Picture, circa 1900, location unknown, probably in Kentucky. STANDING is JOHN BENJAMIN(E) CLARK (born in 1879 Laurel County, Kentucky, died 29 December 1967 in Jefferson County, Kentucky).
Man seated is unknown. The only clue is on his tie, the initial "N."
This Clark line has no surnames beginning with the letter "N." I hope someone can identify this man.
"Ben" is the son of JOHN B. CLARK and PERMELA/PERMELIA/AMELIA E. BURTON CLARK, Rockcastle & Laurel Counties, Kentucky.
Ben was a coal miner in his youth, fought in the Spanish American War and was a member of the Laurel County, Kentucky chapter of the Improved Order of Red Men.
Ben was a conductor for the L&N RR until he retired in 1950s. Ben married ELIZABETH ANN HUGHES in (New) Salem Baptist Church, Laurel County, Kentucky, April 1901. Elizabeth is the daughter of JOSEPH/JOHN HUGHES and JANE BAXTER HUGHES, Pittsburg, Kentucky. (Hughes and Baxter's were born in Wales and came to Kentucky ca 1880.)
Ben's father John B. Clark was born June 1848 in Virginia, died March 1901, Kentucky, and is listed in the 1880, 1890 & 1900 Kentucky census as a coal miner. Ben's mother Permela E. Burton (born 1851 Rockcastle County, Kentucky, died 1896, Kentucky) is the daughter of Jesse and Margaret Brooks Burton, Rockcastle County, Kentucky.
Ben's sisters married into the following families: Sailors/Salyers, Jeffrey, Atherton, Black.
