplogroup. Based on their 24/25 and 25/25 matches with each other they share a recent common ancestor, William Dean b. 1750-60 which confirms suspected conventional genealogy that George W. Dean and Caleb Dean were brothers. See The Family of George W. Dean (1786-1856) for more information on the family of George W. Dean. Subjects 1J, 2K, 2T, 3Z and 5E. FTDNA has predicted that these five subjects probably belong to the I1 haplogroup. Based on the 37/37 matches of subjects 2K and 2T and the 67/67 matches of subjects 1J and 3Z each pair is very closely related. Based on the 36/37 matches between the two pair they all share a recent common ancestor. Based on their pedigree charts the common ancestor of all four would be Benjamin Deen b. 1762. Subject 5E matches subjects 2K and 2T on 36/37 markers and subjects 1J and 3Z on 64/67 markers which are considered close matches, and he matches no one surnamed Howard in the FTDNA database, but he has no connection to the surname Dean known to the researchers of this subject.

Subjects 1T, 2E, 2F and 5F. FTDNA has predicted that these four subjects probably belong to the I1 haplogroup. Based on their 34/37 match with each other, subjects 1T and 2E share a recent common ancestor which is the earliest ancestor identified in the two pedigree charts. Based on their 35/37 match with each other, subjects 2E and 2F share a recent common ancestor which appears to be John Deen, b. abt. 1779 despite the change in surname in the next generation. Based on subject 5F matching subject 1T on 35/37 markers, subject 2E on 34/37 markers and subject 2F on 36/37 markers, he probably shares a recent common ancestor with the three of them, but conventional genealogy has not revealed who that common ancestor is.

Subjects 2A, 2Q and 3D. FTDNA has predicted that these three subjects probably belong to the I1 haplogroup. Based on the 37/37 match of subjects 2A and 2Q and their 36/37 match with 3D, they probably share a recent common ancestor. It appears from the pedigree information available that Frederick Dean, b. 1787, is probably the father of Peter and Lewis. The connection with subject 3D probably occurs earlier than the earliest known ancestor of subject 2A. Note that Shadrick J. Deen is the earliest known ancestor of both subject 3D and subject 2V but that there is a break in subject 2V's male line.

Subjects 2R and 4E. FTDNA has predicted that these two subjects probably belong to the I2b1 haplogroup. Based on the 11/12 match between them, they probably share a recent common ancestor although their conventional genealogy has not identified it.

Subjects 1X, 3J and 4W. FTDNA has predicted that these three subjects probably belong to the I2b1 haplogroup. Based on their mismatches with each other and with every subject in the surname project, they do not share a recent common ancestor with each other or with any of the other subjects in the surname project.

J Haplogroup

Subjects 1V, 1W and 5A. FTDNA has predicted that subjects 1V and 5A probably belong to the J2 haplogroup. FTDNA has determined by SNP tests that subject 1W is in the J2 haplogroup. Based on their mismatches with each other and with every other subject in the surname project, none of them shares a recent common ancestor with the others in the haplogroup or with any of the other subjects in the surname project.

R haplogroup

Subject 1S. FTDNA has determined by SNP test that this subject belongs to the R1a1a haplogroup. Based on his mismatches in DNA and conventional genealogy he probably does not share a recent common ancestor with any of the other subjects in the surname project.

Subject 1Q. FTDNA has determined by SNP test that this subject belongs to the R1b1 haplogroup. Based on his mismatches in DNA and conventional genealogy he probably does not share a recent common ancestor with any of the other subjects in the surname project.

Subjects 1O, 1P, 1R, 2B, 2D, 2O, 2V, 2W, 3G, 3I, 3N, 3R, 3V, 3W, 4I, 4M, 4N, 4R, 5D, 5J, 5K and 5L. FTDNA has determined by SNP test that subjects 3R, 4I and 5L belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup and has predicted that the remaining nineteen subjects probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup. They probably do not share a recent common ancestor with each other or any of the other subjects in the surname project. Subjects 1U, 3L, 3P, 3T and 3U. FTDNA has predicted that these five subjects probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup. Based on their 37/37 and 36/37 matches with each other, they share a recent common ancestor. Based on conventional genealogy, their earliest known ancestors were the well-known brothers, John and Walter Dean, of Taunton, MA. Some descendants of that John Dean are online at the Dean-Abbot Family on RootsWeb WorldConnect.

