Samuel Worley
b. circa 1790

Father Daniel Worley b. between 1753 and 1760
Mother Rachel Copeland
Pedigree

Last Edited 23 Nov 2003

Birth circa 1790  Samuel Worley was born circa 1790 at Charlotte County, VA.
He was the son of Daniel Worley and Rachel Copeland
Marriage 19 April 1809  Samuel Worley married Mary Worley, daughter of Moses Worley and Rhoda Worley, on 19 April 1809.1,2
Note   There were 3 Worley families in Franklin in the 1830 census, Daniel who had a household with just himself and wife, and two Samuel Worleys who had the following households. 3110001-0010001 and 001311-0001001. Note that of the 2 Samuels, the first was age 40-50 in 1830 and had younger sons. The second was 30-40and had older sons. His family exactly matches that of the Samuel who was present in Franklin County in the 1820 census with the following family 310010-10010.

There were 9 young Worley men who were married and/or lived in Franklin or Floyd County between 1833 and 1850: Edmund, George, Moses, John, Isaiah, Charles, James, Harry, and Samuel Jr. Of these, Charles and John witnessed James' marriage bond and Isaiah witnessed Charles' bond, so these 4 are most likely brothers. Charles, Isaiah and James are all too young to belong to the younger Samuel with the older sons, so these four belong to the older Samuel. He had seven different sons living with him between the 1830 and 1840 census, so any of the other younger men, like Samuel Jr and Harry, are probably his also. The issue is further complicated by the marriage in 1827 of a Samuel Worley to Nancy Mills. This is a second marriage for Nancy. She gave permission in 1833 for her daughter Charlotte Mills to marry John Aldridge. So one of the Samuel families in 1830 probably includes some of Nancy's children and Samuel's both. She was a widow in the 1820 census with the following family 500000-10111. (The females list could be 10110; the last 1 is faint and may have been erased.) Since the family of the younger Samuel matches the Samuel who was enumerated in 1820, I assume it was the other, older Samuel who married Nancy and added some of her children to his household.

This leaves the older young men, i.e. George, Moses and Edmund, to be sons of the younger Samuel. He had 5 sons show up between the two censuses, so Harry, for whom we have no birth date, may be his also.

A Samuel Worley married Mary Worley, daughter of Moses, in 1809 in Franklin County. Because the younger Samuel, son of Daniel, was in Franklin about that time, I assume this is he. The main problem with this theory is that the older Samuel isn't found ANYWHERE in the census in 1810 or 1820, and he surely was old enough to have had a household somewhere. I also have not found him in a tax list anywhere before that date. So he had a habit of escaping the tax collector somehow. This could mean that both Samuels were around the whole time and the older Samuel could have married Mary. We have no idea of the name of the wife of whichever Samuel didn't marry Mary Worley.

Another problem is that George was born before 1809, the marriage date of Samuel and Mary. This is from he census ages in four different years. Yet on his death certificate his parents are listed as Samuel and Mary Worley. I would guess this means that either they adopted him or one of them had him from a previous marriage or relationship before their marriage.

