La famille Verge était originaire de Christchurch, Hampshire, en Angleterre. Elle fût au nombre de ces puritains qui quittèrent le Royaume-Uni vers la fin du dix septième siècle pour venir dans le Massachusetts chercher la liberté qui leur échappait dans la mère-patrie. Après le traité de 1783, par lequel fût reconnue l'indépendance des Etats-Unis, les Verge, ainsi que plusieurs autres familles loyalistes restées fidèles à l'allégeance britannique, émigrèrent au Canada, ou flottait encore l'ancien drapeau. Les Verge s'établirent à Chester, Nouvelle-Ecosse. Plus tard, Monsieur Nelson Verge vint se fixer à Carleton avec ses enfants. Il s'y convertiet au catholicisme et son fils, le Docteur Charles Verge, plus tard professeur à la faculté de médecine de l'université Laval, eut l'insigne et rare bonheur d'assister au baptême de son père.

Aided by several online translation tools, I think I've fairly accurately got the meaning.

The Verge family were natives of Christchurch, Hampshire, in England. The family was among the Puritans who left the United Kingdom towards the end of the seventeenth century to come to Massachusetts to look for the freedom which escaped them in the motherland. After the treaty of 1783, which recognized the independence of the United States, the Verge family, like other Loyalist families who retained their British allegience, emigrated to Canada, where still floated the old flag. They established themselves in Chester, Nova Scotia. Later, Mr. Nelson Verge settled in Carleton with his children. He converted to Catholicism and his son, Dr. Charles Verge, later a professor in the Faculty of Medicine at Laval University, had the honour and rare happiness to witness the baptism of his father.

So how does this fit in with my Verge family? Nelson Verge (AKA Joseph Nelson Verge) was the son of John Verge and Eunice Whitcomb Millet. John Verge, born 2 Jan 1781 in Liverpool, was the son of Joseph Verge and Abigail Doggett (see scan of page from Liverpool Town Book). My Verge line comes from Samuel Verge, another son of Joseph and Abigail.
