He has a reference number of (4).40 From an article taken from the History of Litchfield County, Connecticut, Published 1881 describing the town of Goshen:

North of the house of Grimes, and about sixty rods south of the house long owned and occupied by Deacon Augustus Thompson, but now owned by Abraham Norton and his son William, stood the house of Gideon Hurlbut, from Wethersfield on the east of the road.

Further along in the article -- A little north of this, on the same side of the way, and a little north of the Woodruff house, stood the house of Deacon Gideon Thompson, from New Haven. This house was palisaded against the Indians. The manner of fortifying a house was this: they dug a deep ditch around the house, placed loges perpendicularly in it all around the house, leaving a space only for a gate. The logs were placed close together, sharpened at the top, and extended eight, ten, or twelve feet above the ground. The earth taken from the trench was then returned, and beaten down until the logs stood firmly; and this, with a gate well secured, was a tolerable defense against a sudden attack from the Indians. It is needless, perhaps to say, that the Indians did not deal in artillery. At this house a town-meeting was held in May, 1741. He was one of the first deacons in the church, being appointed at the time of the organization of the church, in November, 1740, before the ordination of Mr. Heaton, or very soon afterwards. He was the first representative from this town to the General Assembly, 1757, and in 1759, he died at Hartford while a member of the Assembly. He was the grandfather of Jonathan Thomson and Deacon Augustus Thomson. From this house of Deacon Gideon Thomson there was no road open either north or west in 1745, but all was forest, with the exception of a settlement in Canada Village, so called.

TOWN OF GOSHEN Litchfield County Connecticut

EARLY HISTORY - 1836

The township of Goshen was sold at New Haven, in December, 1737, and its settlement commenced in one or two years afterwards. The first inhabitants were principally from New Haven, Wallingford, and Farmington. It is stated that the houses of Gideon Thompson and John Beach, who were among the first settlers, were palisadoed in, for a defense against the Indians. Mr. Beach's house was situated on East street, about 2-1/2 miles from the present South Congregational church; the house of Mr. Thompson, stood on West street, near a mile to the southwest. Goshen was incorporated as a town in 1749. It is bounded N. by Norfolk, E. by Torrington and Winchester, W. by Cornwall, and S. by Litchfield; it is 9 miles in length and 4-1/2 in breadth. The central part is 6 miles from Litchfield, 32 west from Hartford and 42 from New Haven. It is the most elevated township in the state, but not generally mountainous; the surface being undulating, affording an interesting diversity of hills and vales. The soil is a gravelly loam, deep, strong and fertile, admirably adapted for grazing. This is one of the best towns for the dairy business in the state. Large quantities of cheese are annually made, the fame of which is widely and justly celebrated, and the inhabitants are generally in prosperous circumstances. In neatness, in and about their dwellings, and in the appearance of general comfort and prosperity, they are not exceeded, if equalled, by any town in the state.

The above is a representation of the Congregational church and some other buildings in the central part of the town. The building seen on the right, with a small spire, is the Academy, where the higher branches of education are taught. The common district school-house is of brick, the first building seen in the engraving south of the church. The other Congregational church in the town, is four miles northeast from this. There was formerly an Episcopal church, situated about 2 miles to the northeast. About the time of the American Revolution, the Episcopal society, becoming very much reduced in numbers, sold their house to the north Congregational society; but while they were endeavoring to draw it towards their selection of the town, it was blown down by the wind. The first meeting house in the town was built of logs; it stood about 80 rods below the church seen in the engraving. The elevated ground seen beyond the houses in the engraving, is called Ivy mountain. This is considered the most elevated point of land in the state. It affords a most extensive and interesting prospect, in almost every direction; to the west is a view of the Catskill mountains for a considerable extent, their rugged features, and high and disorderly hills; and to the east is a view of the elevated country east of the Connecticut river. There is this rare and peculiar circumstance, with respect to what is called the East street, in Goshen; that the rain which falls on the front of the houses, descends into the Housatonic river, and that which falls on the back side into the Waterbury river. About one mile and a half west from the central part, is a collection of several mills, and some manufacturing establishments, around which is collected a cluster of houses; this place is called Canada village. This village is said to have derived its name in the following manner: A man by the name of Frisbie, who was the first miller in this place, was frequently saying from year to year, that he intended the next year to move to Canada, and still continued to stay where he was. The people finally agreed to bring Canada to him, by calling the place where he lived by that name. The Methodist church was built in this place. The stream which passes this village is fed from a large pond in the vicinity, and is admirably calculated for water works, having an adequate supply of water, characterized by great uniformity, being neither affected by droughts nor heavy rains.

