John Holtz
b. between 1753 and 1766, d. 1820

Father Benedict Holtz b. 22 March 1717, d. 24 May 1792
Mother Susanna Bohein b. 3 February 1722, d. 31 May 1798
Pedigree

Last Edited 10 Jul 2005

Birth between 1753 and 1766  John Holtz was born between 1753 and 1766.
He was the son of Benedict Holtz and Susanna Bohein
Marriage before 1786  John Holtz married Blandina Shuh, daughter of Jacob Shuh and Catharina ?, before 1786.1,2
Marriage 28 December 1792  John Holtz married Mary Didawick, daughter of Stephen Didawick, on 28 December 1792 at Shenandoah County, VA.3
Death 1820  John Holtz died in 1820 at Augusta County, VA.
Note   I have no absolute proof that the John Holtz who lived in Shenandoah Co in 1785, was married to "Landenia" Schuh as of the date of her father's estate settlement (1780), married Mary Didawick in Shenandoah Co, and ended up in Augusta County with daughters Elizabeth and Susanna (who were too old to be daughters of the second wife) and sons Jacob and John Benedict (who were born between 1794 and 1800 based on their census ages) was the same John Holtz who had daughters Elizabeth and Susanna baptised in Frederick Co, MD while married to a Blandina, had wife Blandina die in 1790, and then had sons Johh Jacob and John Benedict baptised while married to an "A. Maria," were the same person. But the names and ages of all the family members match, and we do know from the 1850 census that daughter Elizabeth was born in Maryland. We also know that Jabez Schuh, Landenia's brother, lived for a time in Frederick County, MD. I just think it is almost beyond coincidence that all these names and ages could match up and still be two separate families. Also look at the family in the 1800 census. It shows that the John Holtz who had wife Mary and three children born in the 90s also has the two older daughters who were baptised with parents John and Blandina.
Note   The Ancestral File says that John husband of Blantina was the son of John Jacob Holtz and Anna Catherina Lederman. However, John Jacob's will in Frederick County, MD names three children, not including John, so I believe he is not their son. On the other hand, Benedict's will names a son John who at the time (December 1790) was a widower with two children. This exactly fits our John, since Blandina died in early 1790, leaving him with Elizabeth and Susannah, and he remarried in 1792. Also notice that John named his first son John Benedict.4,5
Fact 1 between 1784 and 1785  Between 1784 and 1785, at Shenandoah County, VA,, John Holtz was listed for personal property taxes in just two years. This would have been at the time of his father-in-law's death and settlement of the estate. I reviewed the Shenandoah tax lists for 1782 through 1799, and these were the only two years in which he was listed..6
Census 1800  John Holtz appeared on the census of 1800 at Frederick Town, Frederick County, MD, as follows: 20001-12001. Next door is Michael Holtz 10010-11011.7
Fact 1 between 1802 and 1810  Between 1802 and 1810, at Augusta County, VA,, John Holtz was listed for personal property taxes. He was not present in the years between 1796 and 1801. I did not check years after 1810..8
Fact 1 between 1803 and 1810  Between 1803 and 1810, at Augusta County, VA,, Joh Holtz appeared several times on the lists of those who took communion at St. John's Church..9
Fact 1 7 December 1807  On 7 December 1807, at Augusta County, VA,, John Holtz bought 75 acres from the heirs of George Weaver..10
Census 1810  John Holtz appeared on the census of 1810 at Augusta County, VA, as follows: John Hults 02001-00001.11
Will 12 January 1820  John Holtz left a will on 12 January 1820 at Augusta County, VA. In the name of God Amen. I John Holtz of the county of Augusta State of Virginia being sound in memory but weake in body and knowing hte uncertaincy of life and that it is appointed for all men to die do make this my last will and testament for the disposition of such estate as it has pleased God to bless me with in manner and following to wit: First I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife the whole benefit of my plantation ?? during her natural life for her support and also bequeath unto my wife all my personal estate after all my just debts and funeral expenses are paid but should my wife again marry the bequeath of my plantation shall be void and in such case I bequeath unto her only the one-third of the rents of my plantation and she must leave the plantation in case of intermarriage. Second I give and bequeath unto my son Jacob my plantation to be possessed by him and his heirs and assigns forever, ?? after the death or intermarriage of my wife. Third I give and bequeath unto my son John Benedic the sum of fifty dollars to be paid by my son Jacob one year after the death of my wife. Fourthly I give and bequeath unto my two daughters Susanna ?Barnnard ?Basenard and Elizabeth Shoe each of them ten dollars to be paid by my son Jacob at the death of my wife. I appoint my beloved wife Executrix and my friend Barnhard ?Lourmand Executor of this my last will and testament and revoking all other wills heretofore made by me this twelfth day of Januray one thousand eight hundred and twenty.

