ZADOCK REED (Zadoc/Zadok - Read)
Litchfield, Hillsboro, NH 1752- 1827 NH
Private New Hampshire line
Army of the United States during the Revolutionary War

& Lucy McLean/McLain
1750 Hillsborough, NH-1840

Parents of Dudley Reed

Zadock Reed was born August 25, 1751 in Litchfield, Hillsboro, NH. (1) His parents were Col. William Read and Lucy Spaulding.  There documentation about his birth being in CT, however the documentation from New Hampshire verifies her was born there. The MA Town Birth record says Oct 1 1752 though this is likely his Baptism date (2).  Zadock appears to be the oldest of at least six children born to William and Lucy Reed/Read.  Both Lucy and William had been born in Chelmsford, MA.  They were actually 3rd cousins descended from Edward (Spalden) Spaulding [1596-1690] and Margaret (Margaret Elyot) Elliott [~1613-1640] who married in Redenhall, Norfolk, England but had immigrated to the English Colonies sometime before the birth of their son John Spaulding on November 16, 1633 in Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts.  John was the great Grandson of William Reed.  Edward and Margaret's youngest son Andrew was born November 19, 1652.  According to the Spalding web page at search roots, Andrew was Zadock's youngest son, but received the paternal home by bequest. He was a deacon.  Andrew Spaulding was Lucy Spaulding's Great Grandfather.(3)

The book History of the Reed Family indicates,

William Read married Lucy Spalding, of Merrimac, NH. Mr. Reed settled, when young, in Litchfield, NH on what was at that time the frontier, and then to the northern border of ancient Dunstable.  He was a noted bear-hunter. He was an ensign in Col. Gilman's regiment in 1755 and was commissioned as a captain soon after. He had just received a colonel's commission at the time of his decease. He established a ferry between Litchfield and Merrimac, about 1728, known as "Read's Ferry." He died 1768, being killed at the raising of a building. In 1789, the legislature made a grant of a ferry to his son, William Read.  The three daughters of William and Lucy lived to be about ninety years each. [ (4) p 172]

This book also documents the Reed family line from Esdras Reed of Boston, MA in the 1600's down through Zadock's son,  Dudley, my 4th Great Grandfather.

Zadock married Lucy (McLain) McLean from New Boston, Hillsboro, NH sometime about 1770.  We have located 4 children from Zadock and Lucy and the eldest was Francis born 1770 per NH Town Birth Records.  The Families of Antrim book indicated that Francis was a Sailor and that he died at sea.  The second child of Zadock and Lucy was Susannah born 1774 who married Samuel Sawyer of Hampstead, Rockingham, New Hampshire on December 29, 1794.  The third child was Sally Reed born 1776 and married Samuel Wilson.  The forth and last child mentioned in the Antrim Families book is Dudley [(5) p. 657].   According to the 1860 NY census (7) Dudley would have been born about 1791.  There likely was at least one other daughter since the 1820 census shows a white female age 16-26 living with Zadock and Lucy (8) and he states that in his Revolutionary War documents of July 11, 1820 that he had a daughter living with him that was able to contribute to her own support.[(10)  document 9]

1895 Hillsboro Map

Antrim Families goes on to state:

Zadok Reed, son of William and Lucy (Spaulding) Reed, whose ancestors were of English descent, and came from Westford, Mass., was born  in Litchfield in 1752.  His father was killed while raising a building only eight feet square, but the son served through the whole seven years of the Revolutionary War without receiving a scratch.  He married Lucy McLane of New Boston, and lived in that town some years, but came here (Antrim, NH) in 1795, following his daughter, Mrs. Sawyer, who had settled here the year previous.  He lived a while on the Abraham Smith farm, and moved on to the Clark farm with his son in law, Samuel Sawyer, and died in 1827.[(5) p. 657]

According to the Revolutionary War Rolls, Vol. II for the State of New Hampshire in 1778 on page 435 a list of absentees from the First New Hampshire Regiment Commanded by Colonel Joseph Cilly Valley Forge January ye 10th 1778 lists Zadock Reed belonging to the company of Capt Morrill residing in New Boston as having been sick.  Demographics given on him state that he was 23 years old, stood 6 foot 2 inches tall, had a light complexion, dark hair and gray eyes and left Albany on account of sickness. [(6) p 434]

Zadock enlisted into the Revolutionary War in March 1776 as a Private Soldier, into the Captain Morrill's company in Col. Gilley's Regiment in the New Hampshire line in the Continental services. He likely had his three children Francis, Susannah and Sally by that time.  Zadock goes on to state:

"I, Zadock Reed of Antrim in the County of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire and formerly of New Boston in said County, Hillsborough, depose, that in the Spring of _:1776 Enlisted as a Private Soldier, into the Captain Marriots company in Col. Gilley’s Regiment in the New Hampshire line in the Continental services. [(added) the then Col. Stanks and afterwards] by there serviced against the common enemy till the expiration of one year when I re-enlisted into the same regiment and continued in said services till after the peace when I was honorably discharged, have since last my certificate of it." [(10) doc 5]

He went on to state that he was discharged from Newburgh in New York in a statement made April 9th 1818 when he filed for Invalid papers at the age of 66.