Fact 1 between 1811 and 1817  Between 1811 and 1817, at Franklin County, VA,, Samuel Worley was listed for personal property taxes in 1811, 1813 and 1815-1817. His first year, 1811, was also the first year for Daniel Worley, so I am assuming that the Samuel who was listed in this time period was Samuel the son of Daniel..3
(Witness) Marriage 28 October 1817  Samuel Worley witnessed the marriage of Reuben Bowles and Elizabeth Betsy Worley on 28 October 1817 at Montgomery County, VA.4
Fact 1 between 1819 and 1821  Between 1819 and 1821, One Samuel Worley was in Franklin County and the other was in Montgomery County, in 1819 and 1820. The one in Montgomery was also there in 1821. Since Daniel's daughter was married in Montgomery County in 1817, it's slightly more likely that the Samuel in Montgomery was Daniel's son. I have not found either of them on the tax lists of 1822-1829. But if the census ages are correct, Charles Worley was born in 1823 or 1824 in Franklin County, so one Samuel was probably there then and just escaped the tax assessor..3,5
Census 1820  Samuel Worley appeared on the census of 1820 at Franklin County, VA, as follows: 310010-10010.6
Fact 1 August 1820  In August 1820, at Franklin County, VA,, The county court "ordered that Samuel Whirley be sumoned to appear here on the first Monday in November next to answer the presentment of the grand jury against him for swearing three profane oaths at the house of Samuel Akers in this county, within the two months next preceding the 7th day of August 1820." At the November court, cases were listed against Samuel Whirley, Luke Kesler, Arthur Maxey, Thos Trail and Wm Slone. It appeared they were related cases. Abraham Gossett, who appeared to be the witness against all five, failed to appear, so the cases were continued. In Feb 1821 The last will and testament of Abraham Gossett was filed with the court. In June 1821 the cases against the other 4 defendants were dismissed. Samuel Whirley was not mentioned, which was apparently an oversight in the minutes, because his case was not mentioned in the minutes again..7
Census 1830  Samuel Worley appeared on the census of 1830 at Franklin County, VA, as follows: 001311-0001001 (man 30-40 woman 40-50).8

Fact 1 1830  In 1830, at Franklin County, VA,, One Samuel Worley was listed for property taxes, although both were in the census..3
Fact 1 1833  In 1833, at Floyd County, VA,, One Samuel was listed for property taxes..9
Census 1840  Samuel Worley appeared on the census of 1840 at Roanoke County, VA, as follows: 0000001-00000001 (both age 40-50).10

Fact 1 between 1841 and 1845  Between 1841 and 1845, at Roanoke County, VA,, Samuel Worley was listed for property taxes..11
Fact 1 between 1846 and 1847  Between 1846 and 1847, at Floyd County, VA,, Both Samuels were listed for property taxes. At the same time, Samuel Jr was listed in Franklin County, so these were the parent Samuels. One was marked as "Samuel son of P.".9
Fact 1 1848  In 1848, One Samuel was listed for property taxes in Floyd County and the other was listed in Franklin County (along with Samuel Jr)..3,9
Census 1850  Samuel Worley and Samuel Worley appeared on the census of 1850 as follows: I have searched all the households headed by a Worley or indexed as having a Worley for the whole state of Virginia, and I was unable to find either of the two Samuel Worleys in 1850.
Fact 1 1850  In 1850, at Franklin County, VA,, One Samuel Worley was listed for property taxes..3
Fact 1 between 1853 and 1855  Between 1853 and 1855, at Montgomery County, VA,, There was a Samuel Whirley on the personal property tax list. I don't know if this is Samuel Jr, one of the senior Samuels, or if one the Montgomery Worleys (who are descendants of the Pennsylvania Worleys and apparently not related to John of Cumberland) had a son named Samuel. The film I checked only went up to 1855..5
(Witness) Census 1860  Samuel Worley appeared on the census of 1860 in the household of George Bowles at Franklin County, VA.12

Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds had three children, George R. Reynolds, Mrs. Florence Herrington and Samuel E Reynolds, all of New Kensington. Mr. Reynolds has also fifteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Before his retirement several years ago Mr. Reynolds was employed at the Aluminum company plant.
[There are a number of things wrong with this article. First he was not born in Alexandria. Every census, his pension application and his death certificate all say he was born in Green County, PA. Second, his Civil War pension application says he didn't enlist until 1865, which was too late to have been in most of the battles listed. It does say he was in Company A 102nd. My mother has checked on that company and it DID fight in those battles. So either the person writing the article just looked up battles the company fought in, or there was something fishy about his pension application that he didn't claim service he really had OR he'd been lying to people about his service and saying he'd been in all those battles when he hadn't really. My favorite theory is that he had more than one enlistment in the war but the record of the earlier one was lost, and he had to conform his application to the record that survived. I do know that both his father and his brother Randolph had more than one enlistment, so it must have been common.].14

