    I guess these aren't really stories, but superstitions handed down by my Grandmother, Nellie Vaughn Ballard who told me these all my life. The ones I remember most are:

    (1) if a bird flies in your house there will soon be a death in the family.

    (2) That deaths always come in threes.

    (3) If the palm of your hand itches, you will soon be given money.

    (4) If three people take their picture together, the one in the middle will die first.

    (5) Opening an umbrella in the house will bring you bad luck.

    (6) If you break a mirror you will have seven years bad luck.

    (7) A baby should not see their reflection until they are over a year old.

    (8) If your nose itches you're going to have company.

    (9) A rabbits foots is a good luck charm.

    (10) Do not leave a rocking chair empty when it's rocking or you will invite evil to enter your home.

    (11) Cover your mouth when you sneeze or your soul can escape.

    (12) If you wish upon the first star you spot your wish will come true.

    (13) If you bite your tongue you have told a lie previously.

    (14) If you have white spots on your fingernails it means you've told a lie.

    (15) knock 3 times on wood for good luck

    (16) If you make a wish, then tell anyone, it won't come true.

    (17) getting the wishbone from the turkey and breaking it in half, the one who gets the longest half and makes a wish it will come true.

    (18) If you dream of death, there will be a birth.

    (19) If you dream of a birth there will be a death.

    (20) An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

    (21) If your ear is burning, someone is talking about you.

    (22) If you eat a bowl of black eyed peas on January 1st you will have good luck the entire year.

    (23) See a penny pick it up, all the day you'll have good luck, unless the penny is face down, don't touch it!

    (24) If you leave your home, forget something and have to return, you must sit down and count to ten before leaving again.

    (25) Never give an empty wallet or purse, always place a coin in it first to bring them good luck.

    (26) You must get out of bed on the same side you got in or you will have bad luck.

    (27) When you hear a bell ring, an angel has received their wings.

    (28) If someone is sweeping the floor and sweeps under your feet, you will never get married.

    (29) Keep all cats away from babies. They suck their breath away.

    (30) A four leaf clover is good luck.