Zadock appears in the 1800 census for Antrim, Hillsborough, New Hampshire stating that he has a listing of
1 white male under 10 (likely Dudley Reed), 2 white males 10-15, 1 white male 26-44 (likely Francis),1 white male 45+ (Zadock), 1 white female under 10, 1 white female 10-15, 1 white female 16-25, 1 white female 45+ (
Lucy). (9) (Susannah and Sally Reed would have already been married by 1800).

In this census Zadock lives close to a man named John McAllister.  It is interesting to note that Zadock's son Dudley Reed  must have known John's daughter Anna each other as neighbors.  Dudley and Anna would marry in 1813 in Antrim, Hillsborough [(5) p 657]. This is the line that follows down to our ancestry line.

On April 9, 1818 Zadock applied to receive a pension as an Invalid.  This appears to be in response to the Revolutionary Claim Act 18th March 1818.

There is a document that verifies Zadock's appearance in court:

"State of New Hampshire

A later document in the Revolutionary War files indicate Zadock did receive payment in September 1818:

By the 1820 census Zadock is living next to his son Dudley Reed and 5 houses away is listed a Sarah Sawyer though again it is unclear if this is any relation to Zadock.  Zadock's son in law Samuel Wilson's family was living 2 houses away and so the family was staying quite close. Dudley has 2 males under age 10, 1 white male age 26-45, 2 white females under age 10, 1 white female 26-45 and 1 person engaged in Agriculture.
Zadock has 1 free white male age 16-18 living with him, 1 white male age 45+, 1 white female age 16-26, 1 white female age 45+ and 1 person engaged in Agriculture.  The record below indicates that he had a daughter living with him in 1820 that was helping support herself in his family
. (8)

In the Revolutionary War Document file on July 11, 1820 Zadock swore to the court::

Hillsborough in State of New Hampshire on this 11th day of July AD 1820 approved before the honorable Joshua Darling Judge in (+ J K Smith) open court of Common Pleas in the County of Hillsborough being a Court Record, in a for the said County having the power of fine and imprisonment, Zadock Reed aged (68) sixty eight years, resident in Antrim in said county, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War as follows:

That he enlisted in March 1776 in Capt. ___Morrille Company in Colonel John Stark's Regiment in the New Hampshire line and served until the fall of this year then he enlisted in the same company for three years during the war and served in a foresaid service until the close of the war and was honorably discharged at Newburgh in New York.

The date of my original declaration in order to obtain a pension is the 9th day of April 1818.  The number of my pension is 4107.  I have received a pension.  And I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818; and that I have not, since that time, by gift, sale, or in any manner disposed of my property, or any part of thereof, with intent there by so to diminish it, as to bring myself within the provisions of an Act of Congress, entitled An Act to Provide for certain persons engaged in the land and Naval Services of the United States, in the Revolutionary War passed on the 18th day of March, 1818; and that I have not, nor has any person in trust for me, any property of securities, contracts or debts, due to me; nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule here to annexed, and by me subscribed.   My occupation is that of a laborer and am not of sufficient ability to pursue it by reason of ill health and a broken shoulder and in consequence of which am not now and probably shall never be able to labor at all.

In family residing with me a wife aged (68) sixty eight years and being infirm and Daughter able to contribute something towards her own support.

Sworn to and declared at Antrim in said county of the 7th day of July AS 1820 before his Hon. Joshua Darling [(10)  document 9]

It appears as though Zadock was unable to attend some court proceedings due to his health:

Schedule
Containing the whole estate and income of Zadock Reed (his necessary clothing and bedding excepted) by him subscribed, exhibited to the court of Common Pleas for the County of Hillsborough in the State of New Hampshire on the 11th day of July 1820, an annexed to his oath.
No Property of any kind
Zadock Reed

       Joshua Darling
 _____ Clark  [(10) Doc 8]

In another Pension record he indicated in 1820 that he had a wife age 65 and a daughter but he did not state their names.

The Revolutionary War Documents from Heritage Quest Online indicate that Zadock died 1827 in New Hampshire and this corresponds to the information in Families of Antrim.  The Antrim book says he lived on the 'Clark farm' with his son in law Samuel Sawyer at the time of his death.

The four known children of Zadock Reed and Lucy (McLain) McLean
-Francis Reed born 1770 Antrim, Hillsboro, New Hampshire
per LDS And date from NH Town Birth Records
-Susannah Reed 1774-June 17, 1815 [(5) p 657]
-Sally Reed 1776-November 04, 1844  [(5) p 657]
-Dudley Reed Abt. 1791 Antrim, Hillsboro, New Hampshire-Aft. 1860 probably Grieg, Lewis Co. NY

Ages and genders match for Francis and Dudley in the 1800 census.  Susannah and Sally would have been married by 1800.  This census suggests that there were also 2 white males born between 1785 and 1790, one female after 1790, one female born 1785-1790 and one female born 1775-1784.  It could be that there were others living with the family at the time of the census but in all likelihood, Zadock and Lucy had five more children than we know about at this time.
