Malcolm Cemetery & St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church
12 St. Patrick's Drive, Nelson-Miramichi, Northumberland County, New Brunswick
 |
Malcolm Cemetery is located next to St. Patrick's Catholic Church, on St. Patrick's Drive, in Nelson-Miramichi. The picture on the left was taken on a very rainy day in about 1998. Below is a view of the church from the river (I was on a boat near Beaubear's Island) taken in the summer of 2003. You can see a few of the taller monuments in the cemetery to the right of the church.
A plaque to the left of the front entry details a bit of the history of the church. It reads as follows:
On this land, donated by John Malcolm, a modest wood structure known as Malcolm's Chapel was built in 1796 to serve the spiritual needs of the Catholics of Upper Miramichi.
The chapel was blessed by Missionary Father Huot in 1811 and dedicated to St. Patrick.
Malcolm's Chapel was replaced in 1826 by a church 60' x 40' x 24' which burned September 25, 1883.
The present St. Patrick's Church was completed, blessed and dedicated by James Rogers, D.D., Bishop of Chatham, on November 8, 1894.
Would I had the gift of song That to a greater mind belong Then fitting I in every line Would praise dear old St. Patrick's Shrine John H. Wallace 186? - 1953

This is the largest cemetery transcription project I have undertaken to date. And the data entry is done! While it would be possible to format the data in the same way as the other cemeteries on this site, it would take quite some time, and lead to a very large webpage - there are 879 gravestones, for 1594 people, in the transcription! So, I have decided to post the information in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. As time goes by, most users of the Internet are becoming more comfortable with various types of files, so I hope this works for everyone. If you cannot open the file, you can download a viewer for it here: MS Excel viewer. As an absolute last resort, e-mail me and I will see what I can do.
Download the Malcolm Cemetery transcription here: malcolm.xls.
