The Return of Lulu-Belle
One
Sunday morning, around summer 1935, while on his way to church, Cyrus
LaBarge checked on his cow, Lulu-Belle. Lulu-Belle was a recent
addition to the family, having come from Pete Seney's farm on Crow
Hill, now known as Audubon Road. Cy took a peek in the barn.
Lulu-Belle was about to deliver her first calf but, at the time
he looked in on her, all was well.
Upon his return home, Cy once
again peeked in the barn door and to his surprise he saw a brand new
calf standing up and staring at him. The new mother was nowhere
to be seen -- she had jumped through an open window.
On a
hunch, Cy took a hike up to Seney's farm and sure enough found
Lulu-Belle at her old home. As luck happened, someone from the
village had a camera, so when Cy arrived at the LaBarge home with
Lulu-Belle, this picture was taken.
Lulu-Belle lived a happy life in the old yellow barn, supplying milk for the family for many years to come.