Subjects 1I, 2M, 2U, 2Y, 3E, 4D, 4G and 5I. FTDNA has determined by SNP test that subjects 2M, 2U and 3E belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup and has predicted that subjects 1I, 2Y, 4D and 4G probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup. The haplogroup of subject 5I is pending. Subjects 2U and 4D match 37/37. A recent common ancestor was suspected and the YDNA tests confirmed that. Subject 4G matches them 34/37 and, based on a shared mutation and their ancestry in England, probably shares a recent, but unidentified, common ancestor with them. Although the remaining five subjects in this group meet FTDNA's criteria for reporting matches, it does not appear that they share a common ancestor that can be identified. Subjects 1K, 1M, 2L, 2N, 2P, 2S, 2Z, 3A, 3F, 3O, 3S, 3X, 4A, 4P, 4S, 4U, 4X 4Z and 5H. FTDNA determined by SNP test that subject 3A belongs to the R1b1a2 haplogroup, and FTDNA has predicted that the other eighteen subjects probably belong to the R1b1b2 haplogroup. Based on the small number of mismatches of any of these subjects from the modal values for their group, all eighteen of the subjects in this group probably share a recent common ancestor, but only a few of the subjects have identified a common ancestor based on conventional genealogy. Subjects 1K, 1M, 2N, 3O, 3S and 4P share a mutation on marker DYS 444; and subjects 1K, 1M, 2N, 3S and 4P share a mutation on the very unusual 3-step mutation on DYS 617. In each case the shared mutations indicate a closer relationship between those subjects than between them and the other subjects in the group. In my opinion, the 3-step mutations observed on different markers in the YDNA of subjects 1K, 1M, 2N, 3A, 3S and 4P should be treated as a single mutation for the purpose of determining genetic distance. Subjects 2H and 2J. FTDNA has determined by SNP test that both these subject belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup. Based on the 36/37 match between them, they probably share a recent common ancestor, but that ancestor appears to be before the conventional genealogy known to either subject.

Subjects 1Y, 1Z, 2C, 2G, 2I, 3B, 3M, 4L and 5B. FTDNA has predicted that these nine subjects probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup. The 37/37 matches among subjects 1Y, 2C, 2I, 3M and 5B indicate a very recent common ancestor for the five of them. Conventional genealogy indicates their ancestry probably converges in the Edgefield District, SC. The 36/37 match between the five of them and subject 3B and the 35/37 match between the five of them and subject 1Z indicate mutations which occurred after subject 3B's and subject 1Z's line branched off. The 34/37 match between the five of them and subject 2G indicates the common ancestor between the five of them and subject 2G probably occurs further back in time. Conventional genealogy indicates this may have been in colonial Virginia. Seven subjects have now tested on 67 markers. Four subjects match 67/67, two have one mismatch on different markers and one has two mismatches on markers different from the others who have tested on 67 markers. These results continue to indicate a very recent common ancestor among the four of them.

Subjects 2X and 4B. FTDNA determined by SNP test that subject 2X belongs to the R1b1a2 haplogroup, and FTDNA has predicted that subject 4B probably belongs to the R1b1b2 haplogroup. The 37/37 match between them strongly indicates a recent common ancestor, but their conventional genealogy apparently does not extend back far enough to reveal the common ancestor.

Subjects 3K and 4C. FTDNA has predicted that these two subjects probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup. The 37/37 match between them strongly indicates a recent common ancestor who may be the Charles Dean at the head of the two pedigree charts.

Subjects 4J and 4K. FTDNA has predicted that these two subjects probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup. The 35/37 match between them indicates a recent common ancestor which verifies the family's conventional genealogy.

Subjects 1N and 4O. FTDNA has predicted that these two subjects probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup. Their 24/25 match confirms that they share a recent common ancestor, as indicated by their submitted pedigrees. Both subjects are descended from the well-researched Deans of Dorchester of colonial Maryland. There is a Deans of Dorchester web site online.

Subjects 3H and 4V. FTDNA has predicted that these two subjects probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup. These two subjects exhibit mismatches on markers 464e, 464f, Y-GATA-H4, CDYa and CDYb; five mismatches in 37 markers. This exceeds the four mismatches in 37 markers which FTDNA considers a maximum for reporting a match, but based on which markers are mismatched and their submitted pedigrees, it does appear that they share a common ancestor within the genealogical time frame.

Subjects 1F and 5G. FTDNA has predicted that these two subjects probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup. Based on their 37/37 match with each other, they share a common ancestor which the pedigree charts indicate is the William Dean/Deen who died in 1830 in Perry Co., IN.

T haplogroup

Subjects 4H and 4Q. FTDNA has predicted that these two subjects probably belong to the T haplogroup. Based on their mismatches with each other and others in the Dean surname project, they do not share a recent common ancestor with any subject in the surname project.
