Thomas Johns of Floyd Co., KY, written 1916 by Winnie Johns Thomas Johns came from Amherst County, Virginia. His wife, Nancy Lane, came from Davis County, Virginia. Stephen Loar’s wife may know the names of their parents. Thomas Johns was the first Johns who came to the Big Sandy River. He lived on the west side of the river below Mud Creek. He sold this farm to his brother-in-law, James Lane, and moved to Lawrence County. He owned the land between the mouth of Lick Creek and the Three Mile Bridge above Louisa. That farm was afterward divided among his three sons; Dan, who died in Minnesota, Harry, the father of James Johns who lives two miles above Louisa, and Louis, the father of M.H. Johns who lives in Louisa, and a daughter Jane, the wife of John Allison, at one time the County Clerk of Lawrence County. Thomas Johns Sr’s, wife was Nancy Lane, the sister of James and Samuel Lane (Layne), Thomas Johns and wife had seven children: Dan Married Ann Adkins who was born at the mouth of Shelby Creek. She was the daughter of the First County Clerk of Pike County. Harry Married Lucy Harriford who lived in Floyd County at the mouth of Abbott Creek. His daughter Nancy Hatcher, lives at the mouth of Mud Creek. (1916) Louis married Mary Fulkerson. She was a cousin of William Fulkerson who lived below Louisa. She was a daughter of Peter Loar’s sister. Peter Loar’s mother was a Fulkerson. His first wife was a cousin of William Vinson. Louis Johns owned the land immediately above the mouth of Lick Creek and on Lick Creek. His son, Martin Harrison Johns, now lives in Louisa (1916) and is about 80 years old. Thomas Married Elizabeth, the daughter of John Graham, who lived in Floyd County five miles above Prestonsburg. He was the father of John Johns Sr. who lives in Winchester (1916). Emily The wife of George H. Burgess, lived on the east side of the river ten miles above Louisa. Jane The wife of John Allison, lived on Lick Creek two files from Louisa. She was the mother of Ad. Clayton, the wife of County Judge John M. Clayton, and the grandmother of County Judge James Clayton. She was also the mother of Mrs. L.H. York of Louisa, Kentucky. Elizabeth The wife of Tandy Lane (Layne), lived on the Betsy Lane Branch in Floyd County below the Mouth of Mud Creek. Elizabeth had five children as follows::

when 22 years of age Thomas Johns' wife had two brothers, James and Samuel Lane (Layne). James lived and died opposite the mouth of the Betsy Lane Branch about 1875. He married Kate Hager who came from Virginia. Samuel Lane lived near the mouth of Prater Creek, his mother was Nancy, the grandmother of Dow Marr of Pikeville. James Lane had nine children: Tandy Married Betsy, daughter of Thomas Johns. She was the mother of Emily Powell who lives below the mouth of Elkhorn, and of Mary Harmon who lives at the mouth of Long Fork of Shelby. John Married Betsy Priest. He lived at the mouth of Mare Branch. He had two children, Pem Lane And the wife of A.J. Hatcher William Married Sophia, daughter of John Graham. He was the father of John Lane who lives in Prestonsburg. Lindsey married

Lane, the grandfather of Samuel Lane had seven children: Johns Heirs Agreement Thomas Johns, Jr., Dec’d Article of agreement made and entered into this 16th (or 10th) day of February 1841 between James L. Johns, Mary Johns his wife, David W. Johns, Thomas P. Johns and Elizabeth his wife, Harrison Johns, John. W. Allison and Mary Jane Allison late Mary Jane Johns, Tandy M. Layne, Elizabeth Layne late Elizabeth Johns, Geo. R. Burgess and Emily Burgess, late Emily Johns, the said Trasidy (? Can’t read). Layne said Elizabeth M. Layne, Thomas P. Johns and Elizabeth, his wife, of the County of Floyd and Sate of Kentucky and the other party of the County of Lawrence and State of Kentucky all of who are heirs of Thomas Johns, late deceased of Lawrence County and State aforsead (sic), all of which heirs being of lawful age and being willing to have a final dicision (sic) of the estate of the said Thomas Johns dec’d, which is as follows to wit: that is to say Nancy Johns the widow of the deceased Thomas Johns is to have her right of decree in Two Hundred fifty acres of land which the said Thomas Johns in his lifetime _____ of Fred’k Moore also to have the use of a black boy named Peter, Viletta, a woman and her child during her life also one horse beast together with the household & kitchen furniture and a sufficiency off the said farm for her maintenance