Robert (de Bellomont) "Blanchmaine" of Leicester de BEAUMONT. He took part in the conspiracy formed in the 19th year of the reign of Henry II, to depose that king and replace him with his son, Prince Henry. He ordered his vassels to join the confederates and he accompanied the Prince and the Earl of Flanders to the coast in support of the insurrection. His vassals and the confederate forces fortified the town and castle of Leicester, but before they had time to take the field, Richard de Lacy collected forces which marched against and totally dispersed the confederates, then ordered a general assault on Leicester. Later the Earl, with his troops went to Suffolk. He made himself master of the castle of Framlingham. His army then marched toward the center of the kingdom, being encountered at Farnham by de Lacy and his forces. After a short but bloody contest the Earl's troops were dispersed. The Earl and several noblemen were taken captive and sent to Normandy by order of King Henry II. The Earl was imprisoned and all his possessions were confiscated. After peace had been established between King Henry and the confederates, the Earl still remained in confinement in Normandy and England until January, 1177, when all his possessions were restored except the castle and lands of Mountsorel in Leicestershire and the castle of Pacy in Normandy. In 1190, the Earl made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land where he died on his passage in the Mediterranean. With his marriage to Petronilla, he acquired her whole estate and honors and succeeded to the Great Stewardship.