The first minister in the town, was the Rev. Stephen Heaton. He was buried about a mile south of the Congregational church. His monument, with a few others, stands at present in an open field, near the Litchfield road; the following is the inscription.

"In memory of the Rev. Stephen Heaton, V.D.M. primus de Goshen, who was born at New Haven, 30th of Novr. 1710, ordained Nov. 1740, departed this life the 29th of Decr. 1788, Æ. 79. In his character appeared Friendship, Patriotism, Sociability, Kindness and Charity, Benevolence, Virtue and Religion.." (Also inscribed is the following): "Pallida Mors æquo pulsat Pede pauperum Tabernas Regumque Turres" (which the writer translates as): "Pale death invades with the same step, the hovels of beggars and the palaces of kings."

THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST. MARY LENHAM

A SHORT GUIDE

HOW OLD IS THE CHURCH

The Church was originally Saxon and Norman, but was extensively damaged by fire in 1297. The fire, which was of malicious origin, also destroyed the Tithe Barns. As far as is known, the culprits were never discovered but nonetheless they were excommunicated by sentence of Archbishop Winchelsea as published by him in person at Lenham in February 1298.

The oldest part of the present building is to be found in the Chapel of St Edmund adjoining the chancel. There is part of the original Norman east wall with an upper window, beneath which an early 14th Century decorated window has been inserted. The pillar between the Chapel and Chancel is also a survivor from the earlier building.

Most of the Chancel and all of the Nave were rebuilt after the fire in the Early English style of the 14th Century. The North Aisle was added in that same century and the Tower was completed towards the end of the century. The Sacristy (the present Vestry) to the East of the Chapel of St Edmund dates from the 15th Century.

THE CHAPEL OF St EDMUND

The Altar is of Bethersden Marble and is believed to be the Tomb of Thomas Horne, d.1471. The arms, forming two of the carved panels, are repeated on the headstones of the pillars supporting the arch which separates the Chapel from the North Aisle and are almost obscured by the organ.

To the left of the Altar, on the North Wall, is the I Memorial to the first Viscount Chilston of Chilston Park whose descendant, the fourth Viscount, is .1 patron of the living.

In the North Wall of the Chapel is a door to the turret stair case, which gave access to a medieval rood screen that spanned the full width of the Church at the entrance to the Chapel and Chancel.

The two manual organ of 1910, with its pneumatic action, is a good example of the work of Messrs. Norman & Beard from that period.

THE CHANCEL

The medieval Altar slab was not destroyed when the reformers of the first Elizabethan reign removed stone Altars from churches and replaced them with wooden communion tables. The slab was carefully let into the floor beneath the Communion Table and there remained until rediscovered in the early years of the present century. It was restored to its rightful place and remains a comparative rarity in Kentish Churches. The Cross and Candlesticks, placed there at the same time, are of the late 18th Century and probably of Italian or Spanish workmanship. Of the same period is the fine brass chandelier.

On the splay of the South Window beside the Altar is a 14th Century wall painting of a robed Bishop, with a masonary background elaborated with roses. In the floor on the North side of the Altar is the tombstone of Robert Thompson, grandson of Mary Honywood. She died in 1620 at the age of 92 leaving 16 children, 114 grandchildren, 228 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren - a total of 367.

Let into the North Wall of the Sanctuary, at a curious angle, is the figure of a priest in Mass vestments in a stone coffin, which is oddly divided by a plain stone fillet. This figure is believed to represent Thomas de Apuldefelde, who lived in the reign of Edward III (1327-1377).

