102. Reuben HOSKINS (John HOSKINS , Thomas HOSKINSON , Thomas HOSKINSON , John , John ) was born about 1786/1787. He died on 9 Mar 1846. He was buried in Hoskins Cem #6, Bell County, Kentucky.

BIRTH: The date of birth for Reuben has been calculated from his first appearance on the Tax rolls of Knox County. He first appears on this list in 1808 and, assuming he reached age of majority in this year, yields a probable birth in 1786 or 1787.

SUIT FILED AGAINST THE HEIRS OF REUBEN HOSKINS - MAR 1850
The Commonwealth of Kentucky to the Sheriff of Harlan County. Greetings:
We Command you to summons Elisha Hoskins, John Hoskins, Martin Hoskins, William Hoskins, Rachel Hoskins, Margaret Hoskins, James Hoskins, Sarah Hoskins, Lucinda Hoskins and Nancy Hoskins to appear before the Judge of the Harlan Circuit Court at the Court house there of on the first day of our next April term to answer to a Bill of Chancery then and there to be exhibited against them by James K Hoskins and this they shall in recourse omit under the penalty of $100 and have then there this Court Witness John C Crump Clerk of our said Court this 5th day of March 1850 and in the 58th year of the Commonwealth
John C Crump, Clk

The document pertaining to this same court action which is hard to read, in which of what is readable, states these children are heirs of Ruben Hoskins. James K Hoskins is holding a note of debt on Ruben he is trying to collect. Ruben apparently is dead. At bottom of page the county clerk states Reuben's widow is Nancy Hoskins, the Court decided all the heirs have for payment of debt.

The copy of the Circuit Court case if very difficult to read in places but what it is that James K Hoskins was security on a note of Reuben's. James K had to pay the debt as security and as Reuben is now deceased, he is suing Reuben's children over the 50 acre tract on Yellow Creek that was Reuben's.
James K states that Reuben left the following children: Elisha, John, Martin, William, Rachel, Margaret, James, Sarah, Lucinda and Nancy. Deeds in Bell County over this land name Elisha (of Adams Co, OH), John, Martin,
William, Rachel & husband Joseph Shell, Margaret & James. Sarah, Lucinda & Nancy are not named in these deeds (both in book 2 page 274 & 275 ca 1873).
These three daughters may be deceased or be in separate deeds under their married names that have not been located. If Reuben had any other children living in 1850 or a widow still living they would also have been named in the suit so these are all the children who survived to 1850 and we also know that his wife died before 1850. From census and tax list info it is fairly certain that this Reuben was born about 1786, He died about 1846-7.

Reuben married Nancy Jane 1. Nancy was born in 1784/1794. She died on 25 Mar 1846.

According to Frances Dunham in Harlan Connections, Reuben' s wife's name was Jane. The grave marker is illegible for the given name but appears to begin with the letter M.

An 1805 Knox Co deed to John HAUSKINS was witnessed by Mary, John and Ezekiel HAUSKINS. These are believed to all be children of John Hoskins Sr. While this is less than absolute proof that Mary Hoskins was the daughter of John Hoskins Sr., it is perhaps the best available.

The death certificate of Mary's daughter Lucretia says that her mother was Mary Hoskins.

John and Rachel, his wife, HOSKINS to George HOSKINS 12 Jul 1825 for $150 – 50 acres on Brownies Creek Witnesses: Elisha GREEN & William TAYLOR

John married (1) Rachel. Rachel was born on 13 Jan 1788. She died on 17 Apr 1830 in , Knox County, Kentucky. She was buried in Clear Fork Cemetery, Bell County, Kentucky.

I believe it is Rachel Hoskins buried in the Clear Fork Cemetery with a birth date given as 13 Jan 1798 and death date of 30 Apr 1830. If this is her grave then there is a mistake on reading of the birth date from the marker which should more properly be 1788. Rachel was shown as 16-25 in the 1810 Knox Co. census or born 1785 - 1794.

John and Rachel had the following children:

+ 275 F i Ann C. HOSKINS
+ 276 F ii Sarah HOSKINS
+ 277 M iii Reuben HOSKINS
278 M iv Thomas HOSKINS was born about 1822 in , , Kentucky.

John married (2) Elizabeth SPRINKLES on 22 Jul 1836 in Knox County, Kentucky. Elizabeth was born about 1800/1806 in North Carolina.