Pedigree

Last Edited 23 Feb 2005

Birth 1813  James David Reynolds was born in 1813 at Alexandria, VA.2
He was the son of David Reynolds and Sarah Louisa Fowler.1
Marriage February 1836  James David Reynolds married Mary Elizabeth Kidwell, daughter of James Kidwell and Elizabeth ?, in February 1836 at Dunbarton Street M.E. Church, Georgetown, D.C..3,4
Death 29 March 1887  James David Reynolds died on 29 March 1887 at McKeesport, PA.2
Note   J.D. Reynolds' obituary stated that he had twelve children, or which eight were alive in 1887. The eight listed were sons R.R., T.M., Wm.E., and J.D., and daughters Mrs. Carrie , widow of the late W.B. Momeyer, Mrs. Jane Tife, Mrs. J.P. Taylor and Mrs Harry Lehman. This means Harry and Edward died young, probably between the 1870 and 1880 census. I know that Mrs. Lehman was named Belle (presumably Isabella), so that leaves Lizzie, Anne Mariah and Anlista who appeared as children of this couple on some census. One of the three was alive in 1887 and married to a J.P. Taylor. The most likely candidate for this is Lizzie, because she was alive at the age of 18 in the 1880 census.2
Note   I know that J.D. is the son of David and Louisa Reynolds of Alexandria, because they had a son named James David and a daughter named Elvina. Our James David was born in Alexandria and also had a sister named Elvina (according to his pension application.) In addition, I know from the 1847 deed that James David the son of David and Louisa moved to Wheeling, WV, which isn't too far from McKeesport, and his age in the 1820 census shows that he was born between 1810 and 1820, which fits with McKeesport J.D.
Census 1840  James David Reynolds appeared on the census of 1840 at Muskingum County, OH, as follows: 00001-10001. I am confident this is our James D. because I know his sister Ann Eliza Reynolds Willis and her husband Archibald lived in Muskingum County when they signed for the sale of their father's house in 1847. They were found there also in the 1840 census, so it makes sense that J.D. and Mary E. came to Ohio with his sister. Also the ages of this family match.5
Fact 1 1847  In 1847, at Wheeling, WV,, James D. and Mary E. were residents of Wheeling when they signed for the sale of his father's house in 1847..6
(Witness) Fact 1 26 July 1847  On 26 July 1847, at Alexandria, VA,, Archibald and Ann Eliza Willis of Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio, James D. and Mary E. Reynolds of Wheeling, Virginia and Richard H. and Elvina M. Hall of Alexandria sold to Henry Hobb of Alexandria for $200 all their right to a tenement and lot in Alexandria on the east side of Fairfax Street between Duke and Wolfe Streets, of which David Reynolds, father of Ann Eliza Willis, James D. Reynolds and Elvina M. Hall died seized intestate, when then descended to them and their brothers Ferdinand and John, the latter of whom having deceased intestate and his interest descended to them and Ferdinand and their mother, now the wife of said Henry Hobb. The six sellers each appeared separately before county officials in their county of residence and acknowledged the deed. Alexandria was part of the District of Columbia from 1789 until it was given back to Virginia in 1847. On a part of this deed Alexandria is referred to as "Alexandria County, Virginia.".6
Census 1850  James David Reynolds appeared on the census of 1850 at Jefferson Township, Greene County, PA, as follows: James D. Reynolds 36 Tailor b DC
Mary C 33 b DC
Anlista 10 b Ohio
Jane Ann 8 p Ohio
Anne Mariah 5 b VA
Randolph R 3 b DC
Thomas H 6/12 b PA.7
Fact 1 1859  According to his obituary, J.D. and family moved to McKeesport in 1859. However, he was not enumerated there in the 1860 census. He was also not in Greene Co or elsewhere in Allegheny, so I think the census taker missed him. He enlisted for the first time in Wheeling, WV, which was where he lived before moving to Greene County, so I checked the census there too, but he was not found..2
Census 1860  James David Reynolds appeared on the census of 1860 at Carroll Township, Monongahela, Washington County, PA, as follows: Household #43