At a court held for Augusta County on March the 24th, 1820, the last will and testament of John Holtz was presented in court and proved by the oath of John Wade and Jacob Brobeck and ordered to be recorded.

I went through the St. John's church records looking for a Susannah with a last name that started with B. There was a Susannah Basserman, which is probably the closest to the name in the will, although it really looks like it ends with a "D."12

Mary Didawick

Pedigree

Last Edited 30 Nov 2002

Mary Didawick is the daughter of Stephen Didawick.1
Marriage 28 December 1792  Mary Didawick married John Holtz, son of Benedict Holtz and Susanna Bohein, on 28 December 1792 at Shenandoah County, VA.2
Note   Even though his wife was not named in the will, I know that John Holtz's second wife was named Mary because at the estate settlement there were three purchasers named Holtz - Jacob, Benedict and Mary. The last line of the settlement was $40 from Mary Holtz. It came after the subtotal of the sale items but before the final total. I can't read all the words, but it starts with "to" and ends with "appraisement" and there are several words in between. I assume the widow kept some of the property and paid the difference between the total receipts and the appraisal amount. Also there was one Holtz Household in the 1820 Augusta Co census, headed by Mary Holtz.3,4
Census 1820  Mary Didawick appeared on the census of 1820 at Augusta County, VA, as follows: Mary Holtz 001100-00001.3

Family John Holtz b. between 1753 and 1766, d. 1820

Jacob Schnerr
d. 1771

Last Edited 13 Nov 2005

Marriage between 1755 and 1758  Jacob Schnerr married Anna Barbara Albrecht, daughter of Joseph Albrecht and an unknown first wife (?), between 1755 and 1758.
Death 1771  Jacob Schnerr died in 1771 at Shenandoah County, VA.1
Note   "The founder of the Snarr family in the Shenandoah Valley was Jacob Snarr (Schnerr) who came from Germany in 1754, lived in Northampton County, PA for about 15 years and then settled in Shenandoah County, where he died in 1771. His wife was named Anna Barbara and they had at least three children: Barbara, who married John Mauck in 1786, Jacob Jr. who died young, and Jurg Heinrich (Henry), born March 10, 1761, married Barbara Didawick, daughter of Stephen Didawick (Ditewig) and died near Mt. Olive in 1816. " [Since this is the only Snarr family in the county, the mysterious "Nip" has to belong to it. She was most likely born before the family joined the Jerusalem Church where her siblings' births were recorded.].1
Immigration 22 October 1754  He immigrated on 22 October 1754 to Philadelphia County, PA. The passenger list of the ship Henrietta, Capt. John Rose, "from Rotterdam but last from Cowes. Qual." included a Jacob Sner and a John Michl Sner. The "Qual" means that they took the qualifying oath of allegiance, which was only required of adult males, so we do not know if their wives or children traveled with them. Since Jacob's wife was in Pennsylvania from 1727, I assume he came as a single man.2
Fact 1 between 1761 and 1767  Between 1761 and 1767, at Northampton County, PA,, Jacob Schnerr and Michael Schnerr were listed for personal property taxes in White Hall Township. In 1767 Jacob was listed as a farmer with 100 acres of land, 2 horses and 8 cattle. Michael had no land, no occupation, 1 horse, 4 cattle and 8 sheep. Beginning in 1768 Jacob was no longer found..3
Fact 1 22 June 1772  On 22 June 1772, at Woodstock, Dunmore County (later renamed Shenandoah), VA,, "Margareth Schnerin," age 15, was listed among the children confirmed by the Rev. J. A. Krug. (Adding an "in" or "en" to the surname was a German convention when referring to young girls.) This would make her date of birth 1756 or 1757. Since there were no other Schnerr/Snarr families in the county, she had to be a daughter of Jacob. We know Jacob couldn't have met Anna Barbara until after his arrival in Pennsylvania in October 1754, so they most likely had time to have only one child between their marriage and the birth of Anna Barbara in Febuary 1759, and this would be that child.4
Fact 1 23 June 1772  On 23 June 1772, at Shenandoah County, VA,, An inventory and appraisement of the Estate of Jacob Snarr, dec'd, was recorded in the county court..5

In return Jacob was to let Stephen have a room in the house during his natural life and to pay 150 pounds, to be divided among his sisters (oldest to youngest, Mary, Barbara, Margaret, Elizabeth, Susanna, Molly, Peggy, Sally and Rachel).
