
ROBERT DANIEL NEWMAN served in the
Mexican-American War in 1847-1848. Robert D. Newman is born, supposedly in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pa., between August 18, and September 19, 1829 based upon his age as shown on military record. (No exact date available) May 13, 1846; The United States of American declares war on Mexico. Two
companies were raised and mustered into U.S. service from Shelby County.
Company H of the 3rd regiment of volunteers left for the front June 1846.
This group made up of approximately 45 Shelby County volunteers sustained
only a few minor injuries in the battle of Buena Vista. It served 1 year
and returned home in July 1847. Little is known of the second company
which was raised, but did not see combat. In January 1848, the "Treaty of
Guadeloupe Hidalgo" ended the conflict. Ref: Shelby County; "Indiana

The treaty turned a portion of the present day Southwest over to the United States. February 1848; Certification by Captain Samuel McKenzey of Company E, 5th Regiment, Indiana foot Volunteers, ie; "Robert Newman, Corporal, 5 foot 6 inches high, light complexion, blue eyes, dark hair and by occupation a tailor, was mustered into service of the United States at Madison, Indiana on October 1st, 1847." Regiment of Indiana foot volunteers, is incapable of performing the duties
of a volunteer soldier for the following reasons; while actually engaged in
service, he contacted "rheumatism" in his right leg and thigh which has
eventuated in emaciation and rigidity of the muscles impeding entirely
locomotion." February 21, 1848; Robert D. Newman is discharged February 21, 1848 as Corporal at Mexico Del Rey, Mexico with Service Connected Disability at age 19. February 23, 1848; Robert Newman, Honorably Discharged February 23, 1848 at Camp Melino Del Rey by order of Major General Butler. Signed by J.H. Lane, Col. Earick, Justice of the Peace, State of Kentucky, Jefferson County to certify, ie; "He is actually the Robert Newman that had served in the Mexican War and
eligible to receive land for service rendered." May 3, 1848; Robert D. Newman receives Certificate # 23.193 for Bounty Land of 160 acres, Warrant # 14.389 issued in Louisville, Kentucky by authority of the Bounty Land Act, enacted February 11, 1847. July 28, 1848; Robert D. Newman, Corporal, Company E, 5th Regiment, Indiana Infantry, age 19, is shown on the Company Muster-out Roll dated Madison, Indiana, July 28, 1848; under Remarks: "Discharged on Surgeons certificate for disability at the City of Mexico, February 21st, 1848." August 7, 1848; Robert D. Newman marries a Nancy Ann Sparks, age 18, in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Indiana by her grandfather Amos Sparks, m Gospel. Ref: Marriage Certificate August 19, 1850: Census of Shelby County, Addison Township, Indiana., page 349 shows a Robert Newman, age 20, Tailor, born Penn; wife Nancy, age 21, born Ohio. June 10, 1867; Robert D. Newman divorces Nancy Ann (Sparks) Newman. Divorced: June 10, 1867. Court of Common Pleas of Marion County, Indiana, Book 22, page 161, Case # 3019. June 12, 1967; Robert D. Newman marries a Lezane Newby on June 12, 1967. They are joined in marriage by a Justice of Peace in Marion County,
Indiana. Ref: Marion County MR, Book 9, page 659. July 29, 1870; Census of Boone County, Eagle Township, Indiana shows a R. B. Newman, age 42, farmer, born Penn; wife Lezana, age 35, born Indiana ?; dau Lurena B. Newman, age 2; dau Effie L. Newman, age 10 months, born in September. There is a Mary Newby, age 8 also living with them. November 20, 1878; Robert Daniel Newman dies in Wabash County, Indiana(?) according to Nancy Ann Newman in her "Claim of Widow for Service Pension." This is attested to by two of his past comrades, James L. Capp, age 58 and Francis Simms, age 56, both of Shelby County, who claimed they attended his funeral. Submitted by: James A.