Birth 31 August 1842  Albert Frank Turner was born on 31 August 1842 at Gloucester County, NJ.5,6
He was the son of Benjamin F. Turner and Sarah A. Pedrick.2,3,4
Marriage 23 May 1867  Albert Frank Turner married Hannah Maria Bevis, daughter of Joseph Curtis Bevis Jr. and Bridget Dickerson, on 23 May 1867 at Muskingum County, OH.3,7
Death 1 April 1895  Albert Frank Turner died on 1 April 1895 at Pittsburgh, PA, at age 52.3,2
Burial April 1895  He was buried in April 1895 at Allegheny Cemetery, Pittsburgh, PA.2
Milit-Beg 25 April 1861  He began military service on 25 April 1861 at Glassboro, New Jersey, His rank was that of private. He served in Company A of the 3rd Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers. During the time of his service, he was often listed as being sick or in the hospital. One of the diagnoses was syphilis. At one point he was given pay for serving as a nurse.3
Description 29 December 1863  He was described as On the form for his second volunteer term, Turner's description was given as having gray eyes, auburn hair, sandy complexion, and height five feet seven inches. However, on June 28, 1890, when he applied for a pension, his description was recorded as having blue eyes, light hair, light complexion and height 5 feet 9 inches. Lillian Aird Reynolds, his granddaughter, was told that she inherited her red hair from him. On 29 December 1863.3
Fact 1 between 1865 and 1867  Between 1865 and 1867, After his discharge from the service, A.F. moved to Zanesville, Ohio, where he resumed his trade as a glassblower and met and married Hannah May Bevis. After the birth of their first two daughters, work became scarce in Zanesville, so Albert left his wife and daughters with his mother and went to Pittsburgh to seek work, whch he was able to do on the recommendation of Jacob Focer. Albert rented a home next door to Jacob Focer and brought his family to Pittsburgh, where Cora and Maude were born. [I don't know where Perce Focer got the idea that Frank's parents moved to Ohio, or where he got the part about him leaving the girls with his mother. That must have been handed down family information. I suspect he left them with his mother-in-law, because I have strong evidence from Benjamin Turner's pension papers that Benjamin and Sarah were never were in Ohio.].2
Milit-End 10 July 1865  He ended military service on 10 July 1865 at Trenton, NJ.3
Census 1870  Albert Frank Turner appeared on the census of 1870 at Ward 12, Pittsburgh, Allegheny, PA, as follows: Household 909/1159
Turner, Alfred F 28 Glass blower b NJ
Hanna 24 keeping house b OH
Sadie 2 b OH
Jessie 4/12 b PA
Household 906 is Jacob Focer, also a glassblower and also born in New Jersey. His household includres 10 year old Homer, who later married Sadie Turner. His children, with ages up to 17, were all born in PA, so he'd been there for at least 17 years. My guess is that he was the reason Frank Turner went to Pittsburgh to find work.8
Census 1880  Albert Frank Turner appeared on the census of 1880 at Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA, as follows: Pittsburgh, 36th Ward

He was the son of Michael Turner and Sarah Timberman.1

Burial   He was buried at Cedar Green Cemetery, Clayton, Gloucester County, NJ.5
Note   Proof that the Michael Turner with these dates was the father of this Benjamin Turner: We know from his 1883 marriage license that Benjamin's parents were Michael Turner and Sarah Timberman. There were 3 Michael Turners living in Gloucester County in the early 1800's. One left a will in 1806 naming wife Ann, daughters Elizabeth Heritage, Margaret Horner, Susannah, Nancy, and Ester Furniss. He can't be Benjamin's father because he died before Benjamin was born. One died intestate about 1821 leaving a wife named Sarah. The third also had a wife named Sarah and is buried beside her in Cedar Green Cemetery with a death date of 1875. They are buried in the next row from this Benjamin Turner. In the 1850 census, the only one of the Michael Turners to be still alive by that time was living with wife Sarah and had in their household a Hannah Timmerman, age 86.

