  1. In this article, Willard Gentry quotes a Denny Ellerman who wrote regarding the various possible surnames for Jane, wife of Nicholas II. Ellerman stated that his most likely candidate for her surname was Brown, because when Nicholas and Jane moved to Albemarle Co, VA, they did not move near to where their sons had already moved, but rather to another part of the county where they lived near several Brown families with whom they had many close dealings. Also Jane signed some deed with a backwards "B," indicating that her maiden name might begin with that letter.

Jacob appears to have been the only son to have remained in Ashe/Grayson area. He's the only Stitt in the 1850 Ashe census and the above note says there were no Stitts then in Grayson.

In the 1850 census he lives next door to Benjamin and Polly Deboard (Polly's his sister).