One survival from the fire of 1297 is the stone seat, or sedile, on the South Wall of the Sanctuary. The seat and arm rests appear to be of the 13th Century, but the canopy is a 14th Century addition subsequent to the fire.

Notice the fine old chest, of unknown date, with its ten locks, in which are stored the Parish Registers dating from 1558.

The 15th Century Choir Stalls with their hinged misericord seats for the use of pre-Reformation monks, may not be original to the Church.

THE NAVE

The Pulpit, a work of art dating from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, is considered by some authorities to be the finest in Kent. The sounding board above is dated 1622 but it is probably an addition to the older work of the Standard and Pulpit, which are dated 50 years earlier.

Of possibly the same period, is the Lectern with its swinging head and linenfold carved panelling. The possibility that the Lectern was a pre-Reformation "singing" desk has engaged the speculation of a number of antiquarians. In this case its origin would date from the early 16th Century.

On the South Wall of the Nave, facing the entrance, is the remains of a mural showing St Michael weighing souls. In one scale is a small figure with evil spirits vainly trying to pull him down, whilst the balance is turned by the Virgin's rosary in the other scale. This painting dates from the mid 14th Century.

The octagonal font on its curvilinear carved pedestal dates from the 15th century.

Hanging on a pillar near the font is a photograph of one of the Church's most treasured processions, a beautiful silver gift Communion Chalice of 1562. This Chalice was presented to the Church in 1688 by Dean Castilion of Rochester and is still used week by week.

The Royal Arms of Queen Anne, dated 1705, were restored and replaced in the Nave in 1969.

The massive doors which separate the Nave from the Tower, were installed when the West Gallery was dismantled in the middle of the last century. At the same time, the panelling of the older pews was incorporated into the present pews in the front part of the Nave. Additional pews were made from timber and panelling , recovered from the gallery, and installed in the rear part of the Nave. The Vicar at the time, Rev Charles Parkin, is credited personally with the carving of the doors in the tower arch and other work in the Church.

THE TOWER

Constructed towards the end of the 14th Century, the Tower contains a ring of eight bells, which were rehung in 1959. The oldest bell was cast by Robert Mot in 1592.

The sixth bell was made by Joseph Hatch, perhaps the most famous of the Kentish bell-founders, in 1619. The tenor, which weighs 21 cwt (1066 kg) was cast by James Bartlett of Whitechapel.

SURROUNDINGS

All that now remains of the Monastic establishment attached to the Church is one wall of a house in Church Square, with an attached gate jamb surmounted by the springing stone of an arch. The Lych Gate, leading to Church Square, is a modern replica of its 15th Century predecessor. Two of the great Tithe Barns, which replaced those that were destroyed in the great fire of 1297, survived until, unhappily, one was burnt down in September 1962. The larger and finer of the two remains unharmed.

First wife - Name unknown - children:

1] John [the mariner], b 1632 = Ann Vicars
2] Anthony, b Dec 1634, d 29 Dec 1654 [According to Savage, d.s.p. willing
his property to brother & sister, John & Bridget, and 3 'half-sisters,
children of goodwife Camp, who had been 2nd wife of his father.' Will d. 26
Dec 1654] This begs the question - who was the 3rd half-sister? as we only
have Hannah & Lydia. No mention is made in this reference to the Will of a
half-brother, Ebenezer.
3] Bridget, b 1636 = Rev. John Bowers

Second wife - Catherine [Unknown] - children:

This would mean Ebenezer was a posthumous child, [I think] baptized 8 months after his father died.

For the most part, the rest of this book deals with the descendants of #2 above, John Thompson = Anne Vicars through their son Samuel, b 12 May 1669, = Rebecca Bishop.

I don't know this this information will be of any help to you, but it is what I found in my files. Beverly Stercula had worked up a list of some of Anthony's descendants, as well as those of his brothers, John and William, but it is incomplete, and makes no mention of their parents. Her references - for the most part - are "Families of Ancient New Haven" no author/compiler named.