Fact 1 10 September 1879  On 10 September 1879, at Tansboro, Camden County, NJ,, Benjamin Turner applied for an invalid pension. The "basis of claim" was "disability from chronic diarrhea resulting from a hearty cold, incurred at Liverpool Point, Md. about December 1, 1862, which settled upon his bowels." The papers related to the original application were dated between 1879 and 1881, and contained affidavits from two former army surgeons, the former 1st lieutenant of Company D of the 12th NJ regiment, his doctor from before the war who said his health then was fine, three physicians who treated him during the years since the war for chronic diarrhea, Thomas Whitney owner of the glassworks in Glassboro, who said he employed Turner before the war and remembered him to have been in good health, and his sons Howard and Irving Turner, who stated that their father had been unable to work since the war due to chronic diarrhea. The claim was accepted and he was granted a pension of $6 per month, apparently retroactive to January 8, 1863 (his date of discharge)..10

Hi Karen,

I just found your information regarding Rebecca Lundbeck being married to Joseph Curtis Bevis. I am also looking for Rebecca Lundbeck being married to Joseph Bevis. I have never found proof of their marriage. Below is the information I have on Joseph and Rebecca.

Could you please let me know where you got your information on Joseph and Rebecca.

Thank you in advance.

My maternal 4th. great grandfather is Joseph BEVIS born 17 Oct 1776 in Burlington Co., NJ & died 1854 in Owen Co., IN the son of George BEVIS and Mary SOOY. He married Rebecca (LUNDBECK or LIMBRICK???).

Joseph and Rebecca had the following children:

1. Marriah b. ca. 1806 in NJ and m. Frederick ATKINSON 1827 in Muskingum Co., OH

2. William b. ca. 1808 in NJ, m. Elizabeth ATKINSON

3. Sarah b. 28 July 1811 in Salem Co., NJ, m. John MCINDOO 1832 in Bartholomew Co., IN

4. Joseph Curtis b. 1814, m. Bridget DICKERSON 1837 in OH

5. Daniel b. 1816 in NJ, m. Elizabeth Anne DOUGHTY 1842 in Muskingum Co., OH

6. Elizabeth married a DAVIS

7. Rebecca married a KERL

John.

In a history about the McINDOO family, Sarah said she traveled a great deal with her father after her mother died. I am looking for any trace of a Rebecca BEVIS who might have been buried in Ohio from 1818 to 1830.

There were LUNBECKS in Gloucester and Salem Co., NJ; Ross and Pike Co., OH; Johnson and Bartholomew Co., IN.

WRITTEN BY

NORMAN EUGENE McINDOO IN 1949

Joseph Bevis was a pioneer of New Jersey. He and his daughter, Sarah, traveled from Virginia to Illinois, then to Ohio, and finally to Indiana, always traveling in a covered wagon. Sarah's mother was dead at that time and she was her father's housekeeper. They had traveled so much and to so many places that one day she became angry at him and mockingly told him that she was going to marry the first man that came along. That man was John McIndoo, her loving husband for over 50 years.

Joseph's close relatives left Indiana early and went to Oregon over the Oregon trail, and I have been told that the name Bevis is rather common today in that state. I have failed to learn the names of Joseph Bevis' father and mother (according to Norman in 1949) but according to the early records there were many by the name Bevis in the east, particular New Jersey.

The 1850 census for Owen County, Indiana, shows that Joseph Bevis, age 73, lived with his son-in-law, John McIndoo. On June 4, 1837, Joseph married Frances Tooley but they did not stay together. Sometime before 1850, Joseph left Bartholomew County, Indiana, and went to Owen County, Indiana, to live with his daughter Sarah. He opened up a shoe shop and on one of his trips to Spencer to get supplies he became ill. On the trip home he became too ill to travel so he stopped at the Mason home, and there died of pneumonia on 26 Sept. 1851, and was buried in the New Hope or McIndoo Cemetery on the McIndoo farm. (New Union Cemetery). He was born 17 Oct. 1776, presumably in New Jersey.

