Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church
760 Howard Road, Howard, Northumberland County, New Brunswick
This cemetery is located at the oldest Roman Catholic Church in continuous use in the Diocese of Saint John. We were there on a beautiful summer day in 2004. My grandmother was well that year and came with my mother and me on our meanderings upriver, the whole time telling us stories about people sadly long gone. There is one story she remembered from her early days, passed down even though the people involved had been dead over 50 years before she had been born.
I came upon a large headstone, laid flat on the ground, surrounded by an iron rail. I could barely make out the name to be Hogan. Nan told us how the Hogans had come from Ireland, and had a large family once they settled on the Miramichi. One day in the 1850's, the parents, William and Mary, had gone out in the wagon and were crossing the river at the Forks, at Howard. They loaded onto the ferry, but after it had pulled away from shore, the horses spooked and bolted, dragging the wagon into the river. William and Mary were entangled and both drowned, leaving behind a family of ten children. In the 1851 census, the children were all still living at home, the oldest age 28 and the youngest only 6 years old.
The headstone is broken and quite worn, but I have it mostly transcribed. If anyone would like to take a stab at filling in the blanks, please e-mail. There's a high-res picture if you like, just click on the photo to the right.

Family of William and Mary Hogan:
William Hogan was born December 25, 1799. He married Mary Thompson, who was born February 12, 1804, on September 14, 1822. They died August 10, 1852. This information is all from their headstone. According to the 1851 Census, they came to New Brunswick separately, William first in June 1819 and Mary in June 1822, so this puts their marriage in New Brunswick. However, according to the same census, their first child, Bartholomew, was born about 1823 in Ireland, and came to New Brunswick in in June 1826. It is possible that this information is incorrect, and that he was actually born in New Brunswick, or perhaps he was adopted. All the other children were listed as having been born in New Brunswick. William and Mary had ten surviving children listed on the 1851 census.