In "An Account of Some of the Ancestors of Harry Thompson and Myra Hull", compiled by Clarence Willis Eastman, Amherst, Mass 1916, he mentions Anthony's parents. He states they are buried in the parish church at Lenham, Kent County, England, the following inscription covering their burial place:

"Here underlye the bodies of Henry Thompson and Dorothy, his wife, of Royton Chapel, in this Parish. He was the son and co-heir of Thomas Thompson [of Sandwich, Merchant], and she the eldest daughter of Robert Honeywood of Pett, in Charing."

He then goes on to list the children of Henry and Dorothy, as follows:

1] Robert, bapt. 26 March 1695 [Also buried there]
2] Mary, bapt. 14 Oct 1699
3] Judith, bapt. 2 Aug 1602
4] John, bapt. 18 Nov 1604
5] Elizabeth, b 20 Sept 1607
6] Anthony, b 30 Aug 1612.

You will notice, there is NO William mentioned here as their child, and yet Anthony, in his nuncupative Will, mentions brothers John and William. It is possible that William could have been born between 1607-1612 and the record overlooked. Henry Thompson died in Lenham, England 20 Oct 1648. No death date given for Dorothy. James Thompson was born in Goshen March 1, 1741, and mist have been very nearly the first white child born in the town. He boult and occupies for nany years the house situated on the west side of West Street, facing the road which leads from that point to the residecne of Mrs. Moses Lyman. The dwelling has been recently torn down. What follows relating to his life is compiles from the recollections of those who know him, and found in letters addressed to his children after his death. He was above the average in size of men, say six feet high, and well formed. He was quick in action, cheerful in habits, kind in his attentions of children, winning their gratitude and confidence. Although a farmer, he was often engaged in building grist and sawmills. He owned and imporved large tracts of land. He owned more horses than any other man in town, introduced the first pleasure wagon, and, I think, the first wagon of any kind in the towm. He was active in town and society affairs, He was a slave-owner. He liberated "Old Hess" and his wife, built them a house and barn and gave them the use of as much land as they could cultivate, and always overloooked and advised them. He was an earnest and consistent Christian, distinguished for hid hospitality to ministers of the Gospel, and a pioneer in gegard to Christian benevolence. He was a liberal contributor to the Connecticut Missionary Society, the oldest missionary society in the country, sending the Gospel to the "new settlements". His wife was in complete sympathy with him in Christian benovolence and work. She was a woman of a degree of intelligence not in common in those days, and as a result of the parents' teaching and prayers, all their children have had a place in the visible church of Christ, or have died in the hope of the believer in Christ.

See pg. 25, Ancestors and Descendants of Joel W. Thompson for movement history of the family.
Reportedly at the age of five, he and his family moved to Hudson, OH and later to Twinsburg, OH. Wife's family moved to Hudson OH in 1814. Joel and Emily were in Ohio in 1816 according to Twinsburg, Ohio History book (1817-1917) along with their 10 children. In 1839, Joel and his son, Augustus went to Winnebago County in 1839 and the entire family moved to this location in 1840, moving in a two horse covered wagon. The railroad did not exist at that time. First home was a log cabin with a puncheon floor.
He was a millwright by trade and in 1839 built a sawmill. After that he built sawmills in Stevens Point WI and Rocton, IL. He was one of the first justices of the peace in Pecatonica Township. In 1852, he went to California, where he superintended the construction of a mill, receiving one thousand dollars for his services. He was away from home at that time for about fourteen or fifteen months. Upon his return, he was involved with agriculture development. He served as a justice of the peace for fifteen or twenty years, retiring from office in the 1870's. While in Ohio, he became a member of the Masonic fraternity and in his life exemplified its beneficent spirit. Both he and his wife were consistent members of the Methodist Episcopal church and the lent their aid and influence to the intellectual and moral, as well as material, development of Winnebago County in its pioneer days. Mr. Thompson gave his political allegiance to the Whig party until its dissolution, when he joined the ranks of the Republican party. In the family of this worthy couple were twelve children, eight sons and four daughters, Gideon, Laura Ann, Harriett, Augustus, Abraham, Joel B., Emily Florilla, Joel Gideon, Edwin, Edward, Joel Mills, and Mary Eliza.