BIRTH: Date from 1850 Harlan Co census - age given as 50

There is some considerable confusion on Elizabeth Sprinkles and her marriages. In 1836 she married John A. Hoskins in Knox County as the widow of John Arrington. They were listed in the 1850 Harlan County census. In 1853 she married Job B. Davis whom she later divorced. In the 1860 Knox County census Elizabeth is listed as Elizabeth Hoskins, head of household with her daughter, Martha Hoskins and granddaughter Charity Hoskins. There is a marriage record for Elizabeth Sprinkles and John Hoskins in Harlan County dated 1 Sep 1862. What is not clear is whether Elizabeth remarried to the same John Hoskins, who was not found in the 1860 census, or another John Hoskins.

John and Elizabeth had the following children:

+ 284 F x Martha HOSKINS

119. Josiah HOSKINS (HOSKINS , Thomas HOSKINSON , Thomas HOSKINSON , John , John ) was born about 1784 in , , Virginia. He died before 1860 in , Harlan County, Kentucky.

Levi HOSKINS to Josiah HOSKINS 21 Dec 1826 for $36.50 — 5 acres on Brownies Creek.

BIRTH: Josiah first appears on the 1805 Knox Co. tax rolls which would indicate a birth or 1784 or before.

BIRTH: Levi's age varies from census to census. The 1820 Harlan Co census lists his age as between 18-25 [1795-1802]. Subsequent census information indicates that he was born about 1794 to 1795. In the 1850 Knox Co census he states that he doesn't know where he was born. He makes the same claim in the 1860 Knox Co census. This is in part due to Tennessee not becoming a state until 1796, after his birth. The area of Tennessee that he was born in was ceded by North Carolina to the Federal Government in 1790 so it was no longer North Carolina when Levi was born and not yet Tennessee.

The inclusion of Josiah Hoskins as a son of Levi and Sarah Miracle Hoskins is based on circumstantial evidence. In the 1820 Harlan County census Levi was listed with 3 males under the age of 10. In the 1830 Harlan County census he was listed with two males over the age of 10. In the 1840 census, son James Hoskins was listed as 20-29 in Harlan County with another male of the same age also listed. I believe that other male was his brother, William Hoskins based on the fact that both James and William continued to live in Harlan County after their father, Levi moved to Barbourville in Knox County. In the 1840 Knox County census, Levi was listed with one male aged 20-29. This, I believe, was Josiah Hoskins.

Josiah Hoskins married Narcissa Coffman in Knox County in 1841. William Hoskins married Rachel Coffman, sister of Narcissa Coffman, in 1842. Nancy Hoskins married Saymore Coffman, brother of Narcissa and Rachel Coffman, also in 1842. As was common at the time, siblings of one family often married siblings of another family. It is my belief that Josiah, William and Nancy Hoskins were siblings who married Narcissa, Rachel and Saymore Coffman, all children of Daniel and Julia Catching Coffman.

Sometime in the early to mid 1840's, Daniel Coffman and his family left Knox County for Missouri. Josiah and Narcissa Coffman Hoskins were among those who went along. Josiah apparently had died prior to 3 Jan 1850 when Narcissa Hoskins was wed to Hampton Pennington in Andrew County, Missouri. Based on the fact that Josiah was not mentioned in the Will of Levi Hoskins, he apparently died childless. Levi made provisions in his will for the children of his daughter, Nancy Hoskins Coffman who also died in or on the way to Missouri.

295 F iv Nancy HOSKINS was born about 1821 in , Harlan County, Kentucky. She died before Oct 1863 in , , Missouri.

BIRTH: Nancy was born after 1819 and before 1823. In the 1840 Knox County Census she is listed as being between 15 and 20 years of age. Her older brother, William, was born in 1819. Her younger sister, Mary was born about 1823, based on given age of 27 in the 1850 Knox County Census.

DEATH: Nancy died before her father, Levi, wrote his will on 12 Oct 1863. In it he mentions the children of his daughter, Nancy Coffman, deceased. She and her husband, Saymore Coffman, left Kentucky for Missouri along with the rest of the Coffman family in the early 1840's. Nancy had probably died prior to 1846, in or on the way to Missouri as there is an indication that Saymore had remarried by that time.

301 F x Calvina HOSKINS was born about 1834 in , Harlan County, Kentucky.

Calvina presents something of a mystery at this time. She is living with her parents in the 1850 Knox County Census, age 16. In Levi's will of 12 Oct 1863, he mentions all of his known children except Calvina and Josiah.
