The Schworm family immigrated to Buffalo, NY when Adam (John Adam Schworm) was a small child. Traveling by covered wagon they moved to Burlington, IA. In 1856 Adam settled permanently in Ottumwa, IA where he subsequently opened a general store, a saloon and a hotel. The Schworm General Store was a popular and successful business in Ottumwa until Adam's death in 1911. After their marriage, Adam and Victoria settled on the outskirts of eastern Ottumwa where they raised their family. Becoming good friends with the Indians who lived nearby, the family was often presented with gifts. When Adam became very ill, a group of Indians visited his home to give Victoria some squirrels to feed the sick man. The Indians, who greatly trusted the Schworms, revealed to them the location of their secret burial ground located in the forrest (per Louise Fletcher Knox,  their granddaughter, who maintained the secret throughout her life).
