Birth 1694  He was born in 1694 at Ireland.2 
  He was the son of Sir Richard Cox and Mary Bourne.1,2 
Marriage circa 1724  Joshua Cox married Mary Rankin, daughter of John Rankin and Ann Craig, circa 1724 at Ireland.3,5,1 
Death 1747  Joshua Cox died in 1747.3,1 
Note   Part I of Verl Weight's book was the work of Rev. Simeon Coxe, who spent 20 years researching the Cox ancestry. Simeon Cox says he went to Lancaster County, PA and looked at the will of Joshua Cox (1747) in the will book, as copied by the clerk, which said "the last will and testament of Joshua Cockx". But he says the original will was still on file and it was signed clearly John Cox. He brought the matter to the attention of the recorder who said yes he saw that it was John and he would change the index.

Now in the Phillips book, there is additional evidence that this man's name was really Joshua. In 1794 David Cox signed a power of attorney in Grayson County, VA, for his nephew to represent him in matters concerning the land of Joshua Cox, dec'd, whom he refers to as "my father." Rev. Coxe's whole genealogy was based on the fact that family tradition says the Cox brothers were grandsons of Sir Richard Cox, and Sir Richard Cox had a son named John who was the right age. If his name was really Joshua, then he may be somebody else entirely. The birth date of 1694 is based on him being the son of Sir Richard.

Now maybe Sir RIchard had another son that nobody knew about. Or maybe Joshua's name was John Joshua. Or maybe the family tradition was just wrong..........

It seems odd that these people several hundred years ago could have mis-remembered their grandfather's name, so I choose to favor the family tradition and include Sir Richard in my genealogy.1,5
