BASCOM FINLEY JONES 86, a retired Nashville Insurance executive and American Legion Leader, died yesterday 12 July 1983 in St Thomas Hospital, Nashville, Tennessee after an apparent heart attack. He was the father of Metro Councilman Elzie Jones. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at Calvary United Methodist Church, with the Revs James Beasley Jr and H T Tipps officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Jones home today and until noon tomorrow. Martin's & Bracey-Welsh is handling the arrangements. A native of Red Ash, Kentucky, Mr Jones was orphaned at the age of 2 and spent his early years at the Holston Orphanage in Greeneville, Tennessee. At the age of 19, he came to Nashville and enrolled in the Tennessee Industrial School, where he learned the printing trade and later worked as an instructor. In 1917, he enlisted in the Army and was sent to Europe during WW One. On his return in 1919, he married Mary White, who survives him, and went to work in the offices of the Nashville, Chattanooga & St Louis Railway, where he spent the next 13 years. In 1932, Mr Jones went to work as public relations representative for Tennessee Railroad Association and was named Executive Secretary of that organization in 1938. In 1955, he joined his Son in forming the Bascom & Elzie Jones Insurance Agency, where he worked until his retirement in 1969. Throughout his life, Mr Jones was active in many civic organizations, particularly the American Legion. He was a charter member of Nashville Post 5 of the American Legion and served as Post Commander in 1935-1936. He also served as District Commander in 1936-1937 and as National Vice Commander in 1944-1945. Also, Mr Jones served as Boys State Chariman from 1940-1947 and as President of the Nashville Community Chest in 1946. He served as President of the Exchange club in 1944 and as Chairman of the local Red Cross campaign in 1946. Survivors in addition to his wife and son, include two grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. He is my Great Grand Uncle. Submitted by: Sue Ann Morrow