WILL OF JOSEPH BEVIS

OWEN COUNTY, INDIANA

WRITTEN 25 SEPT 1854*

FILED 5 OCT 1854 PAGES 23 & 24

*Please note that Norman stated that Joseph came home from Spencer, Indiana and became too ill to go on. He stopped at the Mason home and died there. He gave a date of 26 Sept 1851. Since his will was written 25 Sept 1854, I do believe the other date is wrong.

I Joseph Bevis do hereby make my lasts will and testament as follows:

Term First:

I will and bequeath unto William Bevis my eldest son $10.00

Term Second:

I will and bequeath unto Daniel Bevis my third son $10.00

Term Third:

I will and bequeath unto Joseph W. Bevis my second son $10.00

Term Fourth:

I will and bequeath unto my Granddaughter which is the daughter of Walkin Davis $10.00

Term Fifth:

will and bequeath unto Sarah Macadoo $10.00

Term Sixth:

I will and bequeath unto Joseph Mason my nephew ten dollars and all my wearing apparel.

Term Seventh:

I hereby authorize Joseph Mason my nephew to administer on my estate and pay all my just debts and funeral expenses and the property is all to be sold.

Term Eighth:

After the forgoing terms are all settled. I do will and bequeath unto Marriah Atkinson, Rebecca Kerl and John Bevis.

Signed Joseph Bevis his mark.

Signed sealed and delivered in the presents of William P. Weadly and Joseph Mason.

CARTER'S CHAPEL METHODIST CHURCH

This information was given by the Historical Society in Bartholomew county, Indiana. Rebecca Bevis might be the daughter of Joseph Bevis.

Carter's Chapel was the first Methodist Church in Bartholomew County. It was located in Columbus Township on the Crossroads at I well Station, north of Columbus, Indiana. It was organized in 1821 by Rev. James Garner.

In the beginning the meetings were held at the houses of Nathan Carter, Samuel Mounts and others. The first church building was log, apparently located west of the graveyard. On the same approximate site in the 40's a small frame church was built, which served the congregation until 1870, when a brick edifice 40 X 45 was erected at a cost of about $2,200.00, which was dedicated in 1871 by Revs. Sampson Tincher and Joseph Cotton.

Early members of Carter's Chapel were: Elijah S. Carter, Mariah Carter, Nathan Carter, Elizabeth Carter, Joseph Bevis, Aaron Bevis, Sarah Mounts, William Lumbick, Sarah Lumbick, Benjamin F. Arnold, Matilda Arnold, Benjamin Piatt, Mary Fiddrich, Edia Arnold, Samuel Brown, Elizabeth Brown, Rebecca Ann Carter, Rebecca Bevia, Jamima Lumbick, Rhoda Hiatt.

Henry Lunbeck
b. 20 November 1728, d. 24 June 1798

Last Edited 19 Sep 2002

Birth 20 November 1728  Henry Lunbeck was born on 20 November 1728 at Swedesboro, Gloucester County, NJ.1
Marriage 11 November 1754  He married Mary Hyde on 11 November 1754 at Gloucester County, NJ.2,1
Death 24 June 1798  Henry Lunbeck died on 24 June 1798 at Great Egg Harbor, Gloucester County, NJ, at age 69.1
Fact 1   Henry was a ship-joiner, said to be from Switzerland, but with a Swedish name and lived in a Swedish settlement. He came to America about 1748. (Arthur Lunbeck, the author, who wrote in 1937, had the old family Bible. ) The second generation changed the spelling to "Lundbeck." Lindsley doesn't explain the contradiction between a birthplace in New Jersey and the statement that Henry came to America in 1748. Evidently both pieces of information came from Arthur Lundbeck's manuscript, and he is faithfully reporting them..1
