J. Alexander Johnson
b. 1852

Mother Sarah Sophina Johnson b. circa 1832, d. between 1885 and 1894
Pedigree

Last Edited 8 Jun 2003

Birth 1852  J. Alexander Johnson was born in 1852.1
He was the son of Sarah Sophina Johnson
Marriage 7 December 1883  J. Alexander Johnson married Martha Reed on 7 December 1883 at Ashe County, NC.2
Note   It is unknown who the father of Alexander is. Sarah Elizabeth's father is from her death certificate.
Fact 1 2 February 1884  On 2 February 1884, at Ashe County, NC,, Alexander Johnson appeared before the justice of the peace and swore that James Johnson, deceased, owed him $1,100.00, for for eleven years "work and labor" at $100 per year. He signed his name "J.A. Johnson," and the claim was recorded in the deed book..3
Fact 1 17 August 1894  On 17 August 1894, at Ashe County, NC,, H.R. McMillan and S.E. McMillan sold to J.A. Johnson for $200, 24 acres on the South Fork of the New River, adjoining A.D. Reed, A Barker and others "it being his part of the S.S. Johnson tract," Witnesses were A.N. McMillan and A.D. Reed. The land was described as "beginning on a white oak running north 50 degrees east 97 poles to a double chesnut, thence north 47 west 19 poles to a stake a division corner of H.R. McMillan and J.A. Johnson, thence north 87 west a division line 82 poles to a stake in the line of another tract thence south 13.5 degrees east 81 poles to the beginning, including 24 acres." Now J.A. Johnson was Sarah Elizabeth's brother Alexander, and S.S. Johnson I believe was Sarah Elizabeth's mother Sophina Johnson. Two days later, the McMillans bought 24 acres FROM J.A. Johnson for the same price, so it looks like the siblings traded shares of their mother's land, or else these deeds are the method by which they split up their mother's land..4
Fact 1 19 August 1894  On 19 August 1894, at Ashe County, NC,, H.R. McMillan and S.E. McMillan bought from J.A. Johnson for $200, 24 acres on the South Fork of the New RIver, adjoining D.L. Johnson and A.D. Reed, "it being there part of the S.S. Johnson tract," Witnesses were A.N. McMillan and A.D. Reed. Now J.A. Johnson was Sarah Elizabeth's brother Alexander, and S.S. Johnson I believe was Sarah Elizabeth's mother Sophina Johnson. Two days earlier, the McMillans sold 24 acres TO J.A. Johnson for the same price, so it looks like the siblings traded shares of their mother's land, or else these deeds are the method by which they split up their mother's land..5

Fact 1 1849  In 1849, According to Peggy Stringer Lester, she found the following entries in a microfilm of Ashe County court records.
1849 Jefferson Stringer vs wife Polly for divorce. Sent to a jury.
1852 Jefferson Stringer vs Polly Stringer "ordered that the petition be dismissed at the cost of the petitioner." I'm not sure whether this means he got the divorce or not.

Note   From Rockingham Co Heritage:

For 230 years, the descendants of Thomas Hopper have owned or occupied land surrounding Matrimony Creek. The Hopper home house is located on a portion of that property which lies within the present-day western limits of Eden, on Center Church Road at the old Leaksville Milling Company. The ancestors of the Hoppers came from Culpepper County, VA, where Thomas Hopper, Sr and wife Ann resided in 1745. By 1777, they had moved to Caswell County NC according to his will, in which he mentions his children, including a son William who received a bequest of some clothes. Edmund Swinney

Last Edited 28 Feb 2004

Fact 1 1782  In 1782, at Henry County, VA,, The transcriber for the 1782 Henry Co personal property tax list shows no Swinneys or Sweeneys but does list an Edmund "Swing," which I believe is an interpretation of difficult handwriting of the word "Swiny.".1
Fact 1 24 February 1784  On 24 February 1784, at Henry County, VA,, Edmund Sweeney patented 346 acres on both sides of Nicholas's Creek, adjoining O'Brian and Ross. (Nicholas Creek fell into Franklin County when it was split off from Henry in 1786.).2
Fact 1 between 1786 and 1789  Between 1786 and 1789, at Franklin County, VA,, Edmund Sweeney was listed for personal property tax (except 1788). He was not found after that date..3
Fact 1 6 December 1787  On 6 December 1787, at Prince Edward County, VA,, Edmund Swinney entered for 200 acres adjoining Marvelstone, Nick and the Appomattox River plus 300 acres adjoining Gibson and the South Fork of the Appomattox River. An entry was the first step in getting a patent. I can't find in the Library Of Virginia's database that a patent was ever issued. But it was very common to transfer a warrant to someone else before the patent was issued. William Swinney received a patent in 1790 for 300 acres on the south Fork of the Appomattox River adjoining Gibson and Cary. This could be the same land; I have not researched further..2,4
Fact 1 between 1792 and 1796  Between 1792 and 1796, at Prince Edward County, VA,, Edmund Swinney was listed for personal property tax in Prince Edward County. In 1795-6 he was listed as "exempt" with 1 slave and 1 horse, in 1796 on the same day as Willaim Swinney. If he is exempt from tax, then the fact that he is not listed after 1796 doesn't mean he died or moved away, it just means he was exempt from the tithe, and once he no longer had the slave he probably wouldn't even be listed..5
Fact 1 22 November 1800  On 22 November 1800, at Franklin County, VA,, Edmund Swinney of Prince Edward County sold to Nathaniel Dickson 346 acres on both sides of Nicholas Creek adjoining O'Brient and Ross. The deed was witnessed by Swinfield Ruble, John Knowles, Moses Jenny and Saml Saunders. It was proven in Franklin County court in January 1801 by the oath of Ruble and then in December 1803 by the oaths of Knowles and Jenny..