need it is agreed by and ____ the said parties that the said James L. Johns, Daniel W. Johns, Thomas P. Johns and Harrison Johns are to have as their respectation (sic) first of said estate. Two hundred and fifty acres of land, which said Thomas Johns deceased purchased of Fred’k Moore, aforesaid, and in addition all the land said deceased purchased of Richard Apperson, attorney in fact for Charles P. Forbes, and all other land or lands belonging to Estate and further it is agreed that the said James L. Johns, Daniel M. Johns, Thomas P. Johns and Elizabeth his wife and Harrison Johns are to have and hold the before ______ negroes at the death of their mother Sirocay (?) Johns-Peter ie black boy, Viletta a black woman and her child, George also Maria a black woman and her two children, Lucinda a black girl, and Hiram a yellow boy, and o have all the real and personal property belonging to the said Estate. And that the afores’d James L. Johns, Daniel W. Johns, Thomas P. Johns, and Harrison Johns bind themselves ___ heirs ____ to adjust and liquidate all just demands against said estate, and the said John W., Allison and Mary Jane his wife, late Mary Jane Johns, have this day bargained and sold all their interest in said estate in land or lands also their interest both in real and personal property belonging to said estate for the consideration of seven hundred and fifty dollars to them in hand paid at or before the Signing, Sealing and delivery of these presents and they further agreed to that the said James L. Johns, Daniel M. Johns, Thomas P. Johns and Elizabeth his wife, Harrison Johns, John M. Allison and Mary Jane his wife, Tandy Layne and Elizabeth his wife that they all hereby relinquish all their rights _____ to George R. Burgess and Emily his wife to these agreements. Seal Commonwealth of Kentucky, Lawrence County, to wit; I Elea R. Kelly, clerk of the County court for the County aforesaid, do certify that this memorandum of agreement was this day produced to me by Harrison Johns and ordered to record. Page 383 Received February 10th 1841 of Mary Jane Allison Three hundred and fifty dollars at six per cent which is to go towards the payment of a certain tract of land which is a part of a tract of land Thomas Johns, deceased, purchased of Richard Apperson, attorney in fact for Charles G. Forbes which land is bounded as follows: To Wit, beginning at the mouth of a branch on the north most side of Lick Creek known by the name of the William Burgess branch thence up said branch to where it strikes the Military line then a southerly direction reversing said Military line to where it strikes Lick Creek thence down said Lick Creek to the mouth of the branch, the place of beginning which land lies in the Military survey and also the balance of a thirty acre tract of land said Thomas Johns purchased of Richard Apperson, Attorney in Fact for Charles G. Forbes. It is understood that the said Thomas Johns in his lifetime ______ conditionally did make sale of a certain portion of said thirty acres of land to Asbury Harris now (?) in that event if said Harris does not pay for said portion of land unto the heirs of Thomas Johns, deceased, she is to have the same and residue of same land said M. J. Allison is to have all of which two boundaries of land James L. Johns, Daniel W. Johns, Thomas P. Johns and Elizabeth his wife and Harrison Johns bind ourselves our heirs executed and Administrators to let the said Mary J. Allison at the rates of four dollars per acre at the rates of said obligation between said Apperson and Thomas Johns deceas’d, and in the court the said parties should _______ to pay the purchase money due on said land which they have bound Thomas Johns to as in an Article of Division this day entered into by the heirs of Thomas Johns deceased then _____ in that case the parties are to pay interest on that above named sum of money and also about 200 acres on the flat lick which J. H. Allison purchased of Thomas Johns, but should they succeed and pay me purchase money then they the said James L. Johns, Daniel W. Johns, Thomas P. Johns & Elizabeth his wife and Harrison Johns bind themselves and their heirs to make to the said Mary J. Allison or her heirs a good general warranty deed for said parcels of land in testimony whereof the said James L. Johns, Dan’l W. Johns, Thomas P. Johns & Elizabeth his wife, and Harrison Johns have hereunto __t our hands and seals day and date first above written.
