JOSEPH LONG

October 24, 1761(Bapt.) Sharpsburg, Washington, MD-
July 09, 1824 Monroe Twp., Washington Co., Indiana
Private in Maryland during Revolutionary War
&
Elizabeth (Myers) MEYER
February 23, 1761 Frederick, MD -Sept. 24, 1843 Monroe twp., Washington Co., IN
daughter of Patriot Michael MYERS, Sr.

Joseph's Birth
Joseph was born October 24, 1761in Sharpsburg, Washington, MD  (77) (79). Joseph Long's parents are still need conclusive verification.  The Church of Latter Day Saints lists the birth, death and marriage dates for Joseph.  LDS also lists his father as Martin Long/Lang from Germany.  Martin was born in either Germany (73) or in Maryland (74) and that he died aft. 1784 in Frederick Co., MD (73).   Martin has been said to have married a woman named Agnes who was born Abt. 1726 (76) and that the name was likely changed from Lang to Long.  Martin is shown living in the Washington, MD in 1790 which is the same county as his son Joseph lived. Connection to Martin Long/Lang

Joseph seems to have been of German heritage.  He attended the Lutheran Church.  Frederick County MD was settled by many Germanic families. The name Lang/Long has been problematic to follow in this area.

Elizabeth Meyer's Birth
Elizabeth was born February 23, 1761 in Frederick, Maryland (79).  She is the daughter of Michael MYERS, Sr. and Magdelena (Macdolany or Magdolany).  Death:The newspaper article describing the S.A.R.'s placement of tombstones
on Elizabeth and Joseph's graves provides her date of death. It may have appeared on the original tombstone.

Elisabeth Meyer and her husband, Joseph Long, are buried on their farm which is located in the southwest quarter of Section 32 in Monroe Twp., Washington Co., IN. The tombstones, placed there by the S.A.R. in 1982, are enclosed
by a fence.

LIFE OF JOSEPH LONG
In 1778 Joseph Long enlisted while living in Sharpsburg, Washington Co., MD and served as a Private in the Revolutionary War. (126) He would have been about 17 years old when he enlisted.  His records show that he remained in the service for six years and 7 months. The Archives of Maryland Muster Rolls and the other records of service of Maryland Troops in the American Revolution 1775-1783 documents the war records below.  Some dates conflict with info. above. 131

It appears that shortly after his discharge from the service, Joseph married Elizabeth (Myers) Meyer at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick Co., MD. on September 26, 1784. (81) She was said to be the daughter of Michael Myers, Sr. (Abt. 1720 Frederick, MD-Bef. October 29, 1785 Sharpsburg, Washington, MD and Magdelena) (132). Jpseph  would have been 23 years old at this time. (81)  The couple had at least 8, possibly 9 children beginning in 1785.  Joseph and Elizabeth Long must have moved to Tennessee after their marriage as their first son, John was born there on July 24, 1785. Their next child, Jacob Long was born March 31, 1788 but that was in Virginia.  Census for 1790 (128)and 1800 (129) has them in Maryland again.  The youngest children were born in Grainger, TN suggesting they moved back to this state.  By the time of Joseph's death he lived in Indiana.

Joseph Long died July 09, 1824 at the age of 62 in Monroe twp., Washington Co., IN (81).   Researcher Jeff Long indicated  Joseph was buried on the farm of Frank Lockwood and that the stone is broken.  The name "Long" remains visible with inscription "A Soldier of the Revolutionary War".   The other stone says "Elizabeth wife of Joseph Long." (127).

Pension benefits became available in 1838 for Elizabeth Long after her husband had died some 14 years earlier  Revolutionary Heritage Quest records show Elizabeth's application and documentation for this family:
