Know ye, that Mark M. Morris, a 1st Lt of Captain Isaac T. Earl's Company A 57th Regiment of Indiana Infantry Volunteers who was enrolled on the 2nd day of August 1864 to serve three years or during the war, is hereby discharged from the service of the United States, this 14th day of December, 1863, at Victoria, Texas by reason of Special Order No. 234, his services being no longer required. No objection to his being re-enlisted is known to exist. Said Mark M. Morris was born in Henry Co. in the State of Indiana, is 24 years of age, five feet six inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, li ght hair, and by occupation when enrolled, a soldier."Military: MILITARY SERVICE Ind. 57th Infantry Regiment. Part of Company A consisted of Knightstown men. The 57th was mustered at Richmond, Indiana, November 18, 1861and moved to Indianapolis, December 10 . It went to Kentucky the same month, remained there until March when it reached Nashville. The regiment was in the second day's fight at Shiloh, April 7. It was actively employed in the siege of Corinth. Then it marched into Alabama, and reached Nashville in December, remaining there until September, when it joined the pursuit of Bragg in Kentucky and was in the battle of Chapin Hills or Perryville. During the Tennessee campaign, including tthe capture of Chattanooga and the battle of Chickamauga, the 57th was attached to Warner's brigade, operating on the north side of the Tennessee River opposite Chattanooga. The brigade crossed the river and occupied the town after its evacuation.
After the battle of Chickamauga, the Army of the Cumberland was reorganized and the 57th was assigned to Sheridan's division of the Fourth Corps. It participated in the winter campaign in East Tennessee in 1863-64 and had its full share of hardships. Most of the regiment re-enlisted January 1, 1864, and in March had veteran furloughs. The regiment was actively engaged at Rocky Face Ridge, near Dalton Georgia May 9; at Resaca, Adairsville, New Hope Church and Kennesa. It was employed at the battle of Nashville in December. Moving to Huntsville Alabama and thence to Nashville, it was transferred to Texas in July 1865; finally mustered out in the fall of 1865.
