The Freeloves in America have been my focus, but Mrs Kay Hitchens of Wales has been studying the Freeloves in the British Isles and has established herself as the authority on Freeloves on that side of the pond. She is currently doing a one-name study on the surname.

MORRIS FREELOVE [Frelon] appears to have arrived in America at least by 1671 [then about 18 years of age] as evidenced by the following reference: "It is ordered, that Joseph Torrey, Jrn'r, and Morris Freelon, are ordered to be paid out of the Generall Treasurey the sum of sevn pounds, towards their cure and loss of time." (From, "Records of the Colony of Rhode Island, Rhode Island Colonial Records, 1664-1677", Vol 2). Morris died between Jun 1740 and Jan 1742/43. His will was dated 10 Jun 1740 and was proved on 19 Apr 1743 in Bristol Co, MA. In the will, he named wife Elizabeth, son-in-law Capt. Morris Freelove married ELIZABETH WILBORE on 9 Feb 1681 ("Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England", Vol II, Savage). Elizabeth was born probably 1660-1665, daughter of Samuel and Hannah Wilbore. She died, probably in RI, after Oct 1745 when she was called "my aged mother" in the will of daughter Rebecca.

On 6 Nov 1750, John Burrington of Portsmouth, RI, administrator of Samuel Freelove's will in Mar 1751, was made guardian of Samuel and Joseph Freelove, both under 14, sons of Samuel Freelove of Freetown, MA.

  1. THOMAS FREELOVE, born 1681-1685, died 5 Jan 1738/39 in Freetown, Bristol Co, MA. Thomas died intestate, owning no real estate, only personal property. For this reason, his wife, whose name is unknown, had no dower rights in any land. Her name may have been Mary. One Mary Freelove made "marriage intentions" with Robert Harlow on 19 Mar 1738/39, three months after Thomas' death. It appears that Thomas and his wife lived on his father's property. Administration papers were filed 19 Jun 1739 on his estate. From "Massachusetts Town, Probate, and Vital Records": Appointment of Amos Snel Jr of Bridgewater, Co. of Plimouth, Yeoman, to be Administrator of estate of Thomas Freelove of Freetown, "at the request of the widdow and children," dated 19 Jun 1739.

Thomas Freelove's children were:

  1. ABIGAIL FREELOVE, born 16 Jul 1740, Freetown, Bristol Co, MA, married in 1760, EBENEZER WHITMAN who was born 1736 in MA. They lived in Bridgewater, MA. I think they had a daughter named THANKFUL FREELOVE, born about 1752. Abigail died 1 Mar 1786. Ebenezer died 11 Feb 1786.

  1. JOHN FREELOVE, born 14 Feb 1740/41, Freetown, Bristol Co, MA, died after 1820 in Pittsford, Rutland Co, VT, married (1) SARAH FULLER on 24 Jan 1765, married (2) BETHIA EMONS on 25 May 1810 in Pittsford, Rutland Co, VT. John Freelove served in the Revolutionary War as a private from Easton in the same company with brothers-in-law Isaac and Isaiah Fuller. Sarah's brother Isaac and his son Benjamin Fuller (b 1754, d 1817 in Winchester, NH), went to Winchester, NH, in 1787 and John Freelove's name appears in Cheshire Co, NH, 1790 (p28), 3 males 16+, 1 female. In 1800 John is shown in Winchester, Cheshire Co, NH (#339), 1 male 45+, 1 female 45+. His name appears in the census for 1820 in Pittsford, Rutland Co, VT. I think he probably died between 1820 and 1830. SARAH FULLER was a descendant of the Mayflower passenger, Samuel Fuller. From "Mayflower Families Through Five Generations, Vol I, The Samuel Fuller Family", pp85-88: "Isaac FULLER (Isaac 3, Samuel 2-1), b Middleboro 24 Sept. 1712; may have rem. with one of this children to Warwick, MA or Winchester, NH and d. there. He m. in Bridgewater (MA) 9 Nov. 1737 Sarah PACKARD, b. there 23 May 1719; dau. of Solomon and Susanna (KINGMAN) PACKARD, a desc. of Francis COOK." According to this book, their daughter Sarah was born 23 Mar 1746, and died before Jan 1774. "History of North Bridgewater", p507-508, shows the family of Isaac Fuller and states Sarah was b 22 Mar 1746. This book also states that Isaac Fuller "removed from Halifax to North Bridgewater about 1736".

John Freelove's children:
  1. SARAH FREELOVE, born ca 1765.

  1. JOHN FREELOVE [Jr], born ca 1772, MA, died 1850-1860, probably Bradford Co, PA. John married (1) RHODA COOK on 3 Mar 1799 in Brandon, Windham Co, VT. Rhoda died in her 48th year and is buried in Lincoln Cemetery, Castleton, VT. John Freelove married (2) MARTHA AVERY on 17 Jun 1843 in Bradford Co, PA (from a newspaper record, Bradford Co). In the 1850 census, Martha Freelove is listed in Troy Township, Bradford Co, PA, age 73, born in VT, living with the Hart family of ____ Hart, age 53, Betsey Hart, age 47, Benj., and Helan, and Sibelia Smith, age 33. John was called John Freelove Jr in the 1810 census, New Haven, Addison Co, VT. John enlisted during the War of 1812. "Roster of War of 1812, Herbert T. Johnson, Adjutant General", 1933, p169: Freelove, John Jr, served Apr 12, 1814 to Apr 21, 1814, in Capt Othniel Jewett's Company, Sumner's Regiment, Vermont Militia, verified by War Dept records. John Freelove was "warned out of town" in Bristol, Addison Co, VT, on 6 Jan 1803. In 1835, John gave power of attorney to John W. Freelove to sell his land in Addison Co, VT. John appears in the 1840 census in Troy Township, Bradford Co, PA. John (Jr) left VT about 1835 and was probably deceased by 1860. John W. Freelove was in Bradford Co, PA, by about 1845. A deed for 56.5 acres in Racine Co, WI, was recorded for John Freelove on 10 Dec 1840. John Freelove appeared in the 1860 census in Racine, WI. John Freelove's children are unproven. Because LARNARD FREELOVE and JOHN W. FREELOVE appeared in Bradford Co, PA, along with the elder John Freelove, it is believed they were his sons.

Children of John Freelove:
  1. LARNARD FREELOVE?, born ca 1804, VT.
  2. JOHN W. FREELOVE?, born ca 1806 in VT (1850 census, Bradford Co, PA). He sold land in 1845 in Bradford Co to Larnard Freelove. Larnard and Mary migrated from VT (family legend says Poultney) to Bradford Co, PA by oxteam in the mid-1800's, settling at East Troy, on 100 acres purchased in 1845 from JOHN W. FREELOVE. John first appeared in the 1850 census; Larnard appeared in the 1860 census, born VT, 56 yrs old . Mary appears in 1880 living with their son Almond. Larnard's 100 acres was located between Mudcreek Rd in East Troy and the Troy-Canton Rd, along Beaverdale Road. Buildings are long gone, but the land is still referred to as the "Freelove lot".
