Stone Face Rock
This landmark is located above Route 421, the road which leads from Harlan Co., Kentucky to Pennington Gap, VA. Standing sentinel just north of the town of Pennington Gap, VA is a striking rock formation. This prominent outcrop is a result of erosion by the North Fork of the Powell River as it flows over the horizontal layers of gray sandstone, which forms many cliffs and hogbacks along the top of Stone Mountain. This rock used to be called Nigger Head Rock and there was a night club across the road by the same name.