Although John is not listed in the Book ("Thompson Lineage with Mention of Allied Families," by William Baker Thompson) reference, there is mention in Anthony's nuncupative will of John and his brother William.

Another source reports that John Thompson (b 1604) was a brother to Anthony. They had another brother, William also. According to the history written by Clarence W. Eastman on this family (in 1916), Anthony and John (no mention of William made here, but later proven by Will) were sons of Henry Thompson and his wife Dorothy Honeywood of Royton Chapel, at Lenham, Kent Co., England. Henry was said to have been 'co-heir' of Thomas Thompson of Sandwich, Merchant. Dorothy was said to be the eldest daughter of Robert Honeywood of Pett, in Charing.

He has a reference number of (2).40 History of Goshen says his wife was Hellena, said to have died April 8, 1690, she may have been 2nd wife, but according to Thompson Lineage, he Married Ann Vicars on Aug 4, 1656. The children were born in New Haven, Connecticut.

John was designated "Mariner" in the family history written by William Baker Thompson in 1911. They resided at New Haven, CT.

Jared Sidney Torrance, in his history of the descendants of Lewis Hart, states that John's wife was named 'Hellena' according to records of Goshen, CT, and suggests that she may have been a second wife. He also states that she is supposed to have died 8 April 1690. It is certainly possible that he married twice.

At his death, his estate was inventories at nine pounds, eight shillings, sixpence. He served as Selectman of New Haven in 1688.

According to the Will of his brother Anthony, written 26 Dec 1654, he received Anthony's land.

Spouse: Anne VICARS (VICARIS) *. John (Mariner) THOMPSON * and Anne VICARS (VICARIS) * were married on 4 Aug 1656 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts.29,40,47,49,50
It is reported that John and Anne (Vicars) Thompson had a total of eight children.

That "John the Mariner" had a son William is proved by two deeds to the latter, and mention of him in the will of William Thompson (no. 1) in 1682; but there has been considerable doubt as to his identity, as there were two Williams who could be eligible. One, called William, Sr., was a man of some importance, is called "joiner" and "surveyor" in deeds, and frequently had "Mr." prefixed to his name; he married in 1682 Joanna Daniel, widow of John Glover and died in 1741. The other, called William Jr., married before 1708 Martha ____, and died in 1717. The obvious theory is that William, "Sr." was one of the oldest sons of John, and that William, "Jr.," was son of William "Sr.," but this hypothesis, which is generally accepted, proves untenable. The chronology of William, Sr's, recorded family leaves no room for the birth of a son William. Moreover, William, Sr.,, deeded no land to William, Jr., nor did he mention him or his heirs in his will, wherein he made careful provisions for his sons. Nor do the heirs of William, Jr., appear in deeds in which all the heirs of William, Sr., appear; but there is positive evidence to prove that William Jr., was son of John the mariner. First: William, son of John Thompson was born 17 Jan 1674, which is much too late for the birth of William, Sr.; Secondly; John the mariner deeded to his son, William, along with other land, on-third part of his whole division and tract of land (1702), which property was afterwards(1707) deeded away by William Thompson, husbandman (New Haven Deeds, vol 3, pp. 21,34); showing that John's son William was a farmer, whereas William, Sr., always appears as a joiner or surveyor; thirdly; the other land deeded by John the mariner to his son William (New Haven Deeds, vol.3, pp 21,22) is to be found mentioned in the inventory of William, Jr. (New Haven Probate records, vol. 6, p.1); and finally,; Caleb Thompson, who is known to be a son of William, Jr., deeded land that was laid out to his father William Thompson, deceased and other land that was laid out to his grandfather John Thompson, deceased (New Haven. Deeds, vol 8, p 331). The only question that could remain is whether, as sometimes happened, John could have had two sons name William, but evidence is against it, for in John's deed to William, he is referred to as his "son William". also, the will of William Thompson (no. 1) where in he mentioned his "cousin William, son of nephew John", would have distinguished between them if there had been two sons named William. William Jr., who died 13 Mar 1717, married Martha ______ who died after 1755. His estate was not settled until 1730 (New Haven Probate Records, vol 6, p. 1).
