James DeVaney, b. 1817 in Limerick, Ireland married Elizabeth Fitzgerald, b. 25-Dec-1830 in Tipperary, Ireland. James DeVaney immigrated c. 1848. They settled in Cleveland, OH then by 1873 were in Ripon, WI. By the early 1880's they were in Moody County, SD.
They had thirteen children. Four of their thirteen children, two named William and two named Michael are buried in a Catholic Cemetery in Ripon, WI.
The second of their children was Thomas DeVaney, b. 1854 in Cleveland, OH.
Thomas DeVaney married Ellen Gilligan. Ellen Gilligan, per her death certificate was b. 1866, in Austin, MN, however it is more likely that she was born in Newry Township, Freeborn County, MN which is near Austin, MN as the family was located there in 1870.
Ellen's father is William P. Gilligan. William Gilligan was b. 1823-1830 and d. 11-Nov-1913. Ellen's mother was Ellen Fitzpatrick Donahue/Donahoe Gilligan who was born in Ireland in 1832. Ellen Fitzpatrick Donahoe married William Gilligan in Edgar County, IL, 30 Nov 1858, Volume B, page 27, license SA4097 per the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index. In the 1860 Census the Gilligan family is enumerated in Stratton Twonsip, Paris Post Office, Edgar County, IL; William age 27, Ellen age 20 and Mary 3 born in Ohio. Ellen Fitzpatrick Gilligan died 17 May 1906 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, MN. The informant on her death certificate was Hanna Curtin Gilligan McLaughlin. Hanna was the widow of Ellen and William's son William P. Gilligan.
We find the family enumerated in the 1870 Federal Census for Freeborn County, Newry Township, Lansing Post Office on page 1086. Both parents William P. and Ellen Gilligan are listed as being 26 years old and born in Ireland. We know the age in the 1870 census is incorrect for both of them. Listed with them are their five children, Mary 16 born in Illinois (however 1880 census records her as born in OH), Bridget, age 9 born in Illinois, Kate age 7 born in Illinois, William, age 5 born in Illinois and Ellena age 2 born in Minnesota. Per this census, Ellen was actually born in 1868. Per the 1880 U.S. Census for Mower County, MN, William Gilligan was aged 50 and born in Ireland. His wife Ellen Gilligan was 48 and born in Ireland. Two children were listed, William, 16, born in Illinois and Ellen, 14, born in MN.
Per the death certificate of William Gilligan, he was a widower and a retired Rail Road Engineer who was born in Ireland. William, his daughter Ellen and her husband Thomas are all buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery with a family headstone with the name Gilligan on it. The obituary of Ellen Gilligan DeVaney refers to three sisters surviving her as of her date of death (30-Nov-1924); Mrs. William Gahagan of Austin, MN, Mrs. J. McBride of Meadow, SD and Mrs. John Walsh of Los Angeles, CA. There is no mention of her brother William who died in 1887 just prior to his son's birth.
We located William and Ellen Gilligan in the 1900 Census living with their daughter Katherine McBride and her husband James J. McBride in Madison, Lake County, SD. Katherine was the superintendant of the Madison Hospital. She and James were recorded as being married one year. We located them in 1920 in Brown County, SD, City of Aberdeen with their daughter A. Leone McBride, age 18, born in Iowa in the 12 grade of High School. We located Bridget and her husband John Walsh in the 1880 census in Avoca, Murray, MN (FHL Film 1254627 National Archives Film T9-0627 Page 30A enumerated as Welch) with their two children John age 3 born in MN and Mary age 2 months born in MN. We located Bridget and John in Sioux Falls City, SD in the 1900 Census with seven of their reported nine children (Mary A. b. 1880 in MN, William P. b. 1882 in MN, Nellie b. 1887 in SD, Frank A. b. 1889 in SD, Catherine b. 1893 in SD, Timothy J. b. 1896 in SD and Frances M. (daughter) b. 1898 in SD. The census reports 9 children born and 9 children living for Bridget and John. We identified a son John as noted above and there must be another child between Bridget and John who was married or living away from the family in 1900, possibly born in 1881. The California death index shows a Richard Walsh born in MN 19 Dec 1881 and we have yet to verify if this is their son. There is a tenth child, Joseph Bernard born 19 Dec 1901 recorded in the California Death index as born in SD with mother's maiden name Gilligan and father Walsh. We were able to locate dates of deaths for many of the Walsh children through the California Death Index. The details are included on our surnames pages. We also have identified that their daughter Catherine Walsh married a Madison.
We have located Mary Donahoe/Donahue (Gilligan) Gahagan and her husband Owen Gahagan in the 1880 census for Windom Township, Mower County, MN, FHL Film 1254626, National Archives Film T9-0626 page 567 B. Mary is recorded here as born in OH. The census enumerator wrote her husband's name down as Owen. From obituary for Mary Gahagen we have identified that she was the sister of Mrs. J.J. McBride so it appears that the obituary for Ellen Gilligan DeVaney incorrectly reported her sister as Mrs. William Gahagan. Mary and Owen had one son Thomas in the census, age 2 (b. 1878 in MN). Living with them was Katherine Gillegan, age 18 born in IL recorded as a boarder rather than a sister-in-law. There are several other children that we have identified for Mary and Owen. Details of the Gahagan's can be found in the surname and index links. The death certificate for Mary Gahagan lists her father's name as Mike Donahue. Her mother's name is not listed. As noted above, William P. Gilligan, son of William and Ellen died in 1887. He had two children with his wife Hanna Curtin Gilligan McLaughlin. They lived in Minneapolis, MN when William died. Their children were Helen "Nell" Terressa Gilligan (6 Dec 1885-12 Aug 1930) and John Francis Gilligan (26 Oct 1887-19 Dec 1928). We have not been able to identify why Ellen Fitzpatrick Gilligan was in Minneapolis, MN in 1906 when she died and why the widowed daughter-in-law was the informant on her death certificate.
We still need to identify where Kate and James McBride were living during the 1910 census as they were no longer at the hospital. As previously noted, per the 1920 Census they were living in Brown County, Aberdeen City, SD with their daughter A. Leone McBride, age 18 who was born in Iowa.
Thomas DeVaney and Ellen Gilligan were married about 1880. They had nine children. Joseph, Grover, Thomas (Tab), Ellen (Nellie), Harold, Richard, (click here to read the obituaries for Richard DeVaney) William, Donald and Alice Catherine DeVaney, b. 15- Feb- 1884, near Colman, SD.
Alice Catherine DeVaney (click to read obituary for Alice DeVaney) married Francis Henry McGinty in Colman on 14-Nov-1906. Mr. and Mrs. McGinty had ten children: Marie Elizabeth (Luken), Francis Henry (Bud), William Joseph , (Helen) Lucille (Synsvol), Ellen Genevive (Nellie) (French), (Alice) Bernice (Roche), Irene Margaret (Winbourne), Rita Lorraine (Burleigh), Edwin Robert and Paul Jerome.
I would like to express my gratitude to my second cousin, Marla DeVaney-Hassler, grand-daughter of Frederick DeVaney (brother of Thomas) for sharing the DeVaney family genealogy with me. Without her generosity I would have had a long search locating the ancestors and relatives of Alice Catherine DeVaney.
